FREMONT, OH – Aaron Reutzel made it a sweep of the weekend in Ohio with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1, dominating the 40-lap feature on Computer Man Night at Fremont Speedway.
It wasn’t easy as Mother Nature once again played havoc with The Track That Action Built, as a rain shower caused a three hour delay in getting the program finished. The Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks will run their B-mains and A-mains during a yet to be determined date because of the lateness of the show.
Reutzel, the defending All Star champion, won at Attica Raceway Park on Friday and took his first ever victory at Fremont Sunday as the All Stars returned to The Track That Action Built after a three and a half year absence. It was the 123rd series race at Fremont Speedway. The Clute, Texas driver started 11th and took the lead from Paul McMahan on lap 12 and was at times the fastest car on the track by over half a second.
“I like doing stuff like this where a guy can just drive really hard and kind of make a difference. Luckily Grant, Cheeseburger, Jim Bob and Derek did a hell of a job on getting the car set up tonight. Me and Grant work together so good. It’s hard to find a good crew chief where you can do stuff like that with. Me and him toss scenarios back and forth with each other and one of those scenarios we talked about planned out really good for us. I also want to thank the track for sticking it out for us. We just want to race. Thank you fans for sticking it out through the rain. They did a hell of a job on the race track. I didn’t think it was going to be racy…I thought it would kind of be one lane but it ended up widening out and a guy who drove his race car hard could make the difference up. Coming from 11th showed that tonight. This race team…just unbelievable. We put this deal together last year and it’s all the same group of guys. Just unbelievable what Mike and Josh Baughman believed in me to do and all our sponsors,” said Reutzel beside his Folkens Brothers Trucking/Fisher Body Shop/Precision Catalyst/Dissolvalloy/Hollywood Coating backed machine.
McMahan, from Nashville, Tenn.., drove the Tom Buch owned, TI 22/The Tree Center/Coastal Race Parts/HP Engines backed #13 to a second place finish.
“He’s the champion for a reason. Their team is great and hats off to those guys. He about sucked my tear-offs off when he (Reutzel) drove by me. He showed me the top and once I got up there I could kind of maintain with him. Hats off to Tom Buch and my misfits and everyone who helps us out on this race team. I always love coming to Fremont…it was fun,” said McMahan.
Leduc, Canada’s Skylar Gee, who is running for the All Star’s rookie of the year award, drove a hell of a race to finish third, his best ever All Star showing aboard his Bluvos/Carlan Services/Pat Beck Motorsports/Strongs Crane Sales and Repair backed #99.
“Hats off to Marty. He works his ass off all night getting the car right for me. We weren’t great for qualifying but he got it right for the heat and even better for the feature. It’s just us two out here…we’ve been working our asses off so this is really good for us. The first 20 laps was just for survival but once we got some fuel burned off and I could move around and kept digging and digging,” said Gee.
McMahan and Tyler Esh brought the field to green for the 40-lap feature but they got together and nearly crash in front of the field but the caution flew for debris. On the ensuing start McMahan took the lead, holding off Esh with Tim Shaffer and Brock Zearfoss in pursuit. McMahan pulled away slightly as Esh had his hands full with Shaffer when the caution flew for a stalled Andrew Palker.
When the green reappeared McMahan led Esh, Shaffer, Zearfoss, Reutzel, Buddy Kofoid and Craig Mintz. Shaffer took second on lap eight and was closing on McMahan when the caution flew for a stopped Esh. On the restart Reutzel took second from Shaffer and a lap later flew around McMahan for the lead. Reutzel pulled away to nearly a two second lead while McMahan, Shaffer, Zearfoss and Kofoid battled for second. Just past the half-way point Shaffer, Kofoid and Zearfoss tangled while battling for third bringing the action to a halt.
With a clear track on the restart Reutzel set sail and pulled away while McMahan settled into second with Mintz, Gee, Brandon Spithaler, Greg Wilson and Stuart Brubaker in tow. Kofoid would have a rear tire explode three laps later for the final race caution of the race.
When the green reappeared Reutzel once again pulled away. But, with 10 laps to go, Reutzel encountered heavy lapped traffic and McMahan began to close while a tremendous battle ensued for third involving Mintz, Gee, Greg Wilson and Christopher Bell. Gee took third on lap 34 and Bell moved into fourth two laps later. Once cleared of some of the traffic, Reutzel drove to victory 1.6 seconds ahead of McMahan with Gee, Bell, Mintz, Wilson, Shaffer (coming from tail after his earlier race spin), Spencer Bayston, Spithaler and Dale Blaney rounding out the top 10.
Fremont Speedway will be off next weekend but back to racing on Saturday, June 8 for Vision Quest Night. Prior to the night’s racing the Fremont Speedway Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will take place in the covered grandstands. The All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group will pay $4,000 to the 410 sprint feature winner and the KS Sales and Service AFCS presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales will pay $1,000 to the winner with the trucks also in action.
