5.11.19 Hamilton County Speedway Results
Despite chilly weather, race fans flocked to the Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive on Saturday for another round of the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series on Teacher Appreciation Night presented by Pepsi.
For braving the cool air, spectators were treated to another thrilling night on the historic half-mile clay oval while the competitors were once again greeted by a nearly flawless track surface that produced three winners from the fifth and sixth rows on the starting grid.
The deepest start that resulted in a visit to Integrity Trucking Victory Lane came from defending Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stock track champion Eric Stanton of Carlisle, who found his way to first place via the 12th starting spot.
Last week’s national Allstar Performance Allstar of the Week used a caution with seven laps remaining to sneak into second place and then tracked down five-time national champ Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., two laps later and completed the winning pass for his third win in three tries this season.
Bryce Sommerfeld of Fort Dodge and tenth-starting Justin Luinenburg of Reading, Minn., also slipped by Gulbrandson to claim second and third while Ankeny’s Jamie Songer rounded out the top five.
Also coming from the sixth row, Joel Rust of Grundy Center started on the inside in the 11th spot and powered his way to the front in capturing his second straight Olsen Family USRA Modified main event.
Humboldt’s Nate Hughes got to the lead midway through the race and appeared to be on his way to his first win since opening night last year, but the yellow flag waved with three laps to go when early race leader Jacob Murray suffered a flat tire.
Still, Hughes was in control until the final corner when Rust went to the low side while Hughes hugged the cushion. The two exited the turn side by side with Rust able to slide up in front of Hughes at the checkered flag and secure the $1,000 top prize.
Defending track champion J.D. Auringer of Waterloo bounced back from an early-race flat tire that sent him to the rear of the pack and finished third. Kyle Brown of Madrid and nine-time USMTS national champion and hall-of-famer Kelly Shryock of Fertile finished fifth.
In the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Car feature race, veteran racer Steve Jackson of Polk City suffered nearly the same fate as Hughes when 10th-starting Derek Green of Granada, Minn., passed him for the lead coming out of the fourth turn with the checkered flag in the air.
It was another last-corner pass, another photo-finish and another winner from deep in the field as Green nipped Jackson for the win with Waterloo’s Dylan Suhr close behind in third. Brian Mahlstedt of Ionia and points leader Reid Keller of Webster City completed the top five.
Two drivers, however, parlayed pole position starts into dominating wins on Saturday night.
Decorah’s Tyler Bruening dominated from the drop of the green flag to capture the win in the main event for the Super Late Models presented by Malvern Bank.
Behind him there were some solid battles for position with Charlie McKenna of Cedar Lake holding off Ryan Griffith of Webster City for the runner-up paycheck while last week’s winner, Jason Hahne of Webster City, finished fourth, just ahead of Darrell DeFrance of Marshalltown.
A first-time winner emerged in the Stein Heating & Cooling USRA B-Mods when polesitter Levi Chipp of Latimer led every lap to take home the winner’s trophy.
Colby Fett of Algona claimed runner-up honors with Jared Boumeester of Waseca, Minn., taking third. Meanwhile, defending track champ Ty Griffith roared from 12th to fourth in front of his hometown crowd while current points leader Jason Bass of Fort Dodge followed him across the finish line in fifth.
The biggest turnout of MyRacePass.com USRA Tuners produced another new winner with Trent Orwig of Ottumwa taking the victory over polesitter Oliver Monson of Clear Lake. Matt Oberhelman of Fort Dodge climbed from 10th to third, Lucus Jones of Fort Dodge finished fourth and Garner’s Sam Umbarger was fifth.
