5.18.24 Land of Legends Raceway Results

Canandaigua, NY – May 18, 2024 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR

The winged machines were back in town on Saturday and this time a tour record 38 teams signed in at Land Of Legends Raceway for the second event in the 2024 A-Verdi Storage Containers CRSA Sprint Car Series powered by SuperGen Products.

The MighTea Boba 305 Sprint Car showdown also kicked off the 3-race DisBatch Brewing Company Challenge Series which provided a perfect setting for weekly regular Matt Rotz to capture his first career A-Main at the hallowed Ontario County Fairgrounds half-miler.

With a total of 119 entries in six divisions packing the pits, joining Rotz in victory lane for the Doug Dulen Memorial program presented by Hoselton Auto Mall were Alex Payne (Pepsi Big-Block Modified), Kevin Ridley (Stirling Lubricants Sportsman), Jimmy Grant (Eldredge & Sons Scrap Recycling Street Stock) and Marc Minutolo (Lloyd’s Contracting Hobby Stock) while Justin Sick and Tyler Foster split a twin-bill for Maguire Ford of Canandaigua New Legends Sportsman campaigners.

The wins for early season point-leaders Payne and Grant matched their opening night success found two weeks earlier while Sick and Foster collected their first-ever checkered flags in Canandaigua. Both Ridley and Minutolo rank second all-time in the LOLR recordbook, with Ridley notching open-wheel win #33 and Minutolo scoring his 68th feature race victory in stock car competition.

The Ontario County Humane Society Happy Tails Animal Shelter was the Beneficiary of the weekly 50/50 drawing, with over $800 collected throughout the evening and distributed trackside during victory lane ceremonies.

The long-time proprietor of Honeoye (NY) Auto Parts, Dulen passed away on Dec. 7, 2023 at age 72. An avid supporter of speedway activity dating back to 1988, over the past five decades he remained a perennial sponsor of numerous drivers competing at the fairgrounds where HAP continues to present annual race events.

The all-star array of racers once carrying Honeoye Auto Parts colors includes both full-fender and open-wheel pilots highlighted by Modified winners Alan and Danny Johnson, Gary Tomkins and Steve Schultz, who won the first Big-Block feature for the Dulen clan. Alan captured the televised Super DIRTcar Series race at Canandaigua in 1996 sporting the HAP moniker while younger brother Danny was crowned Mr. DIRT 358-Mod champ in both 2010 & ’11 boasting company backing. Tomkins earned the overall Mr. DIRT Big-Block title with Dulen aboard in 2004.

Among many more, Honeoye Auto Parts also adorned the 305 Sprinter of Nick Cooper, Sportsman rides of Rob Bussey, Lance Dusett and Matt Sheppard as well as Street Stockers George Bullis, Ron White, James Henry, Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell Jr. and Mike Cooper, still the only driver with Honeoye Auto Parts sponsorship to take home a checkered flag on a Honeoye Auto Parts-sponsored night at LOLR!

With 2024 marking the 36th year of conducting business for Honeoye Auto Parts, the list of current drivers enjoying company support is headed by Justin Haers, Zach Payne, Daniel Johnson Jr., Tim Baker, Loren Lincoln and Marc Minutolo. Haers (2021-23), Minutolo (2023) and Bullis (1993) also earned season point titles flying the HAP banner during their tenure in Canandaigua.

Despite springtime precipitation that continued throughout the week across the Finger Lakes region, Canandaigua’s track crew prepared a fast racing surface with Rotz taking full advantage from the opening green flag, leading the entire 20-lap distance from his front row start.

“Feels great, feels like I’ve been working towards this all my life and finally achieved it,” beamed Rotz, 19, after the Hopewell hotshoe staved off a late-race rally from opening day winner Bobby Parrow to garner the memorable victory. “Have to thank everybody that helps out on this car. Its a lot to put together a team and all these people came together to see me race.”

“Definitely the longest final lap of my life. Felt like the most stressful moment I’ve ever had because I was constantly looking over my shoulder saying ‘where’s Bobby, where’s Bobby,’ I know he’s coming. Then I got to the flagstand, saw him come to me and thought thank God,” noted Rotz, after becoming the 32nd winner in 170 305 events run at LOLR since the class debut in 2012.

