5.31.21 Southern Nationals Spring Late Models Results
(June 1, 2021) In the season-ending ‘Scott Sexton Memorial’ for the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series on Monday, May 31 at 411 Motor Speedway, Jimmy Owens became the first repeat winner on the miniseries, while Dale McDowell clinched his second Spring Nationals Championship! For Owens, the Newport, Tennessee superstar qualified well before picking up a heat race triumph to earn the inside of the second row for the start of the 52-lap headliner. Jimmy then worked his way past polesitter and early leader Randy Weaver to grab the point on the 25th circuit and never looked back in leading each of the remaining laps during the caution-free affair to record the $10,052 paycheck.
Randy Weaver, who had won earlier in the Memorial Day weekend tripleheader with the series at Dixie Speedway, held on to finish in the runner-up spot – 2.569 seconds behind Owens at the checkers. Ashton Winger rounded out the podium at the Seymour, Tennessee oval by crossing the finish line in third. Dale McDowell continued his exceptional consistency on the tour by coming home in the fourth position, while Mike Marlar grabbed the final spot inside of the top five in this year’s edition of the ‘Scott Sexton Memorial.’
Jimmy’s home state win last night at 411 Motor Speedway marked his fourth career trip to victory lane in Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series competition. In the nine Spring Nationals races that escaped the wrath of Mother Nature this year, Jimmy was able to notch a pair of victories, while Jonathan Davenport, Brandon Overton, David Payne, Dale McDowell, Tanner English, Randy Weaver, and Tyler Millwood all claimed single wins. Jimmy’s five-figure triumph came aboard a Ramirez Motorsports XR1 Rocket Chassis powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine with sponsorship from Reece Monument Company, Boomtest Well Service, Tim Short Auto Group, Red Line Oil, Georgia Arms, Midwest Sheet Metal, and Ohlins Shocks.
A stellar 40 car field piled into the pit area at 411 Motor Speedway for the 9th Annual ‘Scott Sexton Memorial,’ which served as the season finale for the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series and was co-sanctioned by the Iron-Man Late Model Series. Randy Weaver was quickest overall during FK Rod Ends qualifying with his fast lap of 15.309 seconds. The four heat race winners were Weaver, Jimmy Owens, Ashton Winger, and Dale McDowell, while consolation event victories went to both Heath Hindman and Hudson O’Neal. Provisionals were awarded to David Payne and Jeff Neubert (Spring Nationals), along with Dustin Nobbe and Steve Smith (Iron-Man).
Following the victory lane celebration for race winner Jimmy Owens and his #20 team, Dale McDowell was honored in front of the large crowd and the FloRacing cameras for winning his second Spring Nationals Championship! Dale was awarded a $10,053 check for his title, while Donald McIntosh finished second ($3,553) and David Payne placed third ($2,553) in the final point tally. A total of 130 different drivers competed with the miniseries in 2021 and 56 drivers entered more than one series race. With the 2021 Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series now complete, Ray Cook and everyone associated with the tour would like to thank all of the drivers, teams, track promoters, fans, and sponsors for making this season a great one!
