5.22.21 Wayne County Speedway Results

Orrville, OhioSaturday, May 22, 2021By Mike Swanger For the first time, the Zimmer;s Service Center United Late Model Series (ULMS) pulled into Wayne County Speedway and when the racing was finished at was all Max Blair’s night. The Centerville Pa. driver started the evening off by just missing the track record held by Chris Madden of 16.580 seconds set back on May 27, 2017. Blair stopped the clock with a time of 16.598 seconds in the Integra Shocks qualifying. Driving the Murphy’s Logging, Viper Risk Management Group and Privity’s Auto Wrecking #111, Blair would win his heat, be the best in the Scramble to start on the pole of the 30 lap feature. At the drop of the green flag, Mitch Caskey would follow Blair closely for the opening five circuits, but the WCS points leader tried to get by Blair coming out of turn four on lap five and would spin bringing out the caution. Jared Miley, the other heat winner, would take over second with Doug Drown in third and those two would go back and forth for second until lap 14 when Drown belted the guardrail in turn one and that would end his night. This would move Chub Frank into third with Corey Conley and Ryan Missler battling him for third. Miley was trying every part of the 3/8 mile oval to overtake Blair but never could during the middle part of the feature, A lap 22 caution for a slowed Jerry Aber would bunch the field back together and when the green flew again, Blair was able to pull away from Miley as Missler worked on Frank for third until Conley edged past Missler with five to go. Caskey had worked his way back and caught Missler with three to go for fifth. As the checkered flag waved, Blair was followed by Miley, and Frank making it an all Pennsylvania podium, Conley was fourth followed by Caskey. Mansfield’s Kyle Moore would take the lead from Jimmy Smith on lap three of the CORBON Ammunition Modified feature and the Slicker Graphics, Kepling Flooring and Moore Brothers Racing #1* would go the rest of the way for his third straight win. Doug Drown took second from Smith on lap five and would keep the pressure on Moore for the top spot but late in the race, Drown’s machine became hampered with handling problems and Moore pulled away to win by four and a half seconds as D J Cline caught Drown in turn four on the final lap for second. Tyler Frankenberry and Scott Peltz filled out the top five. Heat winners were Frankenberry and Smith. For the second week in a row, the McKenzie Concrete Super Stocks had a hard time getting the opening laps in due to cautions as Jimmy Humphrey would be the leader and as the race got to green for a distance, Strasburg’s Paul Holmes would take the lead from Humphrey on lap four with Tyler Wiles slipping past Humphrey on the next circuit and Brandon Morrow taking third on the next lap. With five laps to go, Don Rutt and Humphrey made contact with Humphrey spinning and Justin Lorentz making hard contact with the #60 and ending their race. On the restart, Tyler Wiles car did not get up to speed and he would coast back to the pits as Holmes and his Bullitt Manufacturing and NewFast Motorsports #70 pulled away for the win as Morrow held off Kyle Moore for second. Don Rutt finished fourth with David Uhler collecting his second straight fifth place finish. Holmes and Morrow posted the heat wins. Ryan Carder of Wooster would start on the outside front row of the JOYRIDE Transport Mini Stock feature and grab the lead at the drop of the green flag and spent the first seven laps fending off Doug Hensel. At that time, Jordan James would overtake Hensel and hound Carder the rest of the way as James, going after his 4th straight win, would try every which way to get by Carder, With the checkered flag waving, Carder and his Close Trucking #3c beat James by a half a car length for his first win ever. Johnny Bruce would finish fourth behind Hensel as Kyle Petit rounded out the top five, James and Mitch Reichard scored the heat wins. The Mod Lites made their 2021 season debut at ‘Orrville’s Historic Oval’ and they got off to a rough start as pole sitter Logan Lewis would spin in turn one and collect Joe Burkhead and Jerry Adkins as all three were finished for the night. This would put Zanesville’s Blake Morris into the pole position on the restart and he would take the Morris Trucking, Print with Attitude and Tye Twarog #1 to the Summit Racing victory circle after leading all the way. It was a three way dog fight for second as the Hubbard’s, Carson and Darrick, dueled for second with Chris Robinson in the mix and finishing in that order as Morris pulled away for the win. Dustin Kolanski finished fifth. Heat winners were Morris and Robinson. Picking up the Rich’s Tire and Service Hard Charger awards were Corey Conley, Jason King, Kyle Moore, Jordan James and Darrick Hubbard Jr. Next Saturday night at WCS it will be a Doubleheader of Sprint car Action as the Pine Tree Towin & Recovery Sprints will return and the NRA 360 Sprints will invade as part of a three race week end for them as the will be at Lima on Friday before coming to WCS on Saturday as both will be $2,500 to win features.
