PETERSEN MEDIA- Climbing aboard the Joe Gaerte owned No.3G for the Short Track Nationals, Shane Stewart overcame a very high pill draw during preliminary action, to race his way to a fifth place finish during the finale on Saturday night.
Starting dead last in the first heat race of the night on Friday night, Stewart had his elbows up on the hooked I30 Speedway as he carved his way up to a fourth place finish, earning very valuable passing points.
After his heat, third place finisher, Roger Crockett, failed to report to the scales, and was disqualified from his finish, and Stewart picked up more points as he was now credited with a third place finish.
Starting 11th in his qualifier, Stewart continued to show tremendous speed, as the Bixby, OK native turned Avon, IN resident carved his way up to a third place finish, putting him in the feature event, where he lined up in the second row for the 25-lap shootout.
Battling with Johnny Herrera, and Chad Kemmenah during most of the feature, Stewart slipped back to the fifth spot, as a surging Kevin Swindell moved by him from his 10th starting spot.
On the extremely fast track, Stewart would settle for the fifth place finish, putting him on the pole of a Saturday night B main.
Back in action on Saturday night, Stewart and the rest of the field waited out a rainstorm, and Stewart laid the hammer down in his B, and won from the pole on an extremely fast surface, and earned a spot in the feature event, where he lined up in the eighth spot.
Again finding himself battling with Herrera and Kemmenah, Stewart was inside the top five, on the tight I 30 Speedway.
With passing a little tough do to track conditions, Stewart held his own, and closed his weekend out with a fifth place finish.
“To get out of here with a top five in the feature is a pretty good finish,” Stewart said. “I knew we had our work cut out for us after we drew on Friday, but Joe (Gaerte) and everyone gave me a great car that raced well, and we battled back.”
Kicking off the busy week, Stewart was in action for the Short Track Nationals Open on Wednesday night, as a test for the prestigious event.
Scoring a sixth place finish in his heat, Stewart transferred into one of the B mains, and a fourth place finish did not transfer him into the feature event.
Just a week ago, Stewart was in California competing in the 20th Annual Trophy Cup in Tulare, CA with Finley Farms Racing.
With 81 cars checked into the event, Stewart went out 79th to qualify and timed in 48th fastest, making him the last driver to transfer into a heat race, as the track was extremely slick for the last half of the qualifiers.
Lining up seventh in his heat, Stewart worked his way up to a fourth place finish, but with the format only taking three to the feature, he was in the B main.
Lining up 19th in the B based on points, Stewart would work up to a 12th place finish, ending his night.
Saturday night saw Stewart lined up third in his heat race, and he went on to score a second place finish, putting him ninth in the B main again based on points.
Stewart had a strong car in the B, as he worked up inside a transfer spot in the semi, but he got into the wall, and a bent wheel would keep him out of the feature.
“Trophy Cup was rough,” Stewart said. “We timed in almost last on a terrible track, and couldn’t really recover. It’s a race that means a lot to me, and I wish we could have ran better, but I have to thank the Finley’s for giving me a chance to race at it.”
2013 BY THE NUMBERS- Starts-81, Wins-14, Top 5’s-39, Top 10’s-48.
