4.21.18 Waynesfield Raceway Park Results

WAYNESFIELD, Ohio (4/21/18) – The 14th season of racing at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio was ushered in Saturday under the lights with four divisions of racing action. The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wings, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts were all on the season opening card. The night turned into a moment of firsts for two drivers seeing their first ever victories at Waynesfield.

The night started with the 15 lap Block Insurance Tough Truck A-main. Terry Klopfenstein and Stephen Brewer led the field of trucks to the first A-main green of the night. Klopfenstein took the early lead and led the opening lap. Four-time track champion Chris Hicks made his way into the third spot with just a few laps in the books. A three-way battle for the lead formed with Klopfenstein, Hicks, and Bill Keeler all in the mix. Hicks took his 71 machine to cushion trying to find the best position to challenge for the lead. The battle moved Keeler into the top spot and Hicks into second with just 10 to go. Keeler led the race for the next few laps until Hicks began to make a run on Keeler for the lead. Keeler’s 20K was hooked up and flying around the one third mile with just under five to go in the race. Keeler’s luck ran out as he blew an engine exiting turn four giving Hicks the lead and the victory. Klopfenstein came in second with Roy Miller finishing third. Chris Hicks and Frankie Weigt picked up the heat race wins.

The Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wing Sprints started the season strong with a field of 24 cars signing it to compete. The 25 lap A-main was brought to green by the 52 of Isaac Chapple and the 24L of Lee Underwood. About to tick one lap off the board, the red flag flew for the 0 of Steve Irwin. Irwin went upside down exiting turn three promoting an immediate stop in the action. Korbyn Hayslett and Steve Little were also involved and retired to the pit area for the main. Trial number two to get the main event underway was unsuccessful as a caution flew for the 51 of Curtis Muhlenkamp. The third attempt was a success with Lee Underwood taking the early lead. Matt Westfall managed to slip his way into the second spot early in the event, ready to challenge for the lead. Underwood slipped back in the event to finish sixth. With Westfall now in the lead, it was Kody Swanson’s turn to make a run on Westfall. Lap after lap, Swanson reeled in the 33M of Westfall as laps began to tick down. A late race caution was not enough for Swanson giving Matt Westfall the win. Swanson finished second. Isaac Chapple maintained to finish in third. Underwood, Chapple, and Westfall picked up heat race victories. Chapple set quick time with a 12.911 second lap. Ty Tilton picked up the B-main victory.

The Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints took the track for 20 laps of racing. Ron Coleman and Justin Kirk lead the field to the opening green flag. Neither driver in row one claimed the lead on the opening lap. Rather, Ryan Barr from his outside row two starting spot took control of the field. The sole incident of the main came early on in the form of a red flag for the 81H of Anthony Haas. Haas made contact with 11J of James Moore exiting turn three as Haas attempted to pass. Haas climbed out from behind the wheel uninjured. Both drivers retired from the event. Back under green, Barr continued to lead the way. Ron Coleman tried to reel in Barr until he lost a battle with Chris Bounds for the second spot. Like Coleman, Bounds was no match for Barr’s 21B giving the 16-year-old Piqua, Ohio driver his first ever win at Waynesfield. Ron Coleman muscled back to finish in second with Chris Bounds finishing in third. Barr was met in victory lane by his family who double as his pit crew. Nick Daugherty and Chris Bounds picked up the heat race wins.

The Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts rounded out the opening night of speed. Justin Durflinger and Frankie Weigt led the field to the opening green flag. Durflinger won the drag race into the turn one and led the opening lap. The XS of Austin Scott began to make a surge through the field moving into the second spot in the opening laps. A caution would pause all movement up front as a car went around in turn two. After the restart, Durflinger continued to lead the way as the field was given the halfway signal. Scott began to catch Durflinger and a made a move to take the lead. The move was successful moving Scott into the lead with laps clicking down. Rob Sharpe in the 96K made a similar move and jumped into the runner-up spot with just five laps remaining. Sharpe had nothing for the “Racing Relator”, giving Scott his first ever Waynesfield victory. Rob Sharpe finished in second with Justin Durflinger taking home a third-place podium finish. Scott celebrated his first ever trip to victory lane by climbing to the top of the catch fence in front of a large group of spectators cheering him on. Rob Sharpe and Piqua, Ohio driver James Sorrell took home the heat race wins.

Waynesfield Raceway Park will be back in action next Saturday, April 28th for the 2018 Spring Fling featuring the Quest Federal Credit Union Non Wings, Performance Powder Coating AMSA Mini Sprints, Block Insurance Tough Trucks, and Indian Lake Outfitter Compacts. Adult general admission is just $12 for the event. Pit side gates will open at 4PM; grandstands at 5PM. Cars hit the track for hot laps at 6PM with the first green flag of the night flying at 7PM.
