6.18.15 USMTS Modifieds Results

PARK CITY, Kan.—One year ago when the United States Modified Touring Series invaded the 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kan., Rodney Sanders led the entire main event until a late-race caution nearly thwarted his victory celebration when Zack VanderBeek pulled ahead o the white flag lap only to have Sanders nip him at the line and preserve the win.

In Thursday’s return of the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental, there were no late cautions and no surprises, and Sanders walked away with his fourth straight USMTS victory after winning the final three shows last weekend.

After quickly climbing to the front after starting seventh, Johnny Scott pulled to within three car-lengths of Sanders early in the 40-lap race but was never able to mount a serious challenge for the lead.

With a swarm of lapped cars ahead of the leaders as they completed the 25th lap, it looked like Scott might get his opportunity to pounce. Instead, Sanders sliced his way through the back-markers like a hot knife through butter and left his chasers far behind to battle it out for bridesmaid honors.

“I saw (Franz) on the bottom there early, but I was kind of too free getting into the corner and too tight on the throttle to stay down there so I was just trying to keep my momentum up,” Sanders said in victory lane. “Once we got to lapped traffic, that bottom started working in and I could run down there a little bit and I was pretty good in lapped traffic so I was just hoping we wouldn’t get a late yellow because you know how those can change things.”

Two brief cautions slowed the pace early on, but there were no cautions late to hinder Sanders’s charge or help his pursuers and he sailed to his 53rd career USMTS triumph and fourth $3,000 in six days.

With the win, the 25-year-old two-time defending USMTS National Champion from Happy, Texas, also solidified his spot atop the MSD Central Region points standings just four days after clinching the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Northern Region title with one race still remaining.

Scott, who leads the Double H Bands Southern Region points going into Friday night’s tilt at the Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas, held off Ryan Gustin for the runner-u paycheck while Grant Junghans finished fourth and multi-time NCRA champ Brian Franz completed the top five.

Joe ‘Big Daddy’ Duvall won his Real Racing Wheels “B” Main and passed seven competitors to claim the sixth spot. Not to be outdone, VanderBeek roared to a seventh-place finish after taking the green flag from the 21st position. Jon Thompson, Dereck Ramirez and Lance Town rounded out the top 10.

The annual USMTS Southern Speedweek commences on Friday, June 19, at the Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas, for the first of seven events in nine days in the highly-competitive Double H Bands Southern Region.

This will be the first-ever event at the Red River Speedway for the 17-year-old United States Modified Touring Series. In addition to the $3,000-to-win USMTS event, a full race program featuring Sprint Cars, Limited Mods, Pro Stocks and Mini Stocks will also compete.

Pit gates will open up by 3 p.m. and the grandstand entrance opens at 5:30. Hot laps begin at 7:15 with racing to follow.

General admission is $17 for ages 12-64, kids ages 6-11 are just $5 and children 5 and under get in for free. Active military and seniors 65 and older get in for $12 with proper ID. Pit passes are $35.

The Red River Speedway is a state-of-the-art semi-banked 1/4-mile dirt oval located 3.5 miles west of Wichita Falls on Hwy 287. Take the FM 369 exit and then go north one mile. The track is on the right side of the road. For more information call 817-229-0287 or check out www.rrspeedway.com online.
With trips to the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas, on June 22; Heart O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, Texas, on June 23; Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on June 24; Mountain Creek Speedway in Grand Prairie, Texas, on June 25; and Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., on June 26; the swing through the south wraps up on Saturday, June 27, at the historic Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.

Nearly $40,000 has been earmarked for the winners from an overall purse of more than $250,000 for events during the month of June.
