It was a warm late-spring evening at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile on Saturday night, and despite a crash taking out two light poles, fans were treated to an amazing night of racing and family entertainment. PPMS would have six divisions with the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series making their first appearance of the season at the “Monster.” PPMS would also see ten heat races, six feature events, and one first-time feature winner.
Justin Shea (14S), from Sharpsville, would pick up his first win of the season at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway for the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series. The “Midway Missile” Daryl Charlier (114) would lead all 20 laps in the RUSH Late Model Dirt Series feature, picking up his first win of the season at PPMS. Chris Schneider (55), from Lower Burell, would bring home the win for the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, while Frank Magill (05), from Jefferson Hills, was able to hold off Cody Koteles (1K), from Stockdale, to snag his first win of the season for the Hobby Stock division. Matt Kiesel (3K) would pick up his first career win for the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and Logan Koteles (5K), from Stockdale, would make a last-lap pass to pick up another win for the All Ways Safe Young Guns division.
12 cars were entered for the RUSH Sportsman Modified Dirt Series. They were broken up into two heats with the top three from each heat making the redraw. Chas Wolbert (C3), from Howland, Ohio, would start on the pole in the 15-lap feature with Tony Tatgenhorst (63T), from Columbiana, Ohio, starting to his outside in second place. The duo would bring the field to the green flag and Wolbert (C3) would pull away with the early lead with Tatgenhorst (63T) in second, and Shea (14S) in third. On lap five, and with Wolbert (C3) still leading, Shea (14S) would steal the second-place spot from Tatgenhorst (63T). Then on the next lap, Shea (14S) would take over the lead with Wolbert (C3) now running in second and Tatgenhorst (63T) in third. The top three would remain the same for the rest of the race with Shea (14S) picking up his first win of the season for the division and his first win at PPMS since 2017. Following him to the line was Wolbert (C3) in second, Tatgenhorst (C3) in third, Jordan Ehrenberg (JD57) in fourth, Ben Easler (02) in fifth, Kole Holden (2) in sixth, Brandon Ritchey (1R) in seventh, Chelsea Kreigisch (10) in eighth, Calvin Clay (12) in ninth, Greg Porter (25) in tenth, and Cole Edwards (29) would round out the 11-car field, as Jacob Jordan (28J) was a DNS. The heat race winners were Wolbert (C3) and Shea (14S).
The Rohrich Automotive RUSH Late Model Dirt Series had 16 cars signed in and they were broken into two heat races. The top four from each heat would make the redraw for the 20-lap feature. Charlier (114) would draw the pole position with Cole Petrelle (184P), from Follansbee, West Virginia, starting to his outside in second place. Colby Beighey (36), from Taylor, Michigan, would start in third, and Zach Morrow (48), from Gibsonia, would complete the top two starting rows. When the green flag dropped, Charlier (114) would take off with the early lead but a caution would slow the pace before the field could complete the first lap. A complete restart would ensue and again, Charlier (114) would pull away with an early lead when the field came under green-flag conditions. By lap two, Charlier (114) already had half of a straightaway lead. Another caution would come on lap three for debris in turn two. Charlier (114) would choose the high-side on the restart with Petrelle (184P) in second, Morrow (48) in third, Tommy Schirnhofer Jr. (8S) in fourth, and Zach Gunn (14G) in fifth. Charlier (114) would again keep his lead over the field with Morrow (48) now in second, and Petrelle (184P) falling back to third. Charlier (114) was on a rail and by lap 10, he had a full straightaway lead. Lap 11 would bring another caution for a car that spun out in turn two. Again, Charlier (114) would take the outside on the restart and he would begin to pull away from the field once the green flag waved. With Charlier (114) still leading and Morrow (48) still in second, Petrelle (184P) would fall out of the top five around lap 14. Petrelle (184P) would fall off the pace on lap 18 bringing out another caution. With two laps to go, Charlier (114) would again take the outside on the restart and despite an excellent restart by Morrow (48), Charlier would solidify the deal, as he led all 20 laps of the event to pick up his first RUSH Late Model Dirt Series win of the season. He was followed to the line by Morrow (48) in second, Schirnhofer Jr. (8S) in third, Z. Gunn (14G) in fourth, Zach Gunn (17G) in fifth, Noah Brunell (31) in sixth, Tony White (27T) in seventh, Bill Kessler (09) in eighth, Joe Squatriglia (15X) in ninth, and last week’s winner and points leader, Dan Lepro (2L) in tenth. The heat race winners were Morrow (48) and Z. Gunn (17G).
The ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stocks had nine cars entered with one heat race. The top four from the heat race would enter the redraw to determine the top four starting spots in their 15-lap feature event. Noah Brunell (18), from New Alexandria, would draw the pole position, as he was driving for Mike Harris. Schneider (55) would start to Noah’s outside in second place with Rocky Kugel (00), from East Liverpool, Ohio, starting in third, and Nick Kocuba (10), from Burgettstown, completing the top two starting rows. When the green flag dropped, Schneider (55) would take off with the early lead with Brunell (18) in second, Kugel (00) in third, and Kocuba (10) in fourth. These top four would remain the same through lap nine, as Schneider (55) would continue to increase his half of a straightaway lead over the field. With Schneider (55) still leading, a battle for second place was taking place behind him between Brunell (18) and Kugel (00). Brunell (18) would hold off Kugel (00) to retain second place, as Schneider (55) continued to lead the field. Schneider (55) would lead all laps of the event as it went green to checkered, and was the only feature without a caution flag. Schneider (55) would pick up his first ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stock win of the season at PPMS. Following him to the line was Brunell (18) in second, Kugel (00) in third, Kocuba (10) in fourth, Brian Hutchko (60H) in fifth, Brett McDonald (25) in sixth, Pete Loria (11C) in seventh, and Mike Anderson (71) would round out the eight-car field, as Jordan Perkins (13J) was a DNS. The heat race winner was Kocuba (10).
The Hobby Stocks have quickly become one of the biggest classes at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile and they certainly did not disappoint on Saturday night with 24 cars signed in. They were broken into three heat races with the top four from each heat making the redraw for their 12-lap feature. Tony Magill (5), from Jefferson Hills, would draw the pole position with Adam Ferree (29), also from Jefferson Hills, starting to his outside in second place. Frank Magill (05), also from Jefferson Hills, would start in third, and Karlee Kovacs (221K) from Carnegie, would start in fourth. When the green flag waved, T. Magill (5), Ferree (29), and F. Magill (05) were in a three-way battle for the lead but a caution would slow the pace on lap two. T. Magill (5) would choose the inside on the restart with his brother F. Magill (05) to his outside in second, and Ferree (29) in third. When the field returned to green flag conditions, F. Magill (05) would take over the lead. Lap four had F. Magill (05) still leading, T. Magill (5) in second, and eleventh-starting Cody Koteles (1K) already up to third. Another caution would come on lap four when a car had trouble in turn two. F. Magill (05) would lead the restart and would keep his lead when the green light turned on. With F. Magill (05) still leading the field, C. Koteles (1K) and T. Magill (5) would battle for second place with C. Koteles (1K) taking over second place on lap nine. Another caution would come on the same lap for another car that had trouble in turn two. F. Magill (05) would again choose the outside on the restart and would keep his lead over the field. Two more laps would be completed before the next caution for Ferree (29) would spin out in turn two. With F. Magill (05) and C. Koteles (1K) leading the restart, a lap wouldn’t be completed until the caution was out again for T. Magill (5) who had a flat tire and got into the wall between turns three and four. A complete restart would ensue minus T. Magill (5) who headed for the pits to have his tire changed. Again, a lap wouldn’t be completed before the caution was back out for a car that had trouble in turn two, which kept T. Magill (5) on the lead lap after having his tire changed in the pits. F. Magill (05) and C. Koteles (1K) would again lead the restart with four laps remaining in the event, but yet again, a lap wouldn’t be completed before another caution flag. F. Magill (05) was warned over the raceceiver for starting early on the restarts as he led the field back to green-flag conditions. F. Magill (05) would keep his lead with C. Koteles (1K) in second, and Kovacs (221K) in third. Despite a valiant effort by C. Koteles (1K), F. Magill (05) was able to hold on and pick up his first PPMS Hobby Stock win of the season. He was followed to the line by C. Koteles (1K) in second, Kovacs (221K) in third, John Cain (06) in fourth, twenty second-starting Ben Anton (13) in fifth, Jonathan Koteles (2K) in sixth, Ferree (29) in seventh, T. Magill (5) in eighth, Jacob Wiser (OU2) in ninth, and Tom Anton (64) completed the top 10. The heat race winners were Ferree (29), C. Koteles (1K), and T. Magill (5).

