SELINSGROVE, Pa. – 20-year-old Matt Cochran of Williamsport came away with the victory in Saturday night’s 30-lap Late Model Fall Classic at Selinsgrove Speedway following a thrilling five-car battle for the lead in the final laps of the last race of the season.

Cochran’s second win of the year and the fourth of his career at the track was worth $5,000 driving the Krenn Brokerage No. 16.

Bob Bussey of Northumberland scored his sixth win of the year in the 12-lap roadrunner/street stock challenge race.

Polesitter Scott Haus powered into the lead at the start of the late model feature. Haus was closely chased by third-place starter Jason Covert and fourth-place starter Dan Stone. The event’s first caution flag unfurled on lap four when Pancho Lawler stopped his No. 93 in turn four. During the caution flag period, Haus withdrew from the race with a smoking race car as well as sixth-place starter Jeff Rine, who rejoined the race at the back of the pack.

Covert inherited the lead for the lap five restart and quickly stretched his lead while Stone raced with second-place starter Chad Hollenbeck, fifth-place starter Dylan Yoder, and seventh-place starter Matt Cochran for the top five positions.

On the 13th circuit, Hollenbeck slowed with a flat tire. Prior to a lap 17 restart, Stone was penalized a position for jumping on the lap 14 restart, placing Cochran into second behind race leader Covert. The second half of the race was an all-out war on wheels for the top five positions between Covert, Cochran, Stone, D. Yoder, and Rine, who was able to make a rebound from the rear of the field.

Cochran made the winning pass using the inside lane through turns one and two on the 27th lap. Rine showed a final burst of speed by powering into the runner-up position on the final lap. Cochran’s margin of victory was just two seconds over Rine, Covert, Stone, and D. Yoder.

In the roadrunner/street stock challenge race, polesitter Kevin Holland led the first four laps over fourth-place starter Bob Bussey. The first caution flag unfurled on lap four when second-place starter Ray Rothfuss slowed on the track.

On the lap five restart, Bussey made the winning pass using the outside lane in turn two. Once in front of the pack, Bussey began to stretch his lead. Despite several late-race restarts, Bussey was able to hold a strong lead and posted the victory over Holland, Jeremy Kline, Brandon Shultz, and Toby Chase.
