MAUMEE, OH (6-9-13) by Scott Porter – F.A.S.T. Public Relations
The racing action for the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title (F.A.S.T.) Championship Series presented by KS Sales & Service did not disappoint this weekend as numerous UNOH All Star regulars invaded the Northern Ohio speed plants with a rare off-weekend, but it was the tough F.A.S.T. Series regulars who would be triumphant in holding off a pair of past All Star Champions. Current F.A.S.T. Kistler Cup points leader Craig Mintz recorded a pair of sixth place runs and continues to sit atop the points. Not to be out done the JLH General Contractors F.A.S.T. 305 Championship Series put on a tremendous weekend of racing that saw Nate Dussel climb to the top of the points standings thanks to second place finish on Friday and claiming the checkered flag on Saturday.
A stellar field of 31 410 sprint cars signed in Friday night for the chance at the $3,000 winner’s share at Attica Raceway Park. A heavy track with a daunting cushion played into the hands of defending F.A.S.T. Series Champion Bryan Sebetto. Sebetto, aboard the Hammer Pallets, Crown Battery, JLH General Contractors backed Hammer Motorsports #24H, rocketed from outside of the front row to set a blistering pace for the feature event. The real battle was for second place as Brian Lay went wheel to wheel with Dale Blaney lap after lap around “Ohio’s Finest Racing” speed plant. Lay held off the veteran for 29 laps, but Blaney would outwit Lay on the last lap earning the runner-up spot. The third place performance by Lay would be a career best performance for the Genoa, Ohio driver in F.A.S.T. competition. Caleb Griffith and Byron Reed would round out the top-five.
In the JLH General Contractors F.A.S.T. 305 Championship Series, it was Dustin Dinan holding off the challenge from Nate Dussel to secure his first career Fremont/Attica Sprint Title feature win and his second win of the year. The two would drive off from the rest of the field leaving Jason Keckler, hard charging Jordan Ryan and Alvin Roepke in their dust to round out the top-five. The second place finish for Dussel would move the Bradner, Ohio native into first place in the season championship hunt for the $1,500 winner’s share at season’s end.
Attention turned to Fremont Speedway on Saturday and racing action took center stage after the induction ceremony of the fifth class into the speedway’s Hall of Fame. An epic battle would brew in the 30-lap feature for the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title as early race leader Caleb Griffith would encounter a challenge from Tim Shaffer as the pair raced in lap traffic. Using a lapped car for a pick move, the former multi-time All Star Champion Shaffer would momentarily take the lead away. Griffith would build his momentum back up on the high side around “The Track That Action Built” to eventually put a slider on Shaffer in turns three and four bringing the crowd to its feet and drive off to his first career 410 sprint car win. Rookie contender D.J. Foos, Byron Reed and Greg Wilson rounded out the top-five.
After taking the point lead one night earlier, Nate Dussel only had one thing on his mind and that was capturing the checkered flag and extending his points lead with just a handful of races left in the 10-race mini series. After putting himself into second place by lap 12, after starting in seventh, Dussel would try to capitalize on a restart to take the lead away from T.J. Michael. Michael would not step down and the duo raced side-by-side for a handful of laps until another yellow flag halted the race yet again. With a clear track in front of him, Dussel would drive off to pick up his second F.A.S.T. 305 victory and his sixth of the season in Northern Ohio.
After the dust had settled, Craig Mintz continues to lead the Kistler Racing Products F.A.S.T. Championship Series after another consistent weekend aboard the Reel-Geese Decoys, KS Sales & Service, GF-1 Chassis backed Mintz Motorsports #09. Caleb Griffith moved into second place and chiseled a bit off of Mintz’s lead. Griffith sits just 56 points behind Mintz after a top-5 run at Attica and a win at Fremont continuing a streak of three top-5 finishes aboard the Clark Racing #40DD. Continuing an impressive rookie campaign aboard a 410 sprint car, D.J. Foos moved up into third place now 79-markers out of first. After missing the feature the week before at Attica, Monclova, Ohio’s Byron Reed returned to form picking up his fourth and fifth top-5 finish of 2013 moving the 2010 F.A.S.T. Champion into fourth place. A disappointing weekend for the Burmeister Racing #16 dropped Chris Andrews into fifth place, but just three points back of Reed. Brian Smith sits in sixth place after a costly flip at Fremont after rubbing wheels with his Team CHR teammate Cap Henry. Wooster, Ohio’s Dean Jacobs aboard the McClure Motorsports #9 sits in seventh ahead of Duane Zablocki, while Brian Lay and Brad Bowman round out the top-ten.
Nate Dussel now sits atop of the JLH General Contractors F.A.S.T. 305 Championship Series by 28 points ahead of John Ivy. A pair of hard Charger performances by young hot shoe Jordan Ryan helped move him into third place ahead of Jason Keckler and Alvin Roepke who are tied for fourth. Mechanical issues at Attica and an early spin at Fremont cost Bobby Clark as he drops into sixth place. Dinan, sits in seventh, suffered engine woes on Saturday at Fremont showing how much luck can swing in motorsports. T.J. Michael had an impressive performance at Fremont rests in 8th, while Paul Weaver and Seth Schneider round out the top-five.
The battle for the $10,000 to win championship for the Kistler Racing Products Fremont/Attica Sprint Title presented by KS Sales & Service continues on next weekend at Attica on Friday, June 13th and Fremont Speedway on Saturday, June 14th. While racing continues for the 305 sprint cars during the next several weeks, the next JLH General Contractors F.A.S.T. 305 Series points event is not until the weekend of July 26th and 27th.