After pulling away from pole-sitter Alysha Bay at the start, Rotz maintained a steady margin steering his black #77 Pickering Farms Quality Beef-Prouty’s Bar-Fratto Curbing/Eagle mount. Filing in sixth on the 26-car grid, Ethan Gray carved his way to the front, grabbing second from Bay as heavy traffic tightened the field by the midway point. Most recent LOLR winner Dalton Herrick slowed off the pace to incur the first caution period on lap 15 and under yellow Gray suddenly stopped before retiring pitside for good returning the runner-up slot to Bay.

Ensuing cautions on laps 16 and 19 continued to bunch the frontrunners, with eighth starting Parrow picking off Jeff Trombley for third on lap 17 then overtaking Bay for second on lap 18. When Kyle Pierce rolled his sprinter through turn one to force out a rare red flag, a second lap 19 restart proved pivotal enabling Rotz to ultimately hold off Parrow by a half car-length and snare the dramatic $1,000 victory.

“Right before the last caution I saw (Parrow) get under me and I was like ‘oh crap’ I gotta change something up,” figured fifth-year racer Rotz, after emerging as the 78th winner in 284 CRSA events staged since 2006 and the 11th different driver to score a 305 tour win at LOLR in 20 A-Mains. “So after that restart I went low where he was gonna go and it just worked.”

“When I saw that he passed me on the bottom the previous restart, I gotta go down there, either block him or go faster. So I waited and thank God the yellow came out, went down there and blocked him off,” added Rotz, who finished third in points last season at LOLR with three top-5 finishes tallied in 11 main events.

Parrow shadowed Rotz across the line by a mere 0.102-sec with Bay hanging on for third ahead of three-time LOLR CRSA winner Jeff Trombley and Honeoye Auto Parts ‘Hard Charger’ of the race Tomy Moreau (started 18th) who gained 13 spots.

CRSA returns to action at Weedsport Speedway on Sunday to launch the I-90 Pit Stop Challenge. Round two of the DisBatch Brewing Company CRSA mini-series in Canandaigua covers the July 4 holiday with the third leg filling out the LOLR season-finale on Sept. 28. Luck of the draw put Payne on the pole to lead off the 30-lap Modified main yet after that it was all skill and talent and a mighty Billy The Kid motor for Alex as his #70A Nardozzi Paving & Construction-Batzel’s Auto-Bilstein Shocks/Bicknell produced another flawless performance, outlasting multi-time track champions Erick Rudolph and Matt Sheppard to take home the top prize.

“What an incredible race,” remarked Payne, who was greeted in victory lane by Honeoye Auto Parts owner Doug Dulen Jr. to present the $3,000 winner’s check. The Dulen Family and their store suppliers teamed up to bolster the night’s Big-Block purse that offered $450 just to start. “When you got those two guys behind you everything you can possibly think of is going through your head. But (my team) works so hard every week its starting to show now.”

Payne finished second to Rudolph in his heat yet selected #1 in the pre-race re-draw among the top-3 qualifiers in the three preliminary events. With the heat race distance extended to 9 laps in tribute to the late Bob McCreadie, winners Rudolph picked #5 and Sheppard #9 to help set the 22-car feature race starting field.

At the midway mark it was Payne comfortably out front with Rudolph and Sheppard the next closest behind as still half the race remained to challenge. A second and final yellow flag flew on lap 28 for the slowing car of Torrey Stoughtenger but that was still not enough as the third-generation pilot from Hopewell cruised home for a five car-length victory and his second win in two starts to open the ’24 race season.

“I knew that I was having some decent restarts there. Figured if I was patient and fired when I felt it was the right time, pretty much just get into turn one, thought I was good after that,” stated Payne, who logged his first win in 15 races last season to place seventh on the final LOLR Big-Block points chart. “Wasn’t actually driving into turn one that hard, probably looked a little harder than it was. The first lap for sure but after that you kinda back off a little bit.”

