5.13.22 Lernerville Speedway Results
Sarver, PA (May 13, 2022) It was definitely Friday the Thirteenth at Lernerville Speedway as after an absolutely beautiful afternoon, and as the sun was shining, a light rain passed over the speedway just before practice was set to begin. The precipitation did not dampen the spirits of the crowd and track workers were able to have ‘The Action Track’ in tip-top shape after only a short delay. Once cars got on the track the action was hot and heavy for the Fab4 Revved Up with Marburger Farm Dairy which included the Zimmer’s Service Center United Late Model Series (ULMS) who were competing in the $3,500 to-win ‘Willie and Conda McConnell Memorial’.
The ‘McConnell Memorial’ for the ULMS/Precise Racing Products Late Models went green with 2021 Lernerville Speedway track champion Colton Flinner jumping out to the early lead over former national late model star Chub Frank. Flinner and Frank battled for the top spot until a caution flew on lap three for the stopped car of ninth starting Andrew Wylie in turn four. Frank gained the advantage over Flinner as the race resumed but another quick caution on lap five for the spun cars of Ron Hall and Matt Lux slowed the pace again. On the ensuing restart, Frank continued to lead with Dave Hess bypassing Flinner for the runner-up spot as Jared Miley also pounced on Flinner for the third spot. On lap 7, Hess made his move around Frank to capture the lead while eighth starting and current ULMS points leader, Gregg Satterlee made his way into the top-five and around Flinner for the fourth spot on lap 10. Satterlee looked to be on a mission and was glued to the bottom of turns one and two. By lap 13, Satterlee had caught Miley for the third spot and the two battled side-by-side until lap 19 when Satterlee finally cleared Miley for good and set his sights on Frank for second. Satterlee continued to use the bottom side momentum out of turn two to make gains and drove under Frank on lap 21 to take over the second position. With race leader Hess riding the high side, Satterlee’s line was wide open, and he took full advantage as he was able to clear Hess on lap 26 of the 30-lapper and go on to claim the $3,500 top prize as well as a guaranteed spot in the ‘Big River Steel Firecracker 100’ set for the end of June. Hess finished second followed by Frank, Miley, and Wyatt Scott in fifth.
‘I almost forgot how to get up to the Victory Lane stage here,’ Satterlee said in Terry Bowser Excavating Victory Lane about his limited appearances at Lernerville in recent years. ‘I definitely forgot how awesome this place is when it’s right, I hope that was a good race for all the fans, that was fun! I buried myself in the pill draw pulling the eight (starting position), but I knew we had a good car and I just needed to be patient and pick the cars off when I could.’ Satterlee continued, ‘The restarts really helped me find that bottom groove and I knew if I could get up in the infield enough, I could maintain with those guys on the top. It was kind of treacherous up there so I was hoping they would make some mistakes and bobble and take be there to take advantage when they did. Happy to get the win, we’ve had a really good car this year, it’s been a lot of fun.’
J.R. McGinley and Dave Murdick brought the Diehl Automotive Big Block Modifieds to the green flag with Murdick taking the early lead. After a quick lap two caution, Murdick continued to lead as Brian Swartzlander, who started 13th, found his way to the fourth spot by lap 3 and into the third position by lap 6. Murdick had stretched his lead out to almost three seconds over the second-place battle between Colton Walters and Garrett Krummert while Krummert disposed of Walters for the second spot. Krummert then set his sights on the leader, who was now into lapped traffic, and began to quickly close the gap. On lap 19, Krummert had Murdick in his crosshairs and pounced on the race long leader to take the lead coming out of turn two. The lead was short-lived though as disaster struck for Krummert when he jumped the cushion in turn three which sent his car up and over to bring out the red flag and dash his hopes taking home the checkered flag. When racing resumed, Murdick maintained control in the closing laps and picked up his 32nd career Lernerville Speedway win. Swartzlander came home second with Brad Rapp in third followed by Jeremiah Shingledecker in fourth and Colton Walters in fifth.
‘It feels great,’ Murdick said in Victory Lane. ‘I hate to win because Garrett (Krummert) rolled over, I knew he was coming and I was trying to ‘baby’ the car because I thought we were getting tight, the restart (after the red flag) gave me a chance to adjust it. It could have been interesting (if Krummert stayed in the race) because I feel like I could have pulled another gear even though he got around me. But I don’t want to beat him that way.’
Brandon Matus and Jason Shultz led the Peoples Natural Gas Sprint Cars through the Sprankles Start Zone and to the green flag with Matus taking the early advantage with third starting Dan Shetler gaining the second spot. Matus remained in control while Shetler and Shultz continuously battled back-and-forth for the second spot until lap 15 when fifth starting Sye Lynch joined the fray for the second spot. On lap 16, Lynch made his way past both Shetler and Shultz to take over the second spot and began his assault on race leader Matus. Just one circuit later, Lynch made his move on the race leader on the bottom of turn two to make the pass. Matus tried to stay with Lynch in turns three and four, but Lynch was too strong on the bottom and pulled away from the field. Lynch stretched his lead out and went on to claim his first Lernerville win of the 2022 season by 3.267 seconds over A.J. Flick who made a late race charge, Shetler finished third with Matus falling to fourth while Shultz rounded out the top-five.
Lynch was joined in Terry Bowser Excavating Victory Lane by Track Announcer Eric Westendorf who asked, ‘You were comfortably in fourth, where did you come from!? Lynch answered ‘Yeah, Shetler and Shultz had a really great race going on there (for second position) and they were racing side-by-side and Shetler was able to make the middle (groove) work way better than I anticipated and I couldn’t see Brandon (Matus), I knew I just had to pick them off one and a time.’ Sye continued, ‘We had a really good car, hats off to my guys, we’ve been trying a lot of stuff (setups) and we struggled the first couple weeks here but man we had speed all night long and the car felt great.’
After a lap one caution, second place starter Chris Schneider took early control of the Millerstown Pic-A-Part Pro Stocks feature event with fourth starting Curtis Bish in tow in second. The top three of Schneider, Bish, and pole-sitter Brandon Dolund had separated themselves from the field until a lap 8 caution slowed the pace and packed the field back together. As the race resumed, Schneider and Bish again distanced themselves from the pack with Schneider holding a steady advantage. Another caution flew on lap 13 to again tighten the field. Schneider, who had been getting remarkable restarts after each caution, left the door open for Bish this time as the two went into turns one and two door handle to door handle with Bish gaining back stretch momentum from the high-side. As the leaders entered turns three and four, Bish powered his way into turn three and performed a perfect slide job on Schneider to take the lead on lap 14. Bish gapped the field and went on to lead the final six laps to claim the victory. Schneider finished second with 20th starting Todd Wheldon finishing third, Tyler Dietz finished fourth from his 16th starting spot while 10th starting Joe Stajnrajh came home fifth.
‘I’d like to dedicate this race tonight to a local fellow we lost back home, he’s a long-time supporter of dirt track racing, Mr. Bob Sutley, he’s a good dude,’ Bish said in Victory Lane. ‘I also want to congratulate Chris (Schneider), he’s a true, class-act racer. He came right over and congratulated me, this is what it’s all about, friendships and fun.’ Bish continued. ‘I was just trying to capitalize on any restart I could because Chris was so good. I knew if I could get ahead of him, I could probably, maybe, keep him there by using up as much racetrack as possible.’
