11.21.21 Southern Nationals Fall Late Models Results
(November 21, 2020) Gray Court, South Carolina star Chris Madden emerged victorious on Saturday night at Senoia Raceway to claim his second ‘Billy Clanton Classic’ title! After touring the Senoia, Georgia gray gumbo fastest in Group B during the Schaeffer’s Oil Fall Nationals Series qualifying session, Chris won his heat race before starting the 60-lap series finale from the outside of the front row. The driver known as “Smokey” then grabbed the point from polesitter Shane Clanton on the thirteenth circuit and never looked back in picking up the $10,000 triumph ahead of Mike Marlar, Billy Moyer, Jr., Ashton Winger, and twelfth-starting Michael Page. Chris, who was last victorious in the annual ‘Billy Clanton Classic’ back in 2018, reached Fall Nationals victory lane for the first time on the second year miniseries. He wheeled a self-owned XR1 Rocket Chassis powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine to the victory with sponsorship from Drydene Performance Products, Millwood Plumbing, Henderson Amusement, Century Plastics, Davis Diesel Service, Worley Monument, Earnhardt Technology Group, Modern Images, VP Racing Fuels, and Penske Racing Shocks.
“The racetrack had some grip there to start with (after the track crew watered the surface prior to the Super Late Model feature) and we got hung up on the outside and it was a little bit slimy out there,” Madden said in victory lane. “But when we was able to line the racetrack out, our car come back to us. We got a real good run on Shane (Clanton) down there (in turn one to take the lead). I know that he didn’t know that I was down there and he tried to turn in and I was already there and we got together.”
A strong field of 35 competitors signed in to do battle at Senoia Raceway and Shane Clanton laid down the quickest lap overall during qualifying for his late father’s memorial race with a time of 14.264 seconds. Clanton, Mike Marlar, Chris Madden, and Ashton Winger each nabbed heat race wins at the Peach State facility, while Mark Page and Glenn Morris won the two consolation events. Joey Standridge utilized a series provisional to start shotgun on the field and climbed to a steady twelfth place feature showing.
Following the season-ending ‘Billy Clanton Classic,’ Donald McIntosh was celebrated as the 2020 Schaeffer’s Oil Fall Nationals Series Champion! Donald was consistent throughout the tour in racking up one feature win, three Top Five finishes, and four Top Ten performances. The Dawsonville, Georgia ace received a $5,053 paycheck for his efforts in besting a top five in points that included Joey Standridge, Stacy Boles, Vic Hill, and David Payne.
In the five series races that escaped the wrath of Mother Nature this year, there were no repeat winners, as Mike Marlar (Smoky Mountain Speedway), Donald McIntosh (Tazewell Speedway), Brandon Overton (Tri-County Race Track), Michael Page (Boyd’s Speedway), and Chris Madden (Senoia Raceway) all took home wins. A total of 99 different drivers entered at least one of the Schaeffer’s Oil Fall Nationals Series races in 2020 and 21 of those drivers found their way to at least two series contests.
