3 DRIVERS WIN; CLAUSON TAKES “EASTERN STORM” TITLE BY 1!

The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car series now prepares for the June 21 “Tony Hulman Classic” at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, to be followed by the June 22 appearance at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich.

Bryan Clauson, Daron Clayton, Dave Darland and Shane Cottle all shared the spotlight in last week’s Rotondo Weirich “Eastern Storm” events in Pennsylvania. Despite a rainout on Thursday at Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run, Pa., the three-race swing produced a spectacular point battle, with Clauson beating Darland by one and Clayton by two points for the Rotondo Weirich “Eastern Storm” title!

Clauson, of Noblesville, Ind., was second at Bechtelsville, third at Port Royal and fourth at Susquehanna, all races conducted in Pennsylvania.

Darland, of Lincoln, Ind., emerged as the new AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car point leader, winning Saturday’s race at Port Royal Speedway and adding a sixth and an eighth in the other two races. He leads Chase Stockon by 33 points entering the Terre Haute race June 21.

Clayton, of Sikeston, Mo. won Wednesday’s 40-lap “Jesse Hockett Classic” opener at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville. He passed Levi Jones on lap 29 and led the final 12 laps in his Merry Go Round Restaurant/Advanced Machine Spike/J & D. Clauson was second ahead of Jones, Hunter Schuerenberg and Stockon.

Darland led all 30 laps of Saturday’s race at Port Royal in his Racers Advantage/Jockish Flowers DRC/Foxco. Clayton was second and was followed by Clauson, Brady Bacon and Stockon.

Shane Cottle, of Kokomo, Ind., piloted the Viper Risk Management/Specialty Rigging “City of Syracuse” Spike/Rider to a wire-to-wire victory Sunday night at Susquehanna Speedway Park in Newberrytown. Kevin Thomas Jr. came home second ahead of Tracy Hines, Clauson and Robert Ballou.

9TH “INDIANA MIDGET WEEK” OPENS WEDNESDAY;
RACES AT GAS CITY, LINCOLN PARK, BLOOMINGTON, LAWRENCEBURG, KOKOMO

Five races comprise the 2013 “Indiana Midget Week” which opens Wednesday night and spans five different Indiana dirt tracks. It’s the ninth annual Honda USAC National Midget extravaganza.

Wednesday night’s opener is at Gas City I-6t9 Speedway, the only track which has hosted an event each year. Darren Hagen won last year’s Gas City opener and ended up winning the series title.

Thursday night’s race is at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, which hosts its fourth IMW event and produced a victory last year for 2009 and 2011 IMW Champion Bryan Clauson.

Bloomington Speedway hosts its sixth IMW event Friday night. Last year’s race at Bloomington went to Levi Jones.

Saturday’s venue is Lawrenceburg Speedway, where Hagen earned his second victory enroute to the 2012 title. It’s the eighth appearance of IMW at Lawrenceburg.

The series concludes Sunday night at Kokomo Speedway, also hosting its eighth IMW event. Kyle Larson won last year’s closer at Kokomo.

Indiana Midget Week opens the 2013 Honda USAC National Dirt Midget campaign. Since its 2005 debut Clauson has been the winningest driver, with six feature victories. Clauson, Shane Cottle and Tracy Hines have two titles, while Hagen and Coons each have a title, as well as Brad Kuhn, who split the 2010 championship with Hines.

CRA-CLASSIC AT OCEAN, SANTA MARIA HOSTS CRA

Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif. hosts a combination AMSOIL USAC/CRA and USAC Western Classic Sprint race Friday night. Saturday night the USCA/CRA machines tackle the Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway.

Drivers Damion Gardner and Ryan Bernal will be out to protect their point leads in the respective series. Gardner has a 31-point USAC/CRA lead over teammate Nic Faas, while Bernal has a 26-point Western Classic lead over D.J. Johnson.

Bernal won the April Sprint car appearance at Watsonville while Saturday’s race will be the 2013 USAC Sprint debut at Santa Maria.

SANTA MARIA JUNE 22 NEXT FOR WEST COAST SPRINTS;
VANDER WEERD TAKES KINGS 30-LAPPER

The USAC West Coast Sprint Cars will return to Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway June 22 and Richard Vander Weerd will continue his pursuit of series point leader Ryan Bernal. Vander Weerd trails Bernal by just 25 points after winning last Saturday’s 30-lap feature at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif.

Vander Weerd, of Visalia, Calif., led the final 12 laps of Saturday night’s race in his Vander Weerd Construction/Battery Worx Maxim/Shark. Bernal was second ahead of Danny Faria Jr., Austin Liggett and fast qualifier Dennis Howell. Faria led the first 18 laps.

Vander Weerd was his third this season, while Bernal has five wins and three seconds in just eight starts!

CENTRAL ARIZONA RACEWAY NEXT JUNE 22;
8TH ARIZONA WIN FOR DAVIS AT QUEEN CREEK

The USAC Southwest Sprint Cars resume action June 22 at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande, Ariz. Charles Davis Jr. won the May race at Casa Grande and trails R.J. Johnson by 63 points in the latest series standings.

