Abbottstown, PA (April 20, 2024) – After a trip to the Midwest and a High Limit Racing feature win in Texas, Anthony Macri made the trip back home for Saturday’s $20,000 to win Weldon Sterner Memorial. The 20th Weldon Sterner Memorial was originally scheduled for the 2023 season and after two rainouts in 2023, the marquee event kicked off the big money races in Central PA for 2024.
After winning his heat race, Macri drew the pole for the start of the 40-lap feature in the redraw. Anthony shot out to the lead and after the halfway point, moved to the top of the track and ran his signature line against the wall. “Honestly, I think running out on the road and running some of the tracks we ran made me more comfortable running the wall like that. Being on the road can be stressful at times but it pays off when we come back home.”
There was excitement before the green flag waved for the start of the $20,000 to win Weldon Sterner Memorial when Danny Dietrich, who was slated to start fifth, went to the pits after not firing on the track. The Gary Kauffman Racing team thrashed on the car but to no avail, as Danny was not able to make the call.
Anthony Macri and Ryan Newton led the field to the green flag for the start of the 40-lap feature. Macri shot to the lead with Newton in second and Freddie Rahmer in third. Troy Wagaman challenged Freddie for third and had it by a nose at the line on lap 2. Rahmer took the position back on lap 3.
Cory Haas spun in turn 1 after contact with the inside wall bringing out the yellow on lap 3.
The top five for the early race restart were Macri, Newton, Freddie, Wagaman and Lucas Wolfe.
Macri drove through the middle of turns 1 and 2 with Newton opting for the bottom. Rahmer closed in on Newton and was putting the heat on him for second. Both Kyle Moody and Matt Campbell were working their way up through the field and got into a three-car battle with Billy Dietrich for sixth.
The leaders entered lapped traffic on lap 11. Rahmer used lapped traffic to reel in Newton and made the pass for second on lap 12. Freddie then went to work closing in on Macri. Two lapped cars were battling for position in front of Macri and Rahmer was using the bottom to gain on Anthony when the yellow came out on lap 18 for debris on the front stretch.
Macri drove through the middle of turns 1 and 2 and Rahmer was on the bottom for the restart and was able to stick with Macri. Wagaman got by Newton for third.
Macri was doing what he does best, riding the wall around the 3/8-mile oval.
Lapped traffic came into play again on lap 25, but this time it did not slow Macri down.
Tyler Ross fell off the pace and stopped on the front stretch bringing out a caution on lap 33. With seven laps to go, the top five for the restart were Macri, Rahmer, Wolfe Wagaman and Newton.
Rahmer tried a groove higher than Macri through the turns on the restart to no avail. With the laps winding down, Wolfe was closing in on Rahmer and got to his bumper as the white flag waved.
Still riding the wall, Macri took the checkered 2.412 seconds ahead of Rahmer. Wolfe crossed the line third and Wagaman was fourth. Newton completed the top five.
TJ Stutts was the Hard Charger, driving from 23rd to 11th and Danny Dietrich was given the Hard Luck award. Heat race winners, Lucas Wolfe, Billy Dietrich, Cameron Smith and Anthony Macri also earned bonus money as part of the Weldon Sterner Memorial. Freddie Rahmer set quick time with a lap time of 13.768 seconds.
Rookie Ayden Hare Impresses in First 358 Victory
Rookie, Ayden Hare, scored his first 358 victory in only his fourth start in the division on Saturday night at the Weldon Sterner Memorial. Hare, who turned 16 earlier in the week, took home $1,669 for the win.
Pole-sitter, Scott Fisher led the field into turn 1 but Hare hare took the lead coming out of turn 2 and led lap 1. Frankie Herr was all over Fisher for second but could not find a way around him.
Lapped traffic did not slow Hare down as he continued to pull away from the field. Fisher eventually created some distance between him and Herr, leaving Frankie to fend off a challenge from Doug Hammaker.
Jayden Wolf ended up on his side in turns 3 and 4 on lap 11 bringing out the red. Wolf had been running eighth at the time of the incident.
Fisher tried the bottom through the turns on the restart but Hare blocked the line and got a great run coming off of turn 2.
Hare spent the remaining laps pulling away from the field and took his first checkered flag in a 358 sprint car nearly two seconds ahead of Fisher. Herr crossed the line third and Hammaker was fourth. Adam Carberry completed the top five.
The Hard Charger of the feature was Jude Siegel who raced from 22nd to 15th. The Hard Luck Bonus was awarded to Jayden Wolf. The 358 sprint car heat race winners, Doug Hammaker, Jayden Wolf, Frankie Herr and Tyler Ulrich each took home an extra $100 as part of the Weldon Sterner Memorial.
Next Saturday, April 27, Lincoln Speedway is back in action with the 410 Sprints and 358 Sprints. Racing is scheduled for 6PM with pit gates opening at 3:30PM and grandstand gates opening at 4PM.
