8.21.15 Albany Saratoga Speedway Results

Malta, NY – Brett Hearn returned to victory lane Friday night after picking up the win in the 35 lap Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event. The win for Hearn on Garone’s Concrete Pumping Night was his 125th at the track.

In other action Mike Tholin (Sportsman), Robbie Speed (DIRTcar Pro Stock), Mike Coffey, Jr. (Limited Sportsman), Randy Miller (Street Stock), Todd Goldstein (Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders) and Don Harvey (Empire Limited Sprints) were all feature winners.

Alex Bell and Brian Gleason led the field to the green with Bell taking the early lead over Brian Berger, Gleason, Rob Pitcher and Rich Scagliotta. Gleason moved past Berger for second on lap two and began to close on Bell. By lap five Gleason was all over the Bell machine. Meanwhile Don Ronca moved into fifth forcing New Jersey’s Scagliotta out of the top five. As the laps clicked off Bell began to pull away from Gleason. By lap ten Bell had opened nearly a straightway lead over Gleason.

With the top two positions secure all eyes focused on the battle between Berger and Pitcher for the third position. Berger, who was in a substitute driver role for Elmo Reckner who was not in attendance after the death of his mother, came to a stop in turn two on lap 12 forcing the caution. On the restart Bell held the lead with Gleason, Ronca, Peter Britten and Pitcher following.

Pitcher moved past Britten for fourth a lap later as Kenny Tremont, Jr. and Brett Hearn battled hard for sixth and seventh and of course, the track title. Gleason took the lead from Bell on lap 16 with Pitcher moving to second and Britten fourth. Pitcher then took the lead from Gleason. On lap 19 Hearn and Tremont split Ronca and move into fifth and sixth. Britten took over third from Bell on lap 22 with Hearn following for fourth. Hearn then took over third from Britten on lap 23 and second from Gleason a half lap later.

Tremont moved to fifth on lap 26 as Hearn challenges Pitcher for the lead. On lap 27 Hearn took over the lead from Pitcher while at the same time Gleason and Britten battle for third. Britten would take the spot on lap 29 with Tremont moving to fourth at the same time. Matt Delorenzo would move into fifth with about five laps to go forcing Gleason to sixth.

In the end Hearn pulled away for his ninth win of the season over Pitcher, Britten, Tremont and Delorenzo. With his win and Tremont’s fourth place finish, Tremont’s points lead is now 39 points. With 27 Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modifieds on hand, heat races were won by Bell, Mike Perrotte and Gleason.

Mike Tholin won the Featherfoot Warrior Series Sportsman event, his seventh career win in the division at the track. Mike Burdo and John Proctor led the field down to the green with veteran Jack Swinton clipping the turn four implement tire, breaking the front end. On the restart Burdon took over the race lead with Mike Tholin and Proctor in pursuit. Tholin closed on Burdon and took over the top spot on lap two. Don Bellen and Tim Hartman, Jr. came together in turn four on lap two causing the second caution flag of the event. On the restart second place point sitter Rocky Warner came to a stop in turn one.

When racing resumed Tholin held the top spot over Proctor and Burdo. Adam Gage moved past Burdo for third on lap five with David Schilling following past Burdo for fourth. Schilling took over position number three from Gage on lap eight and set his sights on the lead duo. At the half way point Tholin held a near straightaway lead over Proctor, a quickly closing schilling, Gage and Joe Orlando. Schilling’s good run came to an end on lap 16 when he suffered mechanical issues and pulled pit side.

As lap 20 clicked off Tholin held a near half straightaway lead over Proctor. Gage continued to run in third with Orlando and Robert Bublak completing the top five. In the end the top five would never change with Tholin picking up the win over Proctor, Gage, Orlando and Bublak. Heat races for the 27 Sportsman entries were won by Derrick McGrew, Gage and Swinton.

Robbie Speed won the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock event. Dave DePaulo led the opening lap before the caution waved for Peter Porter and Scott Lawrence who tangled on the back stretch. On the restart DePaulo continued to lead with Chuck Dumblewski and Norm Loubier following. Speed moved past Loubier for the third position on lap five and closed quickly on Dumblewski. Speed pulled alongside Dumblewski on lap seven with the duo running side by side until Speed took over on lap nine.

Speed meanwhile quickly closed on DePaulo and had the lead down to about a car length when Brandon Emigh came to a stop on lap 12. Speed took the lead on the restart with DePaulo falling to second and Bill Smith third. In the end no one had anything for Speed who picked up the win over Smith, Byron Wescott, Kenny Martin and DePaulo. A total of 19 DIRTcar Pro Stocks were on hand with heat races being won by Smith and Speed.

Mike Coffey, Jr. won the 20 lap Limited Sportsman feature event, his third of the season. With the win Coffey now will graduate to the Sportsman division. Zach Daurio was the first to lead the 20 limited Sportsman feature event. Daurio led the first four laps without challenge but that changed on the ensuing restart. Nick Fretto began to pressure Daurio from second with Coffey in third. Coffey took over the second position on lap seven as Fretto began to lose ground on the leaders. Coffey pulled alongside of Daurio on lap nine.

A caution for debris slowed the field on lap ten. Daurio held the lead on the restart with Coffey all over him. Coffey made another run under Daurio on lap 14 and at the line, took the lead. Daurio battled back on lap 17. Coffey was able to hold on for the win over Daurio, Fretto, Pat Jones and George Dorvee. Heat races for the 21 Limited Sportsman were won by Zach Daurio, Mike Coffey, Jr. and Brandon Pitcher.

Randy Miller won his ninth Street Stock feature event of the season. John Morris, Jr. was the first to lead the 20 lap event with Fred Harris following. David Shippee took over the second position on lap four and closed quickly on Morris. Shippee moved into the lead on lap five and soon after Morris spun in turn four. On the restart Shippee maintained the lead with Damon Anderson following. Current point’s leader Miller took over the second position on lap eight with Bill Duprey right in his tire tracks. A tangle in turn two brought the caution flag out on lap 11, forcing a restart.

When racing resumed Josh Coonradt entered the now four car battle for the lead. Miller took the lead with Dupree, Coonradt and Shippee following. A spin by Jon Hayes in turn four on lap 13 bunched the field back up. On the restart Miller held the top spot with Dupree and Coonradt battling for second. Coonradt moved into second on lap 14 and started hounding Miller for the lead. The yellow flag wave again on lap 17 for a car slowing on the front stretch. When the green flag waved Miller held the lead with Coonradt all over him. In the end Miller brought home the win over Coonradt, Duprey, Nathan Dahoda and Anderson.

Phil Basset grabbed the early lead with Clint Roars running second and Justin Phillips third. Don Harvey moved past Phillips for third on lap three. The caution flag waved on lap four for Jamie Beaudry who spun then tipped over in turn two. On the restart Basset held the lead however Harvey was all over him. Harvey took the top spot on lap five and pulled away. Roars moved past Phillips for second on lap 14. John LeClair flipped in turn two, setting up a late race restart. Despite the restart Harvey pulled away for the win over Roars, Zach Bennett, Phillips and Torres. A pair of heat races were held for the 16 Empire Lightning Sprints in attendance with heat races being won by Torres and Doug Norrie.

Mike Parodi was the first to lead the 12 lap feature event however lap one would be led by Todd Goldstein. A debris caution slowed the field on lap one. When racing resumed Goldstein held the lead and pulled away. Goldstein picked up the win over Steve Ryan, Ben Grant, Mike Parodi and David Mullineaux.

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action Friday evening August 28th with all divisions in action. The DMA USAC Midget Series will also be on hand.
