By John Rittenoure: ADA, Okla. (May 12, 2018) – When it comes to racing at Oklahoma Sports Park the Sellers family seem to have a lock on winning at the 4/10th-mile oval. In 2017 Shane Sellers won two out of three Ameri-Flex OCRS shows held there while dad Robert Sellers won the other one.
Saturday Shane wheeled into victory lane again winning the Ameri-Flex OCRS presented by Grand National Truck and Trailer Harold Leep, Jr. Memorial.
It was the eighth career victory for Sellers and half of them have come at Ada.
“I don’t like saying anything like that, but I will say I like Ada,” Sellers said when asked if he had the winning formula for Oklahoma Sports Park. “I feel comfortable here so I think that helps the result.
“Sometimes you get a decent draw and start towards the front and hit the setup. We race against a lot of good guys and it comes down to who can hit the best setup. I feel like we just had it tonight.”
Sellers started outside the second row in his Courtney Farms, Two-Six Racing Products, David Grace Motorsports Triple X sprinter and chased outside front row starter Gary Owens for the first four laps before taking the lead on lap five.
“I was surprised the car was as good as it was tonight,” Sellers said. “I knew there was probably rubber in three and four and was not sure about one and two. Sometimes you want to find that happy medium. You don’t want to hook it up then can’t turn in the rubber. We just kept the car fairly neutral.
“I felt I was fast and was just trying to bide my time. Once I got out I really did not know I had a lead because I was not pushing it extremely hard.”
Once in the lead Sellers pulled away from the field in his Brand Racing Engines powered sprinter winning by a 1.673-second margin over Alex Sewell. Sewell was able to pass Owens for second on lap seven but could not reel in Sellers. Defending champion Zach Chappell moved up to third followed by Mickey Walker and Sheldon Barksdale to round out the top five. Owens was unable to finish the race after spinning out on lap six.
Barksdale came from 19th starting position to finish fifth which earned him the York Plumbing Hard Charger Award.
