10.12.18 NeSmith Late Models Results

EASTABOGA, AL – It was all Ashton Winger Friday night at Talladega Short Track, as the 18-year-old driver swept the Friday night NASCAR Weekend show for the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series driving the Keyser Manufacturing Rocket.  Winger set Fast Time, and then led all 40-laps in the main event to earn the $2,000 top prize and his third win of the season.

Winger’s win combined with the disqualification of Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, TN, who was the point leader going into the event, gave Winger the point lead.  Hedgecock was disqualified for intentionally driving his Eagle Racing Engines Rocket into Andy Picklesimer of Ooltewah, TN in the Hyma Motorsports Special during a lap three caution period.

The Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Rulebook states under National Event Penalties Paragraph 8 and Paragraph 12, a disqualification for anything other than a weight violation, carries a penalty of loss of points and money for the event.  That gives Winger a 42-point advantage over Hedgecock.

Jake Knowles of Rome, GA finished second in the Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Special, and he is now third in the in the Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National point standings, eight points behind Hedgecock.

Winger had no challengers, and was able to work lap traffic to the point he actually extended his lead over the second-place driver.  The Cruise With The Champions Rookie of the Year point leader and the Rookie of the Race was able to maintain a full straightaway lead.  Winger took the checkered flag with a 4.217 second margin of victory over Knowles.

“I was telling someone the other day, I like boring races,” Winger said.  “I won a race in Greenville, MS where we swapped the lead five times.  It was fun, but I bent everything on the race car.  Tonight, we’ve got a race car that’s ready to go for tomorrow night.”

Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, TN drove the Johns Timber Special to a third-place finish, and Bryant Marsh of Corinth, MS finished fourth in the Modern Woodmen of America Rocket.  Chase Edge of LaFayette, AL took the fifth spot in the Edge’s Gas Company Special.

Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL was the Hard Charger of the Race after starting the Skinner’s Body Shop CVR in the 19th starting spot and finishing sixth.  Picklesimer came home in the seventh spot to take the Mudd Sauce 7th-Place Award, and Greg Martin of Oliver Springs, TN was eighth in the Biff Motorsports Special.

Chase Walls of Decherd, TN finished ninth in the Michael Barnes Performance Special, and Todd Morrow of LaFayette, AL rounded out the top ten in the Morrow Racing Special.  In preliminary action, Winger out-timed the 38-car field in Knowles Race Parts and Bodies Qualifying with a lap in 14.321 seconds.  The two ten-lap B-Main Races were won by Austin Horton of Newnan, GA in the Super K Express Rocket and Tyler Wood of Hohenwald, TN in the Speedy Bs GRT.

The initial start of the race was yellow flagged on lap one when Picklesimer spun in turn four and that collected several other cars.  Everyone was able to continue for the complete restart.  Winger took the lead on the restart from the pole position followed by Johns, Edge, Marsh, and Knowles.

On lap four, Jake Rainey of Powder Springs, GA spun the Wren’s Body Shop Special in turn four to bring out the second caution flag of the race.  That set up a Dixie-Style Double-File Restart with Winger out front all by himself.

Doubled up behind the leader were Johns, Edge, Marsh, Knowles, Victor Turner Jr. of Pell City, AL in the Advantage Plus Mobile Home Service Rocket, Martin, Picklesimer, Walls, and Wood.  Knowles was able to get up on the outside groove and get by Marsh for the fourth spot on lap five.  Winger had a half-straightaway lead on Johns by lap ten, while Edge and Knowles battled for third.

Winger reached the cars on the tail of the lead lap on lap 12, and as he moved through lapped traffic, he extended his lead over Johns.  Knowles was still digging hard on the top shelf, and he got by Edge for the third spot coming off turn two on lap 16.  At the halfway point, Winger had opened up a full straightaway lead on Johns in heavy lapped traffic.

Knowles caught Johns on lap 25 to battle for the second spot in lapped traffic.  This time Knowles used the inside groove to dive under Johns in turn one of lap 32 to take over the second spot.  That move earned Knowles the VP Racing Lubricants Slick Move of the Race Award.  In the last eight laps of the race, there was no catching Winger.

The Durrence Layne Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series returns to Talladega Short Track on Saturday night for Night Two of the NASCAR Weekend with a $2,500-to-win, 50-lap main event, Round 13 of the 2018 season.
