5.11.19 Hummingbird Speedway Results

By: Steven Curry

Reynoldsville- A bright, sunny sky welcomed fans from all over the area back to Hummingbird Speedway for the second night of racing. The night also marked the first of four dates that the Young Gun Jr Sprint Series joined us for racing. 11-year-old Sam Darby picked up the win in the Open Class while 7-year-old Randy White claimed victory in the Stock Class. Other feature winners on the night included: Brandon Connor of DuBois in the Cypress Clock & Gift Shop Street Stocks, Doug Surra of Kersey in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair & Service Semi-Late Models, Daniel Clark of DuBois in the Lockwood Processing Four-Cylinders, Dennis Harrison Jr of Allegany, NY in the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks, and Kyle Knapp of Brookville in the BWP Bats Super Late Models.

11-year-old Sam Darby and 14-year-old Tyler Allison led the field of 7 Young Gun Jr Sprints trackside for their opening 12-lap feature race. Darby jumped out to the lead on the initial start with Allison and Stone Lapcevich following behind. Darby continued to lead over Allison and Lapcevich for the opening handful of laps before a caution for a spin in turn 2 setup the first restart of the race. On the first and only restart of the race, Allison challenged Darby for the lead briefly before Darby began to check out on the field. Darby continued to lead as the laps clicked away with Allison and Lapcevich following in second and third respectively. Darby went unchallenged in the final laps on his way to picking up the win. Allison, Lapcevich, Luke Mulichak, and Evan Darby rounded out the top 5. In the Stock Class, 7-year-old Randy White edged out 9-year-old Wesley Boor to claim victory. Sam Darby won the heat race.

Dale Yeaney and Ray Reynolds led a full field of Cypress Clock & Gift Shop Street Stocks to the track for their 20-lap feature event. A couple quick caution flags kept the field close through the first few laps. One of the cautions involved outside pole-sitter Reynolds which then put newcomer Bob Egley into that position. After the couple of caution flags, the race saw its first extended green flag run. On the restart, Yeaney jumped out to the lead over Egley. Yeaney began to pull away from the field as Egley became under attack from Bruce Hartzfeld and Brandon Connor. Within a lap, both Hartzfeld and Connor worked their way around Egley to move into second and third respectively. On lap 5, Hartzfeld had caught and worked his way around Yeaney to take the top spot. Hartzfeld led a handful of laps before a caution for a spin in turn 1 setup another restart. While under caution, Hartzfeld pitted for some kind of a mechanical issue, ending his night. This handed the lead back to Yeaney with Connor and Cregen Brady following behind in second and third respectively. On the ensuing restart, Connor used the high line to his advantage to work his way around Yeaney to take the top spot on lap 12. The race saw only one caution flag in the remaining 8 laps as Connor fended off many challenges from Yeaney as the laps clicked away. Connor held on in the closing laps on his way to picking up his first win of the 2019 season. Yeaney, Brady, Gary Miller Jr., and Reynolds rounded out the top 5. Yeaney and Hartzfeld won the heat races.

Nick Loffredo and Denny Curry led the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair & Service Semi-Late Models trackside for their 20-lap feature race. Loffredo jumped out to the lead on the initial start with Doug Surra and Curry following behind. Surra closed in on Loffredo on lap 2 and challenged him for the top spot. Loffredo fended off the challenge from Surra to hang onto the lead just before the first caution of the race. On the restart, Surra used the bottom lane to his advantage to work around Loffredo to take the lead on lap 3. At the same time, Ed Connor passed Curry to take the third position behind Surra and Loffredo. On lap 4, last week’s winner, Nick Erskine passed Connor for the third spot. Surra continued to lead until the caution flag was displayed for a second time which setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, Surra pulled out to the lead once again. On lap 8, Erskine looked to the inside of Loffredo and passed him to take the second position behind Surra. Surra continued to pace the field as the race reached the halfway mark. Erskine began to close in slightly on Surra but his progress was halted by a third caution flag. On the following restart, Surra jumped out to the lead with Erskine and Loffredo in second and third respectively. A couple late caution flags on the last lap sent the race to overtime but it did not phase Surra as he held on to pick up his first victory of the 2019 season. Erskine, Loffredo, Connor, and Curry rounded out the top 5. Erskine and Curry won the heat races.

