4.25.14 Albany Saratoga Speedway Results
Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway dropped the green flag on week number two of the 2014 racing season Friday night and when all was said and done a familiar jet, a first time winner, a couple of fan favorites and a defending track champion each landed in victory lane.
Brett Hearn, of Sussex, New Jersey claimed the DIRTcar Modified feature event win nearly a month shy of the 20th anniversary of his first career win at the Great Race Place. One half of the Brandon Bandito’s Joey Scarborough won his first career Sportsman feature event while Colin Bokus brought home the Limited Sportsman feature event win. Krazy Kenny Martin won the DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event while Bill Duprey returned to victory lane in the Street Stock division.
Ronnie Johnson and Mike Perrotte led the field to the green flag with Johnson taking the Palmer’s Service Center/Witz Roofing number 2RJ to the lead first. The race was three laps old when the red flag waved for a large pileup in between turns one and two. At least ten cars were involved including Peter Britten, Jeremy Wilder, Brian Gleason, Jimmy Davis and Keith Flach. Last week’s feature winner Marc Johnson would suffer a left rear flat tire in the incident however he returned to finish eighth.
Johnson would lead on the restart with Perrotte and Jeff Trombley close behind. Perrotte’s good run would come to an end on lap five when he slowed between turns three and four. Following an incident involving Keith Flach on the restart racing would resume with Johnson leading Jeff Rockefeller, Trombley, Matt Delorenzo and Kenny Tremont, Jr. Trombley would move back into the second position on lap seven with Hearn breaking into the top five on lap nine.
Once in the top five Hearn was drawn to the lead, taking fourth from Delorenzo on lap ten and then immediately past Rockefeller for third. Hearn would then take second from Trombley on lap 13. The Jersey Jet would erase Johnson’s large lead within a lap and start to hound the third generation driver.
Johnson and Hearn would run one-two, entertaining the large crowd with side by side racing until Hearn would get past on lap 20. Tremont would follow into second on lap 21. Once out front Hearn would pull away from the field for the feature win. Tremont would settle for second with Johnson third, Trombley fourth and Tyler Dippel a very strong fifth. Dippel started the deepest in the field, rolling off 26th.
“I have really got a good car this year,” Hearn said. “I can move around the track and do things that I haven’t been able to do in a while. I want to thank Madsen Overhead Doors, Kevin Cross, Steve Hough Motors, Don Kruger, 417 Bus Lines and my awesome team. We are off to a good start.”
A total of 32 drivers entered the event with all scheduled to start the 35 lap feature. Heat races were won by Trombley, Ronnie Johnson and Perrotte.
Joey Scarborough would pick up the win in the first leg of the Featherfoot Warrior Sportsman Series; the win was his first career trip to victory lane at the Great Race Place. Joey, the son of nine time DIRTcar Modified feature winner Don Scarborough, would start the event from the pole position with veteran Jack Gentile alongside. Gentile would power the Cyndi Lou Motorsports machine to the lead with Scarborough and Timothy Davis following.
As the race neared the one fifth mark Scarborough was all over Gentile for the lead as the duo raced side by side. Scarborough was ahead by a nose as they crossed the line to click off lap number five and within two laps had solid control of the lead. Scarborough would pull away and by lap ten had about a ten car length lead over the veteran from Ballston Lake.
The first caution flag of the race would slow the field on lap 14 as last week’s feature winner Brett Wright spun in turn three following contact from Mike Ostrander. Ostrander would be sent to the rear of the field for his part in the incident which also collected Derrick McGrew.
Gentile would lead on the restart with Scarborough and Davis following. Cody Bleau would make his presence known on lap 20 when he moved into third and set his sights on the battling duo of Gentile and Scarborough. Nick Anatriello would bring out the final caution flag on lap 22 when he brought the HICO Fabrications number nine to a stop on the front stretch.
Scarborough would be the leader when racing returned to action with Bleau moving to second and Gentile third. Bleau was all over Scarborough on the last lap but in the end he could not get past the Crash Palace Collision Center/Rogers Recon number 38 of Scarborough. Scarborough would bring home the win over the Greg’s Towing & Repair number 173 of Bleau, defending track champion Jeremy Pitts, Gentile and Robert Bublak. Pitts took his Grennon Project Services number 27 past Gentile late in the event for third.
A total of 29 drivers entered the event with heat race wins going to Scarborough, Gentile and the Tom Clothier, Jr. Trucking number 23 of McGrew.
Kenny Martin, Jr. would pick up the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event win. The win was the ninth of his career at the track.
The event would get off to a slow start as five cars piled up in between turns one and two on the start. All drivers would continue. Kim Duell and Dave DePaulo would bring the field to the green with DePaulo taking the early lead over Duell and Bill Smith. Danny Wood brought the Mendoza’s Body Shop number 181 into the third position on lap two relegating Smith to fourth.
Martin meanwhile was on the charge. After starting fifth Martin would move into the third position by lap four and a lap later was all over Duell for second. By lap ten DePaulo had Martin and last week’s feature winner Rob Yetman all over him for the lead. The trio would race hard and clean until the caution flag waved on lap 15 for DePaulo who spun his Witz Roofing number 21s in turn two.
On the restart Martin would have Yetman all over him. The duo raced side by side for most of the remainder of the race. In the end Martin would bring the Charlton Oil Company/BOBCO Video number 93 home for the win over Yetman’s Lazzaro’s Auto Body number seven. Vermont’s Ed Thompson would finish third with Byron Wescott and Nick Stone rounding out the top five.
A total of 18 DIRTcar Pro Stock’s entered the event with heat races being won by Duell and Dan Older.
Colin Bokus would pick up the win in the 12 lap Limited Sportsman feature event. Bokus and third generation racer Chris Ronca would lead the field to the green with Bokus taking the early lead. The pair would run one-two until Ronca went a bit high in turn two and slipped over the banking causing him to fall to the eighth position.
At the halfway point Bokus had nearly a straightaway advantage over the DAB Towing and Recovery number 12 of David Emigh. In the end Bokus would bring the Rounds Paving/Milwaukee Crusher Company number 39 home for the win over Emigh, Zach Daurio, Alissa Cody and John Lindblade. Heat races for the 20 car field were won by Bokus, Ronca and Emigh.
Bill Duprey won the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. Fred Harris and Jody Thew led the field to the green with Thew taking the early lead over Harris and Scott Lawrence. Duprey would move to third past Lawrence on lap two and then quickly past Harris for second.
By lap five Duprey was all over Thew for the lead and before the lap could be completed had taken over the top spot. Despite a late race caution Duprey would bring the Tom’s Bait and Tackle/Fat Tom’s Auto number 44d home for the win over Josh Coonradt, Paul Braymer, Frank Monroe and Nathan Dahoda. A total of 17 drivers entered the event.
The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action this Friday night with all divisions in action plus the Four Cylinders. The Sportsman division will compete in a $1,000 to win event. The green flag drops at 7pm.
