Orrville, Ohio

Saturday, May 1, 2021

By Mike Swanger

The racing action returned to Wayne County Speedway with a Fast Five show Saturday night with the Malcuit Tavern Super Late Model feature hitting the track first with Corey Conley and Ryan Markham bringing the field to the green flag with Conley getting the early lead with Markham on his tail as Mitch Caskey and Nathon Loney right behind. The foursome would be bunched together as Caskey would edge into second on lap four but Markham regained the spot on the next circuit. Loney would take third from Caskey on lap 6. Markham would start to put the pressure on Conley and coming out of turn two on lap 8, Markham slipped past for the lead. Loney would move in on Conley at the same time and took over second on lap 10 but his car would start smoking and pulled off on the next lap. Caskey motored into second on lap 11 and as he was challenging Markham for the lead, would spin in turn four to bring out the caution. Then on the 18th lap, Caskey was back up to fourth but a flat tire sent him to the pits for a new tire and putting Larry Bellman and Wes Morrison third and fourth. In the closing laps, Markham would hold off Conley with five to go as Caskey came flying back up and regained second from Conley with three to go and as the checkered flag waved, Markham crossed the line with a two car length advantage and park the Ashland based B & B Drain Service, Beer Barrel Drive Thru and Mars Trucking #5m into the Summit Racing victory circle and his 70th career win at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’. Caskey finished second with Conley, Bellman and Morrison filling out the top five. Caskey and Loney topped the heat wins as J R Gentry was the fast timer at 16.871 seconds. Gentry was to start on the pole of the feature and before the race started, the drive shaft dropped on the #14.

Nick Patterson out hustled Jordan Ryan into turn one of the Pine Tree Towing & Recovery Sprint feature as Tyler Street took second following a lap 2 restart after a spin for Trey Jacobs. A caution on lap five for R J Jacobs would line the field up again and as the green waved, Danny Mumaw, Troy Kingan and Jordan Harble got together on the front stretch that sent Kingan and Harble flipping to bring out the red flag as both drivers climbed out ok and ending their nights along with Mumaw’s. With the race resuming, Patterson held the lead with Street looking for a way to get around Patterson. Making a move to the bottom of the track in turn three, Street was able to slip past Patterson for the top spot. Broc Martin moved into third at the same time as Dean Jacobs passed Ryan on the next circuit for 4th. Streetbegan to stretch his lead to more than a half a straightawy lead and with five to go, Martin was able to get by Patterson for second. With the checkered flag getting ready to wave for Street, he got into Nate Reeser in turn four and both would come to a stop and Street would have to go on the hook and for the second time this season at WCS, Street was denied a certain victory after tangling with a lapped car. Martin would inherit the lead and hold off Dean Jacobs for the win and the Orrville driver put the Chaser’s Drive Thru, Orrville Trucking and Santmyer Energy #83m into the Summit Racing victory circle for the second time this year. Dean Jacobs was second followed by Patterson, Ryan and Jamie Myers. Posting the heat wins were Street, Harble and Chris Myers as Dylan Kingan claimed the last chance race. Trey Jacobs was the quick timer at 14.815 seconds.

The CORBON Ammunition Modified main would see D J Cline use the outside front row starting position to set the pace for the first 8 circuits and as he was doing that 8th starting Kyle Moore and 10th starting Nathon Loney was on the move to the front. Moore took second on lap four and closed in on Cline as Scott Peltz ran third in front of Loney. Moore was looking for an opening to get past Cline and as they went down the backstretch, Moore went low going into turn three and the Mansfield driver was able to slide up in front of Cline to take the lead as Loney had closed in on the two front runners. As the threesome battled in turn four Loney would make a move to pass both Moore and Cline but Loney would spin and go to the tail. On the restart, Moore and his Arnold Motorsports, Kepling Floors and Moore Brothers Racing #1* would pull away and when the checkers flew was more than a straightaway in front of the field for the win. Loney would come back to take second with Cline third and Austin Seelig and Richard Grogg rounded out the top five. Moore and Mark Gardiner collected the heat wins.

The McKenzie Concrete Super Stock feature was one that the saying ‘cautions cause cautions’ was true, the field was always bunched together. Matt Shroyer would grab the lead the drop of the green and set the pace for the first ten laps with Took Wiles and Don Rutt in pursuit early in the race and Brandon Morrow joining the chase in the last five laps. After a lap 10 caution, Wiles would edge past Shroyer on the double file restart and lead the next two laps with Rutt taking second the next time around. With another yellow waving on lap 13, it was Wiles and Rutt side by side and as the field was bunched together and everyone wanting the win, Wiles got bumped fron behind as he was leading and slid off the back stretch and went on back to the pits from there as Rutt was now the leader and the Wooster driver would keep Morrow at bay and win his first points feature aboard the D L Rutt Builders, Suttle Specialties and Precision Graphics #910. Rutt has won two other feature and both were non points races. Morrow would finish second with Shroyer third. Codee Schneider had a career best fourth place finish with Kyle Moore in fifth. Heat winners were Paul Holmes and Took Wiles.

Loudonville’s Jordan James made it two wins in a row in the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stock feature as he started on the outside front row and never looked back as he lead all the way aboard the Brad’s Auto Body, Lorentz Lawn Care and Lochevale Farms #83. The only thing that slowed James up was a red flag when Steven Lester flipped in turn one on the second lap, Kyle Petit would take second on lap four to finish in the runner up spot as Stephen Crowe outraced Mitch Reichard for third and Zach Hershey rang up a fifth place finish Dustin Bedlion and Travis Hutton topped the heat races.

Winning the Rich’s Tire and Service Hard Chargers were Ryan Abel in the Late Models, Jason Dolick in the Sprints, Austin Seelig in the Modifieds, Brandon Morrow in the Super Stocks and Stephen Crowe in the Mini Stocks.

Next Saturday night, May 8, Wayne County Speedway will host the Wayne County Truck and Tractor Pull with the Tractors starting pulling at 10 am and the trucks at 7 pm.

The next racing at WCS will be on Saturday, May 15 with another Fast Five program.
