1.26.19 Canyon Speedway Park Results

Tony Steele, Peoria, Ariz. (Jan 27, 2019) – The season kicked off at Canyon Speedway Park for the 2019 season with another edition of the Winter Challenge. Once again, the IMCA Modified portion of the Winter Challenge was dominated by hometown hero Ricky Thornton Jr. Thornton drove from the 8th and 9th starting positions to win each feature, taking home $2,000 for the weekend and earning his spot on the Fast Shafts All Star Invitational ballot.

Saturday’s Arizona Differential Modified feature saw Thornton kick off the race in the eighth row while Clint Reichenbach grabbed a hold of the early race lead. Reichenbach would lead the way for the first four laps while Thornton worked his way through traffic. Lap five would see the one and only lead change for the day as Thornton would work his way towards his first check of the weekend. Day two would see Don Gumke kick things off from the pole position before making way to Zachary Madrid. Madrid led the way on the high side until Thornton worked up from the ninth position, trading slide jobs with Madrid for the lead. Thornton would officially take command of the race on lap five before walking away with his second win of the weekend. Reichenbach would take runner up honors both days while Jason Noll would fill out the podium on Saturday and Tyler Mecl on Sunday.

The Flexi Flyer/Askrens Trucking Sport Mod division saw two different winners over the weekend. Saturday would see Rex Higgins drive from Bloomfield, New Mexico all the way to victory lane, leading every lap. Mark Harrison would finish in second with Jack Aguilar rounding out the top three. Day two was all about the money with Cody Center in his notable $ machine outrunning the field after a tough weekend to pick up his first feature win of the day. Mark Harrison would lead the first 16 laps of the feature before eventually finishing sixth. Center started in the 16th position, last on the field, before maneuvering his way through the pack to lead the final four circuits. Speedy Madrid and Bo Partain would take the podium positions to close out the weekend.

The Allscapes Stock Cars would see a battle on the front row to kick the weekend off. George Fronsman was the early race leader from his outside front row starting position and never looked back. The defending track champion would lead green to checker as he picked up the win over polesitter Gene Henrie. Henrie wound up in the second spot with former Holiday Hustle winner Andy Altenburg in third. Jason Josselyn would kick things off up front for day two before Cody Center assumed the lead on lap three of the feature. Center would not relinquish the lead en route to his second feature win of the day, his first career double feature winning day in multiple divisions. John Parmeley would drive from fourth to second while Saturday winner George Fronsman would take home third.

Minot, North Dakota driver Adam Goff was a force to be reckoned with during his racing vacation as he took home three of his four events in the Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks. Goff kicked things off on Saturday with a heat race win before going on to win his feature. Goff lead the first four laps from his front row before giving way to perennial contender Joe Vlasity. Vlasity would lead the next six circuits before Goff would assume control of the feature once more, yet this time it would be for good. Vlasity would end his day in the seventh position while Nathan DeRagon and Joe Peterson would top the podium. Goff continued his winning ways on day two taking his heat race once again, but it would be Vlasity on Sunday who would not give way. Goff jumped out to the lead once more for the first seven trips around the speedway before Vlasity took control on lap eight, leading the way to the checkered flag. Goff would hold on for the runner up finish while Bradley Stafford took home third.

Darren Brown continued his winning ways in Peoria as the El Cajon, California driver swept the weekend in the only appearance by the Dwarf Cars during the 2019 Winter Challenge. 25 dwarfs were checked in for day one of the event and it would be former champion John Foster leading the first feature of the weekend to kick things off. Foster would give way on lap ten to eight place starter Darren Brown. Brown wouldn’t look back as he continued his domination at CSP, picking up another feature win. John Isabella and Ryan O’Connor took second and third in the main. Lucky number eight struck again in the second feature as Brown would take the green flag from the eight spot on Sunday as well. This time around it would take twelve laps for Brown to grab the lead from third place starter Peter Scully. Brown would lead the last nine laps en route to his sweep ahead of Dustin Washburn and Mac Marmon.

The 2019 Winter Challenge rolls on next weekend with an Open Practice on Friday, February 1st. Racing will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 2nd and 3rd. Gates open at 11am with Racing slated to begin at 1pm.

The IMCA Modifieds will once again be racing for $1,000 each day and a spot on the Fast Shafts Allstar Invitational Ballot. IMCA Northern Sport Mods will race for $750 to win each day with IMCA Stock Cars shooting for $500 to win and IMCA Hobby Stocks going for $250.
