6.20.14 USMTS Modifieds Results

ELK CITY, Okla.—Stormy Scott shadowed Daniel Hilsabeck for 32 laps before making his move, and then led the final eight go-arounds to score the victory Friday night as the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by Swan Energy invaded the Elk City Speedway.

On a quest for his career-first United States Modified Touring Series victory, Hilsabeck started on the pole and held Scott at bay for most of the race but eventually settled for the third-place paycheck while Scott secured his 27th career win and the $2,000 top prize.

Rodney Sanders, who nearly won Wednesday and barely won Thursday, came from the 13 starting spot and worked his way into the top five by lap 15, and then leap-frogging both teammates Dereck Ramirez and Johnny Scott one lap later to move into third behind Stormy Scott.

The defending USMTS national champ got around Hilsabeck with five to go but could not reel in the elder Scott twin and wound up in the runner-up spot.
Dereck Ramirez held on for fourth while Kelly Shryock advanced from 19 to fifth to earn the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.

Johnny Scott was sixth, Clyde Dunn Jr. passed 14 competitors en route to a seventh-place result, Cade Dillard placed eighth, Chris Dawson finished ninth and Stormy Scott’s teammate and car owner, Bryan Rowland, rounded out the top 10.

Dillard, making his first USMTS start behind the wheel of Chris Brown’s LG21 chassis, was up to fourth at one point but momentarily slipped off of the track on a restart with five laps remaining and slipped back to tenth before gathering it back in.

The series heads south of the Red River on Saturday for the 5th Annual Amarillo Ambush at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas, where Rodney Sanders is always a clear favorite among the fans who watched and follow him develop his skills there as a teenager.

To the crowd’s delight, Sanders emerged as the winner of the inaugural USMTS event there in 2010. Kelly Shryock held off Ryan Gustin to win in 2011 and two events here held at the facility in 2012 with Jason Hughes and Randy Timms getting to the winners circle. Stormy Scott is the defending race winner.

The racing surface at Bill Worthen’s 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval is a generous 75 feet wide in the turns with 20 degrees of banking and 65 feet wide down the straight-aways with 5 degrees of banking. The facility has a seating for more than 4,000 spectators and race teams enjoy concrete pads available with lighting and water.

Grandstand gates open at 6 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7. General admission seating is $15 and kids ages 6 and under are admitted free. Pit passes are $30. Support classes include Pony Stocks, Cyclones, Street Stocks and Limited Modifieds.

The Route 66 Motor Speedway is a located 1.5 miles south of I-40 at exit 75 on Lakeside Dr. For more information, call the track office at 806-383-0375 or 806-335-3478 on race day. The track’s website can be found at www.route66motorspeedway.com.
