6.19.21 Ventura Raceway Results
With all the northern tracks shutting down last weekend because of the extreme heat, Ventura Raceway became the coolest place to race in California. Twenty-one IMCA Modifieds showed up and IMCA Sport Mods and IMCA Sport Compacts were introduced to Ventura for the first time. West Coast IMCA guru Paul Vetter was there to help with these new classes and add his flare to announcing all the IMCA classes. VRA Sprint Cars, Dwarf Cars and Hobby Stocks rounded out the program.
VRA Sprinters saw Troy Rutherford show up to break in his new motor before the West Coast 360 race this weekend. Like always when he shows up he becomes the guy to beat. He finished second in his heat and won the Feature after a heated battle with the Josh Ford entry driven by Brandon Thomson.
The big show of the night was the twenty one entries from all over southern California in the IMCA Modified class. We had three seven car heat races with heat one going to defending track champion Jack Parker, heat two to Danny Lauer and heat three to Trevor Fitzgibbon. From a third starting position Trevor lead all thirty laps of the IMCA Modified Main for his Second win in a row at Ventura. Following Trevor to the checkers was Tom Smith in second and Rob Sanders in third.
Thirteen VRA Dwarf Cars were in attendance. First heat race was won by Gage Cheek and the second heat by Jason Horton. This set up a dual in the Main between Cheek and Horton until Gage Cheek took him self out and finished eighth and Jason Horton went on to win another Feature and extend his points lead.
The VRA Hobby Stocks had an exciting finish when Kjirsten Wilson passed the leader Wayne Heurung at the tape. After some investigating it was pointed out that on a red flag Kjirsten went to the pits, had work done on her car, and rejoined the main. This is in violation of our rules and she was disqualified and Wayne Heurung was awarded the win. We at Ventura Raceway apologize to Wayne and Kjirsten for not recognizing this at the time. Wayne will be presented his trophy at the next Hobby Stock race.
We at Ventura Raceway are excited about starting two new classes this year along with IMCA’s help. The first is IMCA Sport Mods, a car that is similar to IMCA Modifieds with different rules to help cut costs. The second is IMCA Sport Compacts and just like the name they are small four cylinder cars. You can find the rules for these classes on the IMCA web site.
John Piker won the Sport Mod main against eleven other entries leading all but the first lap. The first ever Sport Compact Feature was won by Andrew Schmitz. In the winners interview Andrew said you could build a car like his for under $2000.
Next race is July 10; VRA Sprint Cars, Senior Sprints, Dwarf Cars IMCA Modifieds and Hobby Stocks. For all you Demolition Derby fans it will by held July 31st. The complete 2021 schedule is now posted on the venturaraceway.com web site.
