GASTONIA, NC . . . . . . Johnny Bridges of Cherryville, NC won the twenty-five lap USCS/URC Sprint Challenge event for 360 sprint cars Friday night at the Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC. Bridges made an exciting pass for the lead on lap eighteen, passing race leader Lance Moss. For the final seven laps, Bridges ran unchallenged to the victory.
A twenty car field of 360 sprint cars turned out for the event that saw heat race wins go the defending race winner Eric Riggins and URC driver Troy Betts.
At the start of the twenty-five lap feature, Lance Moss set the early pace. On lap three, the red flag was displayed for the “Carolina Kid” Eric Riggins, JR after he took a spectacular flip entering turn one and exiting the race track by clearing the first turn wall. Riggins walked away uninjured.
On the restart Lance Moss continued to set the pace as heat race winner Troy Betts now appeared to a threat for the win along with Terry Gray who trying to chase down the race leader. Gray moved into second and set his sights on Moss. The red flag was displayed again, this time on lap seven when Troy Betts hit a rough spot in the track and flipped in turn three. Betts walked away uninjured.
Moss continued to set the pace but now Terry Gray (looking for his first win of the season) was running in second with Johnny Bridges passing Robbie Stillwaggon for third. On lap nine, Bridges moved into second and set his sights on the leader. At the halfway point of the race, Moss remained the leader followed by Bridges, Gray, Stillwaggon and Morgan Turpen.
As the field passed on lap seventeen, Nicholas Snyder made hard contact with the homestretch wall and flipped on the homestretch. Snyder was not injured by the car was badly damaged.
When green flag racing resumed Johnny Bridges made the move of the race, passing Lance Moss to become the new race leader. Bridges maintained the lead through the closing laps that also included a caution on lap twenty-two. With the numerous caution flags, Series officials were concerned about the total number of laps and the cars possibly being at risk of running out of fuel.
For the final three laps Bridges set the pace and was never challenged, scoring his first USCS win since 2012. Lance Moss finished second as Terry Gray scored third after holding off Robbie Stillwaggon through most of the race. Female racer Morgan Turpen delivered a strong fifth place feature finish.