For the 12-lap feature, John Gill (19G) from Burgettstown would start on the pole. To his outside and starting in second was Lucas Weaver (11W). Matt Kiesel (3K) would start in third, while Noah Bubeck (2B) would start in fourth. When the green flag dropped, Gill (19G) would pull away with the early lead. Lap four had Gill (19G) still leading, Kiesel (3K) in second, Bubeck (2B) in third, and Chris Knight (78) in fourth. That order would remain the same through lap eight and then the event’s first and only caution would come on lap 10 when a car hit the wall and spun in turn four. Gill (19G) would choose the outside on the restart with Kiesel (3K) to his inside in second place. When the green flag waved, Gill (19G) had what looked to be a power issue with his car as it fell on it’s face and he was forced to enter the pits which paved the way for Kiesel (3K) who took over the lead with two laps to go. Kiesel (3K) would lead the remaining two laps of the event, picking up his first career Crawford Auto Repair Four-Cylinder victory. Following him to the line was Chris Knight (78) in second, Matt Knight (71) in third, Eric Reynolds (53) in fourth, Craig Rudolph (5R) in fifth, Gill (19G) in sixth, Bubeck (2B) in seventh, Travis Corbin (42) in eighth, Weaver (11W) in ninth, and Bill Tennant (2) in tenth. The heat race winners were Tennant (2) and Bubeck (2B).
The All Ways Safe Young Guns would have six cars entered and at least one first-time driver. Without a heat race and redraw, their pill draw would determine their starting positions in the six-lap feature. Kiersten Chernik (5X) would draw the first starting spot and start on the pole. Gavin Kokolis (91) would start in second while Cameron Hollister (44) would start in third, Emmerson Laboon (14) would start in fourth, and last week’s winner, Logan Koteles (5K) would complete the five-car field, as Cameron Lambert (223) was a DNS. When the green flag waved, Hollister (44) would come from his third starting spot to take the lead. Lap three had Hollister (44) still in the lead, L. Koteles (5K) in second, Chernik (5X) in third, Kokolis (91) in fourth, and Laboon (14) in fifth. This order would remain the same through lap four and with two laps remaining, a caution would slow the pace. Hollister (44) would lead the restart and would keep his lead when the field returned to green-flag conditions. On the last lap, L. Koteles (5K) started to make his move for the lead as he and Hollister (44) entered turn three. L. Koteles (5K) would pass Hollister (44) for his second win in a row as they came out of turn four. Hollister (44) would finish in second, Chernik (5X) in third, Kokolis (91) in fourth, and Laboon (14) in fifth.
Racing resumes at Dirt’s Monster Half-Mile this coming Saturday, May 29, 2021, as the Falconi’s Moon Township Automotive Outlaw 410 Sprint Car Series makes their first appearance of the season. The Outlaw 410 Sprint Cars are the fastest cars on dirt and often reach speeds of 150 MPH at the Monster Half-Mile. PPMS will also be featuring the Rohrich Automotive RUSH Late Model Dirt Series, the ADMAR Penn Ohio Pro Stocks, as they warm-up for the 10th Annual Ed Laboon Memorial, the Crawford Auto Repair Four Cylinders, and the All Ways Safe Young Guns.
