Abbottstown, PA (May 24, 2025) – Defending track champion Troy Wagaman Jr. made a late-race pass in heavy lapped traffic to claim his first win of the 2025 season Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway, capturing the prestigious Bob Leiby Memorial.
Wagaman, who started ninth in the 30-lap feature, worked his way through a talented field to outduel race-long leader Cameron Smith in the closing laps, finally edging ahead with just five circuits remaining.
The action began with Reese Nowotarski jumping to the early lead into turn one, but Brett Strickler powered around the outside to take command out of turn four to lead the opening lap. Cameron Smith quickly settled into third with Derek Hauck hot on his heels. Hauck and Smith traded the spot before contact sent Hauck spinning in turn two, bringing out the first caution of the race.
On the restart, it was Strickler leading Nowotarski, Smith, Preston Lattomus, and Wagaman, who had already cracked the top five. Smith wasted little time making his move, getting around Nowotarski for second before a second caution flew for an incident involving Dave Grube and Hauck.
Back under green, Lattomus made a move on Nowotarski for third, just as Smith began to apply pressure on Strickler for the top spot. Smith completed the pass on lap six and started to pull away while Wagaman climbed to fourth.
Wagaman’s charge continued as he took over third from Lattomus, just before a caution flew for Talan Haas and Strickler, who had been running second at the time.
The restart saw Smith leading Wagaman, Lattomus, Nowotarski, and Ryan Newton. Newton quickly disposed of Nowotarski for fourth while Brandon Rahmer followed him through to take over the fifth position.
As the leaders entered lapped traffic, Wagaman began reeling in Smith, cutting into his lead lap by lap. Smith skillfully navigated the slower cars, but slight contact with a lapped car allowed Wagaman to close the gap. With six laps to go, Wagaman was on his tail tank, and the two engaged in a battle in heavy traffic.
Coming to the line with five laps remaining, Wagaman edged Smith by a nose to officially take the lead and never looked back.
“We’ve been close,” said Wagaman in victory lane. “We’ve had seconds and thirds and fourths and fifths – feels good to finally get one.”
The victory marks Wagaman’s first of the 2025 season and a statement performance as he defends his Lincoln Speedway championship title.
Next Saturday, May 31, Lincoln Speedway is back in action with the Steve Smith Tribute Race for the 410 Sprints and 358 Sprints. Racing is scheduled for 7PM with pit gates opening at 4:30PM and grandstand gates opening at 5PM.