Patrick Crawford and Wayne Truitt led the Lockwood Processing Four-Cylinders to the track for their 12-lap feature event. Truitt jumped out to the early lead on the initial start with Crawford and Randy Albert following behind in second and third respectively. On lap 3, Crawford worked his way around Truitt to take the top spot with Curtis Mohney following both of them in third. Truitt was involved in a couple of accidents, ending his night, and moving Mohney and Ricky Nelson into second and third behind Crawford. On the lap 5 restart after the accidents, Daniel Clark passed both Mohney and Nelson to move into the second position. On lap 6, Nelson passed Mohney for the third spot behind Crawford and Clark. Two laps later, on lap 8, Joe Anthony worked his way around Nelson to take the third position. Clark closed in on Crawford in the remaining 4 laps and challenged him for the win. On the final lap, Crawford went wide in turns 3 and 4, opening the door for Clark to move to the bottom and pass him to pick up his first win of the season. Crawford, Anthony, Nelson, and Cory Price rounded out the top 5. Mohney and Clark won the heat races.

Dennis Harrison Jr. and Justin Watt led the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks trackside for their 15-lap feature race. Harrison Jr jumped out to the early lead on the initial green flag with Watt and Jenna Pfaff following behind. On lap 2, both Pfaff and Mike Anderson passed Watt to move into second and third respectively. One lap later, Anderson and Tim Steis both passed Pfaff to move into the second and third positions. A lap or two later, Steis got into the back of Anderson, spinning him. Steis was charged with the caution so he had to restart in the back while Anderson got his second position back. Rich Anderson joined the top 3 in the third position. On the restart, Harrison Jr pulled out to the lead once again as Steis quickly worked his way back into the top 5. A couple caution flags just passed the halfway mark kept the field close. On the restart following the caution flags, Mike Anderson took a look to the inside of Harrison Jr for the lead. Harrison Jr was able to fend off those challenges by Mike Anderson and continue to lead. On lap 12, Steis, who had passed Rich Anderson to take third a few laps earlier, had now passed Mike Anderson to move into second behind Harrison Jr. One lap later, on lap 13, Steis passed Harrison Jr on the high side to take the top spot. Steis went unchallenged the rest of the race on his way to picking up his first checkered flag of the season. However, Steis’ car failed post race tech inspection so the win was then given to Harrison Jr who had finished second. Mike Anderson, Rich Anderson, Watt, and Anthony Schoonover rounded out the top 5. Mike Anderson won the lone heat race.

Johnny Lindenpitz and Larry Hollenbaugh led a full field of BWP Bats Super Late Models to the track for their 25-lap feature event to conclude the evening. Hollenbaugh jumped out to the lead on the initial start with Lindenpitz and Kyle Knapp following behind. On lap 2, Knapp worked his way to the inside of Lindenpitz to take the second position. Two laps later, on lap 4, Knapp passed Hollenbaugh to take the lead. Knapp began to check out on the field. On lap 7, Gale Huey worked his way around Lindenpitz on the inside to move into the third spot behind Knapp and Hollenbaugh. Later that same lap, the first and only caution of the race came out for a spin in turn 2. On the restart, it was Knapp leading Hollenbaugh, Huey, and the rest of the field. A hard-charging Paul Kot passed Huey for the third position on lap 10. Then, on lap 11, Kot passed Hollenbaugh to move into second behind Knapp. On lap 13, Huey passed Hollenbaugh to move back into the third spot. Later, on lap 18, Levi Sikora passed Huey to take third behind Knapp and Kot. Knapp was untouchable in the remaining 7 laps on his way to picking up his first career win in a Super Late Model. Kot, Sikora, Huey, and Hollenbaugh rounded out the top 5. Knapp and Huey won the heat races.
