6.13.12 Brownstown Speedway Results

BROWNSTOWN, IN (June 13, 2012) – Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, AR scored his first ever UMP Summernationals and Brownstown Speedway win on Wednesday Night. The 24-year-old second generation driver dominated all 40 laps of the opening night of the 2012 Summernationals earning $5,000 for his win in the 29th Annual Hoosier Dirt Classic.

Moyer Jr. finished well ahead of second place runner, Brian Shirley of Chatham, IL. The winner’s 54-year-old Hall of Fame father, Billy Moyer came home third followed by Terry Casey of New London, WI and Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, IN.

Moyer Jr. grabbed the lead at the start of the event which drew 49 entrants to the historic quarter-mile oval. Moyer Jr. was challenged early by his father and Shirley, but he pulled away to just over a straightaway lead during the race which was slowed by four caution flags.

The elder Moyer held the second spot in the running order until lap five when Shirley passed him. Shirley and Moyer then would battle for the remaining 35 laps for the runner-up position behind Moyer Jr. The two would race side-by-side for several laps during the race as Casey would close on both of them near the end of the race to make it a three-car battle for second.

In victory lane Moyer Jr. was extremely excited in taking his first career Summernationals and Brownstown win. “It’s big to win here at Brownstown, people all over talk about Brownstown and its history, I know my dad has won here several times, so it feels good to get one here and our first Summernationals victory as well,” said the driver of the Victory Circle by Moyer Chevrolet.

“The track was real good tonight, when I drew that number one spot I thought I had a real good chance to win tonight, but then I looked over and my dad was on the outside front row with me, and I knew it was going to be important to get out front, I don’t have a lot of laps here, but the car was just terrific tonight and I want to thank Bill Schlieper of Pro Power Racing Engines, the motor ran awesome.”

Moyer Jr.’s car is sponsored by Henderson Motorsports, Banner Valley Hauling, Imperial Motors, L&D Trucking, CarCityInc.com, Watters Auto Land, New Vision Graphics, Crop Production Services, Red Line Oil, BSB Manufacturing and PRC.

Completing the top ten were Jason Feger of Bloomington, IL; Jason McBride of Carbondale, IL; Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, IL; Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, IL; and Steve Barnett of Franklin, IN.

In the UMP Modified division Devin Gilpin of Columbus, IN racked up win number 18 on the season by leading all 25 laps of the main event. The 21-year old third generation racer inherited the pole starting position when Bradley Sterrett, who was scheduled to start on the pole, pulled off the track on the parade lap of the race.

Gilpin took the lead at the start of the main event and was never challenged. Matt Boknecht of Seymour, IN, who started 11th finished second followed by 15th place starting, Richie Lex of Morgantown, IN. NASCAR’s Kenny Wallace of St. Louis, MO in his first ever appearance at Brownstown finished fourth followed by Joe Godsey of Edinburgh,

Gilpin’s victory was his third of the year at Brownstown and his 13th career at the track. He leads with the nation in victories with 18 overall. “I have to thank all sponsors, without them this would not be possible, we have had a great year so far, to win this many races this early on is just amazing, we just need to keep this up and hopefully get that UMP Championship.”

Gilpin’s Impressive Race Cars by Dasco car is sponsored by Dasco Race Supply, A-1 Pallet, Inc., Blondie’s Pizza, Robert and Sons Aluminum, Allstar Performance, Eddie Gilstrap Motors, Bigg Daddy’s Grill and TE Motorsports. His car is powered by a Mike Shell Racing Engine.

Completing the top ten were John DeMoss of Bloomington, IN; Gabe Menser of Ashmore, IL; Jesse Cramer of Spencer, IN; Tyler Nicely of Owensboro, KY; and Kent Robinson of Bloomington, IN.

In the Super Stock Division Cullen Goodman of Hymera, IN picked up his third win of the year at Brownstown. Goodman, who started third in the race, led all 25 laps for the win. Goodman was challenged early by Randy Petro of Columbus, IN, but he eventually pulled away from Petro. Goodman’s Rick Gumm Chassis is sponsored by Wilson Auto Repair and Lambert’s 24 hour towing.

Petro would eventually lose the second spot to 16th starting, Greg Owens of North Vernon, IN, who roared through the field to claim the runner-up spot. Owens got around Petro on the 16th circuit. Marty Cooper of Franklin, IN was fourth followed by 7-time track champion, Tim Clark of North Vernon, IN.