Davis, of Buckeye, Ariz., has joined the logjam at the top of the all-time list of USAC race winners in the state of Arizona after his eighth career win Saturday night at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek.

Davis caught early leader Josh Pelkey on lap six and led to the finish in his Massey Motorsports RSS Industries/Rod End Supply RSS/Don Ott to beat Shon Deskins, R.J. Johnson, Chris Bonneau and Stevie Sussex.

Davis shares the all-time Arizona lead with A.J. Foyt, Dave Steele, Bryan Clauson and Damion Gardner.

WESTERN DIRT MIDGETS AT PETALUMA;
CHIVELLO WINS USAC/BCRA RACE AT MADERA

Petaluma (Calif.) Raceway hosts the Honda USAC Western Dirt Midgets Saturday night and point leader Ronnie Gardner will try to protect a 23-point lead in the standings. The event is co-sanctioned by BCRA.

Shane Golobic, who won the last USAC Western Dirt Midget race at Placerville, also won last year’s race at Petaluma.

Nick Chivello of Manteca, Calif. passed Scott Pierovich on the 28th lap Saturday night and led the final three laps to win the 30-lap “Pombo/Sargent Classic” USAC/BCRA Honda Western Midget race at Madera (Calif.) Speedway. Chivello led the first 21 laps and Pierovich the next six before the final pass. Tanner Swanson finished second ahead of Chad Nichols, Scott Pierovich and David Goodwill. Chivello piloted the Hubbard’s Auto Parts/Red Top Electric Spike/Esslinger.

The Honda USAC Western Pavement Midgets, led by point leader Chad Nichols, return to Madera July 13.

IGNITES TO XENIA, COLUMBUS & LAS VEGAS;
ALFREY TAKES 2, BIGGS GETS 1ST, ELLIOTT WINS TOO

USAC’s Eastern and Midwestern Honda Ignite Midget series combine for a pair of races in Ohio this weekend. Friday’s race is at Kik-Kare Raceway in Xenia and Saturday’s race is at the Columbus Motor Speedway. Chris Lamb stands at the top of the standings entering the two events.

The Honda USAC Western Pavement Ignite Midgets compete Saturday night at the Bullring at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway. Bryant Dawson is undefeated in three previous events there and is the series point leader as a result.

Toby Alfrey, Cory Elliott and Ariel Biggs recorded Honda USAC Ignite Midget wins last week. Alfrey, of Miamisburg, Ohio, won Midwest Dirt races Friday at Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway and Saturday night at Montpelier (Ind.) Motor Speedway. Biggs, of Elma, Wash., recorded her initial Washington Dirt race Saturday night at Skagit Speedway in Alger. Elliott, of Bakersfield, Calif., scored in the Western Dirt series at Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway.

Alfrey passed Stratton Briggs on lap 10 and led to the checkered flag at Gas City to beat Katlynn Leer, Briggs, Joey Greening and Gage Walker. At Montpelier he passed Walker on lap 17 and led the final nine laps to beat Walker, Briggs, Cooper Clouse and John Heydenreich.

Biggs earned her initial USAC feature victory Saturday at Skagit, leading all 20 laps of the Honda USAC Washington Ignite Dirt race. Robby Vaughn took second ahead of Robbie Price, Garrett Thomas and Chase Goetz. Biggs won the Elma Auto Racing Hall of Fame Fast Time Award, while Vaughn was the SPEEDMART hard charger and Price was the NWSPRINTCARHISTORY.com Rookie of the race. The Washington series resumes June 22 at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.

Elliott led the final 14 laps to win Saturday night’s 20-lap Honda USAC Western Ignite Dirt feature at Santa Maria Speedway. Jarid Blondel led two laps and finished second ahead of Brennan Rogers, Clayton Ruston and Christine Breckenridge, who led the first four laps of the race.

VIETS LEADS DMA BACK TO BEAR RIDGE

Scott Viets of East Granby, Conn. leads the USAC DMA Midget series to Saturday’s race at Bear Ridge Speedway. He has an 11-point lead over Kevin Chaffee after posting a second, third and a seventh in three races so far this season.

Ray Miller, Scott Holcomb and Josh Sunn have been the race winners so far in 2013. The Miller and Sunn wins were their first in series competition. Sunn ranks fourth in the standings, while Holcomb is eighth.

Inaugural series champion Joe Krawiec trails Viets by only 13 points after posting a second, fourth and seventh in three starts.

LEADERS CRIBBS, SAUNDERS RETURN TO PLYMOUTH SATURDAY

Point leader Billy Cribbs and Garrett Saunders find themselves atop the respective series point standings in USAC’s 600 Sprint activity at the Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway. The series continues this Saturday at the northern Indiana oval.

Cribbs led the last 16 laps of the 20-lap Open race last Saturday after Ron Dennis led the first four. Dakota Busche, Dawson Stealy, Eric Saunders and Brad Nichols rounded out the “top-five.” In the Restricted class. Saunders led the last four laps of the Restricted class feature after Devan Myers led the first 11. Myers was second ahead of Nicholas Schaefer, Bud McCune and Beau DeYoung.
