5.22.21 Stateline Speedway Results
Busti, NY (May 22, 2021): Blue skies and temperatures in the 80s greeted fans entering Stateline Speedway for the third event of 2021. With racing done in all six divisions present before 11:00 PM. Victors for the evening were Dave Hess in both the Super Late Models and the UMP Modifieds, Steve Dixon in the RUSH Late Models, John Boardman in Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks, Greg Johnson in the RUSH Pro Mod, and Chris Horton, who won his second Challenger feature in a row.
The RUSH Pro-Mods were the first feature on the track with Greg Johnson and Brian Mohawk on the front row. The field only made it to turn three before caution flew when third-starting Jarrod Silvis spun in front of the rest of the pack. That resulted in Ryan Howard, points leader Dennis Lunger, Brodie Hill, and Scott Gurdak all stopped on the track. Cody Stronghart was in the mess as well but did not stop, therefore was not charged in the caution. A complete restart was needed as cars had not completed a lap. When lap one was finally complete it was Greg Johnson leading the way over Mohawk, Carl Irons, Chad Ramsey, and Adam Ashcroft. Another yellow appeared at lap one when Hill and Silvis spun, again in turns three and four. When the field had completed two laps it was Johnson leading Mohawk, Ashcroft, Vaughn Nystrom, and Al Brewer. Ashcroft was second at three laps with Brewer up to third over Mohawk and Michael Eschrich. Eschrich came to fourth at lap nine with Irons now fifth. Chad Ramsey spun at turn four on lap nine. After green again was over the field it was Johnson leading at halfway over Ashcroft, Brewer, Eschrich, and Irons. At the halfway point Hill spun again, his third charged caution, therefore sent to the pit. Tyler Oakes spun at turn four at lap twelve. Irons got by Brewer at lap fifteen for third with Lunger getting to fifth. Another caution came at lap seventeen when Stronghart and Oakes spun. The final caution came at lap eighteen for a minor spin, but the time limit had been reached and the event was declared complete. Johnson got the win over Ashcroft, Eschrich, Irons (penalized one position for passing before the cone), and Lunger.
Next up were the RUSH Late Models with Steve Dixon, with a rare appearance at Stateline, and Brian Larson on the front row. The first caution appeared almost immediately when Rodney Houser spun in turn one. He then went pit side with apparent ails. At lap one Dixon was leading former champions Jason Genco and Darrell Bossard with Larson back to fourth and another former champion, Scott Gurdak, fifth. Dixon and Genco were near-even on the backstraight but it was Genco at the line when lap three completed. Dixon shot back to the lead over Genco in turn two on lap four with Bossard, Jason Black, and Larson filling out the top five. D. J Krug and Lonnie Waldron spun in turn two for the next caution. At lap seven Dixon and Bossard were even at the line with Dixon again leading at lap eight when Darrin Waldron spun in turn four. On green Lonnie Waldron spun into the front straight wall, then headed pit side. David Parker got to fourth at lap nine. Halfway saw Dixon leading Bossard, Gurdak, Parker, and Genco. Genco was fourth at lap eleven. At the checkers it was Dixon over Bossard, Gurdak, Genco, and Parker.
Next up were the UMP Modifieds with Troy Johnson and Braidy Westfall at the front for the green flag. Johnson led lap one over Justin Carlson, Dave Hess, Westfall, and last week’s winner and current points leader Michael McGee. Coming through turn two at lap two it was a three-way fight for the lead among Westfall, Cale Crocker, and Lunger with Johnson leading Carlson, Dave Hess, McGee, and Lunger at the line. Yellow flew at lap three when Deven Dudenhoeffer spun in turn four. At four laps Hess was now the leader over Johnson, Lunger, Carlson, and McGee. Carlson and Lunger were near-even at the line at lap five for third with Lunger securing the spot by lap seven. On lap eight Lunger spun sideways on the back straight, ending up stopped in turn three. After green it was Hess leading Johnson, McGee, Carlson, and Cale Crocker at the end of lap eight. The halfway point had Hess opening his lead over a side-by-side race for second between Johnson and McGee, Carlson, and Crocker. McGee got to second at lap eleven when the race was slowed again for another spin by Dudenhoeffer in turn two. One more lap of green and it was Mitchell Rex spinning in turn four. With five laps left it was Zach Johnson spinning in turn two. At the checkers it was Hess, McGee, Johnson, Carlson, and Crocker.
The premier class at Stateline, the Super Late Models, were next with David Scott and Bump Hedman bringing the field to green. David Scott led lap one over Hedman, Hess (the current points leader), Darrell Bossard, and last week’s winner, Wyatt Scott. Wyatt Scott was fourth at lap two and third at lap three. Hess grabbed the lead at lap four, relegating David Scott to second over his son, Wyatt, Bossard, and Hedman. The younger Scott was second at lap ten while Hess had a near-quarter lap lead and was pulling away to a full straight lead at lap twelve. At halfway it was Hess leading Wyatt Scott, David Scott, Bossard, and Hedman. Steve Kania came into the top five at lap fifteen. With five laps left Hess had a half-lap advantage over Wyatt Scott, David Scott, Bossard, and Kania. That was the order at the finish in the green to checkers run that took seven minutes, twenty-seven seconds to run, averaging 17.88 seconds per lap.
The Challengers were next up with Nicholas Reed and Jon Seekings at the front for the start. Fourth-starting Greg Marsh was the leader at the end of one lap over Seekings, Last week’s winner Chris Horton, current points leader Holden Heineman, and Reed. Horton was the leader after two laps with Marsh, Seekings, Heineman, and Reed following. Heineman was third at four laps then second at five with John Mease moving up to fourth. The halfway point had Horton leading Heineman, Marsh, Mease, and Seekings. The leaders entered heavy traffic in lap six with Heineman starting to close the gap on the leader. Yellow was shown at lap eight with Charles Silvis slow on the front straight in traffic. At nine laps Horton was leading Heineman, Mease, Marsh, and Reed. At eleven laps Mease and Heineman got together in turn three with Heineman the getting wide and slowing to a halt. The finish had Horton with his second win in as many weeks over Mease, Marsh, Reed, and Tommy LaBarbera up into fifth.
The night-capper was for the Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks with Wesley McCray and Donald Blood leading the way. Former champion Jason Covey had mechanical issues and pulled off during pace laps. At the end of one it was McCray leading Blood, Gary Fisher, Douglas Eck, and Bill Applebee. Eighth starting John Boardman was side by side with Applebee for fourth at lap two when caution flew for David Tower and Michael Oakes, spun in turn four. At five complete it was still McCray leading but Boardman second over Blood, Matt Sampson, and Fisher. The order was the same throw halfway. Sampson took over third spot on lap three. Coming off turn two and having to lift for a lapped car in the way, McCray slowed enough to for Boardman to scoot by for the lead, which he would never surrender. Last week’s winner Jason Black was fifth at lap thirteen. With one lap left Kreg Schreckengost looped his mount, setting up a one lap dash for the win. At the checkers it was Boardman, McCray, Sampson, Black, and Blood.
Next week, Memorial Day weekend, will be the ULMS Super Late Models with free grandstand admission to veterans with proper identification!
