5.26.18 Winchester Speedway Results
Winchester, VA- It was a unique night indeed last Saturday night at Winchester speedway. Heavy rain soaked the grounds an hour prior to the scheduled 6pm start time and despite the weather, promoter Greg Gunter decided to press on with the show. Track preparations were completed by 8:45 and the show began at 9:00. The rain created a smooth, but lightning fast surface and qualifying went off without a hitch. The headline 35-lap Clash for Cash Late Model event wen on the track at 10:45, but practically came to a short end before it ever really got going. A lap-1 pile-up saw the car of Nick Davis get on his roof as four other cars all joined the chaos bringing out the red flag. Once the field went back to green, disaster struck again on lap-5, as Joey Leavell flipped wildly in the third turn as a suspension part failed causing his car to dig into the track surface bringing out the red flag for the second time in just five-laps. Rescue personnel had to cut Leavell out of his battered racer where he was taken to a local hospital for observation. At this point in the event, which was well past the tracks mandated midnight curfew, officials decided to halt the event and run the remaining 30-laps at a date yet to be determined. Three support class features were run with Shane Sixeas scoring his first career Winchester feature win in the 15-lap Four-Cylinder main, Mike Bennett took his first of the season in the 15-lap Enduro Stock feature with Jason Wilkins scoring his 3rd win of 2018 in the 15-lap U-Car contest. The scheduled 20-lap RUSH Crate Late Model event also fell victim to curfew and will be made up later in the season.
