3.31.18 Enid Speedway Results

By John Rittenoure, ENID, Okla. (March 31, 2018) – Strong winds and cold temperatures greeted fans for the Enid Speedway opener on Saturday. However 93 competitors braved the cold and a good turnout of fans watched a night of competitive racing.

Four classes of cars were on hand headlined by the Sprint Series of Oklahoma and Shane Sellers won by a slim margin over Gary Owens.

Owens drove off the pole into the early lead over past champion Andy Shouse and fourth starting Sellers. But Owens lead was short lived.

Sellers passed Shouse for second on lap 2 and quickly reeled in Owens taking over the lead on lap 3. Sellers and Owens ran 1-2 the rest of the way.

However on lap 16 Owens begin closing the gap on Sellers and pulled inside to challenge for the lead in lap 2 of the final lap. Sellers surged back ahead and crossed the finish line just a couple of car lengths ahead of Owens. Shouse settled for third with Zach Blurton and Travis Scott rounding out the top five.

Defending champion Cole Traugott won the Sooner Modified season opener which was shortened by five laps due to a series turn one crash.

Traugott had taken over the lead from Greg Burt and was setting the pace when Milt David caught the end of the guardrail entering turn one and crashed hard. Fortunately David was not injured but his car was destroyed.

Due to extended clean up time and the cold the race was ended with five laps remaining.

A field of 30 sport mods produced a good night of racing and a win for Jeffrey Kaup.

Kaup jumped into the early lead only to give way to pole sitter Brandon Kenny on lap six. On lap 16 Kenny tangled with Robert Elliott in turn two taking both out of the race. After the two displayed some unsportsmanlike conduct with their cars both were black flagged from the race.

Kaup inherited the lead back and outran Todd Decker and Mark Harrison to the finish.

Lance Sessions made his pole position stand for a green to checkered run to victory in the pure stock feature. Sessions won over Tommy Bohnstedt.

Racing resumes Saturday with the Spring Nationals featuring Sooner Late Models vs. the National Championship Racing Association (NCRA) Late Models. Sooner Limited Modifieds will make their first Enid Speedway appearance of the season along with the return of the Pure Stocks.

Race time is 7 p.m.
