Malta, NY – One week ago, “Batman”, Peter Britten, picked up his second win of the season in DIRTcar Modified competition at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway. This week it was “The Dark Knight” (Marc Johnson), who did the same – won his second feature event of the season.
With the win, Johnson’s career DIRTcar Modified win total at the track is pushed to 31. His 31 wins ranks him seventh on the all-time feature winners list at the track, tying him with the late Lou Lazzaro.
Don Ronca led the opening lap of the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature event. By lap two both Neal Stratton and C.G. Morey had made their way past with Stratton holding the lead. Marc Johnson and rookie Dylan Grogan also got by Ronca, into third and fourth position respectively.
By lap five Ronnie Johnson moved into the fifth position as Ronca dropped back near the end of the top ten. On lap nine Marc Johnson took over the second position from Morey and set his sights on race leader Stratton.
Stratton, the son of long time Green Mountain State campaigner Hector Stratton, held the lead until lap 12 when Marc Johnson used the low groove to take over the top spot. Stratton dropped to second with Morey a very distant third. Ronnie Johnson and Grogan rounded out the top five.
Tommy D’Angelo brought out the caution flag on lap 17 when he slowed, forcing a restart. While under caution, Stratton’s left front Hoosier Racing tire went flat, however he continued to stay out there.
On the restart Marc Johnson held the lead with Stratton second, Ronnie Johnson third, Jack Speshock fourth and Morey fifth. Ronnie Johnson had moved to second before the “big one” happened on the front stretch.
Stratton made contact with Ronnie Johnson and went hard into the front stretch wall. Numerous others were collected in some way including Ronca, Andrew Buff, Morey and Peter Britten.
On the restart Marc Johnson held the lead with Speshock and Ronnie Johnson following. The yellow lights were back on one lap later for Justin Stone and Felix Roy who tangled in turn one.
When racing resumed it was Johnson, Speshock and Johnson, one-two-three with points leader Matt DeLorenzo fourth and Brian Calabrese fifth. Ronnie Johnson moved into the second position on lap 25, forcing Speshock back to third.
As the laps clicked off, Ronnie Johnson closed on Marc. With five laps to go Ronnie Johnson was all over Marc as DeLorenzo also closed on them both. Ronnie Johnson could not catch Marc while trying to defend the second place position from DeLorenzo.
Marc Johnson held on for his second win of the season with Ronnie Johnson second, DeLorenzo third, Speshock fourth and Calabrese fifth. Heat races for the 27 cars on hand went to Morey, Stratton and Ronca.
Rocky Warner won the 25-lap DIRTcar 358 Modified feature event. A.J. Munger led the early laps of the race with Warner and Jack Speshock following. The caution flag waved on lap four when Todd Morey, Brendan Gibbons and David Schilling tangled in between turns three and four.
When racing resumed Warner kept the race lead only for the caution flag to wave again, this time for Justin Stone.
On the restart Warner held the lead over Munger, Jack Speshock, Neal Stratton and Mike Coffey, Jr. Mike Mahaney would take over fifth around lap ten, forcing Coffey out of the top five.
With Warner holding a large lead, the battle for the remaining top five positions was fierce. Munger held onto second but Stratton and Speshock hounded the second-generation driver. Mahaney then entered the mix on lap 18.
In the end, no one had anything for Johnstown, New York’s Warner. Warner picked up the win over Stratton, Munger, Marc Johnson and Speshock. Heat races for the 31-car field were won by Stratton, Ray Hall, Jr. and Warner.
With the win and his heat race win, Warner collected the $251 “Big Red 1 Checkered Flag Challenge” in memory of Jason Herrington.
Taylor Wason won the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature event. Dakota Green was the first to lead the DIRTcar Sportsman feature event with Brent Warrant taking over second early on. The caution flag waved on lap eight when Derrick McGrew, Jr. came to a stop in turn four.
When racing resumed Green continued to lead with Cole Hentschel moving into second. On lap ten Hentschel looked under Green and took over the top spot. Green gave way to Taylor Wasson with about ten laps to go with Green dropping to third.
With Hentschel in lapped traffic, Wasson closed in and with three laps to go the difference was about five car lengths. As the next two laps progressed Wasson closed in and coming out of turn four on the last lap, Wasson made the winning pass.
Wasson, who was subbing for Chris Crane, Jr., picked up the win over Hentschel, Cody Ochs, Green and Craig Wholey. With 32 cars on hand, heat races were won by Hentschel, Green, Dan Grignon and Katrina LeClaire.
Kim Duell won the DIRTcar Pro Stock division feature event. The win was Duell’s 34th of his career and gives him the top spot on the all-time feature winners list. Kyle Hoard finished second with Shane Henderson third, Chuck Dumblewski fourth and Scott Duell fifth. Henderson and Hoard won the DIRTcar Pro Stock heat races.
Nick Arnold won the 20 lap Limited Sportsman feature event. Arnold took the lead late in the event and held on to take the win over Bryan Jones, Alex Smith, Adam Tranka and Sloan Cherko. Jones, William Lussier, Jr. and Derek Emigh won the heat races for the 26-car field.
Shane Wetherington won the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. Mike Duggan led lap number one as the field raced two, three and four wide behind him. Duggan held the lead until the caution flag waved on lap number eleven, forcing a restart. Damian Ward took the lead on the restart with Wetherington moving into second. Ward led until lap 19 when Wetherington was able to get past for the win. Ward finished second with Gary O’Brien third, Dave Cook fourth and Josh Hemming fifth.
Josh Reome won the DIRTcar 4-Cylinder feature event. Reome was also the first Dual Cam across the line. Jake Fountain finished second with Josh Ramsey third, Chris Charbonneau fourth (first Single Cam) and Glenn Engstrom fifth.
The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action on Friday, June 26th with all weekly divisions in action plus the DIRTcar 4-Cylinder division. Pit gates open at 3pm, grandstand gates open at 5pm with hot laps rolling off at 6pm. Racing is set to begin at 7pm.
