3.26.21 Pennsylvania Sprint Series Results
By: Frank Buhrman
Veteran Kevin Nagy of Wind Gap, Pa., who won his first limited-engine sprint car feature 19 years ago, started on the pole Friday night at Bridgeport Motorsports Park and held off multiple challenges and challengers to lead all 25 laps and score the feature win in Day 1 of the track’s Kingdom of Speed Weekend.
The IMCA/RaceSaver race was co-sanctioned by the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series, which hosted, and the PA Sprint Series.
Nagy, driving his own Nagy Excavating #45, first fought off outside front-row starter Phil Meisner, then, after Meisner brought out the race’s first caution, dealt with challenges from Rick Stief. Finally, Dave Brown took over second and mounted attacks on the race’s last two restarts, narrowly failing to displace the winner.
At the checkers, Nagy led Brown across the line by 1.736 seconds, with Dom Melair finishing 1.205 seconds farther back in third, a position he held despite a broken front wing. Melair paced the PA Sprint Series regulars.
Rory Janney finished fourth, ahead of Bryant Davis. Larry McVay, Zach Bealer, Cody West, John Brennfleck and Eddie Wagner completed the top 10.
In a 37-car field, Bealer and West both were making their first RaceSaver starts. The former started 17th, while the latter came from the rear of the feature twice.
The race’s only serious incident came on lap 12 when five cars tangled in the third and forth turns. Kristina Pratt, the 2020 MASS Rookie of the Year, had her car tip over in the melee, but no injuries were reported.
Heat races were particularly competitive in the crowded field and were won by Nagy, Ryan Stillwagon, Stief and Melair. Twin B-Mains went to Zach Berghof and West.
The race was the first of several co-sanctions involving MASS and PASS this season, with the next being Friday, June 11, at Big Diamond Speedway. Others will be held at Bloomsburg Fair Speedway and BAPS Motor Speedway.