“Still, to do this (win) again is just incredible. Said before I was very proud to be on the opening day’s winners list here with a guy like Bob McCreadie. And I have to thank the Dulen Family for this event, it means a lot being able to honor Doug,” added Payne, after continuing to rekindle the youth movement on this night.

Rudolph and Sheppard settled for top-three finishes with all-time Canandaigua winner Alan Johnson and younger brother Danny Johnson completing the final front-five. In memory of McCreadie, Payne also collected Lap 9 leader bonuses of $250 (from Stu & Matt Sheppard) and $100 (Mosley Family) while Gil Tegg Jr. was awarded a $100 Gift Certificate from ImageX as the 9th-Place runner on Lap 9.

In contrast to the rather uncontested flag-to-flag run authored by Payne, veteran Ridley needed nearly all 25 laps to register a narrow win in the Sportsman finale.

“If that (race) wasn’t exciting I don’t know what is!” exclaimed Ridley, 46, after edging near race-long leader Tyler Corcoran by 0.152-sec. to secure the come-from-behind victory. “I tell you I’m flat worn out. It was 25 laps of holding it to the floor, bouncing through the holes and just getting what I could. Drove 10 hours just to get here, gotta make it worth it.”

The Waterloo native now making his home in North Carolina and employed as a crew chief for Tony Stewart’s Superstar Racing Experience (SRX), Ridley advanced from ninth to sixth on the initial circuit and navigated around the tricky tract using his three decades of fairgrounds familiarity to the fullest. When Mark Potter broke exiting the second corner and looped down the back stretch, Ridley held third and in search for more on the lap 11 restart.

Ridley dove low in turn two to overtake runner-up Nick Root on lap 14 and pulled up to Corcoran’s bumper for a final restart with three to go. With Ridley riding high and Corcoran sticking low, the lead duo crossed the line even on lap 22 before the winning 20x Fred’s Fab’N Fold-ImageX Graphics/Bicknell machine led by a yard the next time around under chief starter Scott Hixson’s white flag.

“These guys here got it figured out, they race all the time so we’re happy to get it done tonight,” downplayed Ridley, a two-time LOLR points champion who trails only Paul Guererri (45) on Canandaigua’s all-time Sportsman win list. “Their carburetors are on point and they spend money. We race 4-5 times a year, come out and do what we can and try not to spend a whole ton of money. Will be back next week, maybe run every other week, or maybe even try to get here every week depending on how things turn out. Ten hours is always a long drive.”

Two-time defending points champion and current leader Zach Sobotka, who earlier finished 8th in his 305 Sprint debut teamed with Blake Warner (9th), placed third ahead of Root, Matt Guererri and Kasey Coffey, who improved from 17th to earn the Honeoye Auto Parts ‘Hard Charger’ of the race award funded by the Dulen Family.

Looking to surpass a career-high total of 11 feature wins scored last year at LOLR, Grant is right on course after notching his second 20-lap triumph in as many starts this month. Chasing front row partner C.J. Guererri the first half of the race, the Penn Yan pilot forged the final lead change on lap 11 and never looked back en route to win #24 at the legendary fairgrounds oval.

“I tell you, this (engine) is junk. Its 285 degrees right now and I was gonna put the rods right through the side of the block to win that one,” declared Grant, posing in the winner’s circle as steam continued to billow out from under the hood of his notorious no. 36 Fratto Curbing-Washburn Excavating Chevrolet Camaro. “Was trying to keep the air pushing through but its so hot right now. Its gotta come out and come apart, but we got another one. I’ve got the best engine builder in the business and Paul Gavenda will have this thing fixed by Wednesday.”

Grant and Guererri duked it out from the get-go before the lone exchange up front came as the lead pair traded paint between turns one and two. All-time LOLR full-fender winner Mike Welch battled for third with Jared Hill before wrestling away second from Guererri with less than a handful of laps to go.

Despite a yellow flag unfurled on the final circuit, Grant still won by a half-dozen car-lengths ahead of Honeoye Auto Parts ‘Hard Charger’ of the race Welch. Guererri finished third followed by Hill, first-year regular Chris Woodard and veteran Pat Hobbs.

