4.8.16 MLRA Late Models Results
Wheatland, Missouri (April 8, 2016) – The semi-retired Billy Moyer rolled into Lucas Oil Speedway and walked away with the $2,000 top prize, Friday, in the opening round of the 3rd Annual Spring Nationals Presented by http://www.RacingJunk.com.
The win for Moyer is the 806th of his Hall of Fame career and first of the season. He led from the drop of the green and was never seriously challenged.
“It was pretty good tonight,” said Moyer in Andy’s Frozen Custard Victory Lane. “It didn’t drive how I wanted it to, but it was fast for sure. We had tons of traction, we’ve just got to maybe get it to circle the center better. If it wins, it don’t matter what it is, it just makes it a little harder to drive that way.”
Jimmy Mars made the long trek from his home in Menomonie, Wisconsin. His second place finish, marked the first time he had sat behind the wheel since racing in Arizona in January. Mars did his work early in the race moving up three spots.
“You want to win, but you get by Moyer that’s alright I guess, it’s fun beating him though too. It’s a little confusing when the track is wet and slimy. Last night we felt real good when the track was slick. Overall it went good. We got a second, so we’ll take that.”
With two of the sport’s icons occupying the top two positions, Republic, Missouri’s Payton Looney finished up third. In his first full year of Super Late Model racing the young driver looked wise beyond his years as he navigated lapped traffic and kept his car underneath him.
“We we’re pretty good there in the heat race, them mom came down with the lineup and said we started next to Moyer,” commented Looney. “We had an alright race car. The slicker it got the worse we got. Lapped traffic there killed me. We’re happy to come away with third.”
Bobby Pierce and Jason Papich completed the top five. Heat race victories went to Jason Papich, Jack Sullivan, Billy Moyer, Payton Looney and Gavin Landers.
Racing begins Saturday at 7:30 PM with another complete show for the Lucas Oil MLRA. $5,000 is up for grabs, with the extra purse money courtesy of Pitts Homes, celebrating their 45th Anniversary in business. Mary Jenkins, wife of the late Ron Jenkins, who founded the original Wheatland Raceway has also put up $500 to the winner.