“Was a hammer down race track and I knew I had to keep (Guererri) within my grasp or he would check out,” stated Grant, with a second straight track crown clearly in sight at his Saturday night hangout. “I got a run coming out of turn four and knew if I could beat him to the bottom in one I could slide him. And it worked. Don’t know what the gap was at the end but I was praying ‘please don’t blow up.’ Running 285 degrees this thing still didn’t miss a beat.”

Without leading a single circuit in the Hobby Stock feature, Minutolo still went home with the first-place trophy. After pacing the 17-car field for all but one time around in the 15-lap feature, Daniel Kerrick was disqualified after a “trailing arm” infraction was determined in the customary post-race inspection to drop him to last on the final scoresheet.

“This isn’t how I like to get my wins that’s for sure, but it is what it is,” said Minutolo, 32, the defending division points champion after the Newark driver registered his all-time LOLR high 58th pure stock win; 10 more came in Street Stock competition. Danny will make his changes and come back just as strong as the week before and I’m sure we’ll continue to put on great races.”

After Kevin Lloyd’s mount came to halt on the back chute with just one lap in the books, Kerrick went high around pole-winner Tyler Burnell back under green and never flinched. Four more cautions later it was Kerrick seemingly with a command performance atop the heap with Minutolo edging Honeoye Auto Parts ‘Hard Charger’ Nate Peckham for what appeared to be a second-place finish. Instead, the penalty for Kerrick advanced James Werner to third with Frank ‘Bubba’ Burnell and Justin Jacoby rounding out the revised top-5.

“Tough race, started fifth and worked our way to third quick and thought we’d have a good car to battle for the win,” commented Minutolo, whose familiar black 25B Honeoye Auto-Real Estate By Jenn-Tradition Automotive Chevrolet Monte Carlo only nipped Peckham by 0.112-sec. in the final rundown. “Tyler and Danny were good but Tyler had an issue and we were a 2nd-place car. Nate and Justin (Eldredge) might have been a little faster but we were able to hold track position and hang on for dear life.”

The make-up 12-lap Sportsman Legends race from May 4 was in the hands of Kyle Ridley until contact from behind with race-long runner-up Chase Spoor entering the last corner the last time around knocked out both leaders. Nick Galusha was first in line to take down his own first career win yet on a final lap restart Sick stormed by out of turn four en route to another epic finish at the popular fairgrounds facility.

“Crazy with the yellow coming out on the last lap,” summed up Sick, crewman of Sportsman driver Tim Lafler after the Naples driver posted the team’s first win wheeling the #51J Lafler Construction-Ironman Equipment-Gruschow Fab & Weld/Bicknell entry. “In those final corners I saw an opening and just sent it.”

In the caution-free 12-lap nightcap hitting the track minutes before the 11pm curfew and needing just 4-1/2 minutes to complete, Foster was able to lead from the drop of the green with both Spoor and Ridley still looking for their first win in 2024.

“In the first feature we broke a shock bracket or maybe a mount, drove the whole race without a left-rear shock,” divulged Foster, after the Western New York invader from Pendleton parked his #53 A+ Performance Cycle-John’s Motorshop & Transmission-Bud’s Apple Pie/Bicknell car in victory lane for the first time. “Was counting down the laps in my head at the end, been close before so tonight we finally got it done.”

McCREADIE REMEMBERED
While Saturday’s show in Canandaigua paid tribute to the late Doug Dulen, a moment of silence was also taken out of respect for long-time Land of Legends competitor “Barefoot” Bob McCreadie. The Watertown NY racer passed away May 15 after a lengthy illness at the age of 74.

Of the more than 500 victories claimed at 56 speedways in six states, two Canadian provinces and Australia, he has the most —99, including 15 in 1994— at the Canandaigua fairgrounds where the 1986 Syracuse Super DIRT Week champion also owns six Big-Block season point titles.

Among LOLR’s inaugural Wall of Fame selections in 2018, McCreadie was inducted into the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame (2006) and Eastern Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame (2007), and was enshrined on the Lowe’s Motor Speedway (NC) Walk of Fame in 2003.
