By: Steven Curry – Race Reporter

Reynoldsville- A great turnout of cars and fans from all over the area set up a great second night of racing at Hummingbird Speedway Saturday night. The night welcomed the Young Guns Jr Sprints back to the track for the first time this year, joining our regular five divisions. It was also Race-1 Motor Speedway night at the track as they sponsored trophies for all divisions. Feature winners on the night included: Brayden Beatty in the Young Guns Jr Sprints (Stock Class), Conner Metheney in the Young Guns Jr Sprints (Open Class), Wayne Truitt in the Lockwood Processing Four Cylinders, Doug Surra in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair & Service Semi Late Models, Bryce Swauger in the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks, Doug Eck in the BWP Bats Super Late Models, and Tim Bish in the Cypress Clock & Gift Shop Street Stocks.

The Young Guns Jr Sprints (Stock Class) kicked off the night’s feature racing action with Adam Presnar and Brayden Beatty leading the field to the opening green flag of their 10-lap feature race. Beatty jumped out to the lead on the initial start with Presnar and Mason McAndrew following behind in second and third respectively. On lap 2, a hard-charging Garrett Davenport, who started last, passed McAndrew to move into third behind Beatty and Presnar. Two laps later, on lap 4, Davenport worked his way around Presnar to take the second position as Beatty continued to lead. Beatty continued to maintain his lead over the field as the race reached its halfway mark. Beatty went on to lead the rest of the way enroute to picking up the win. Beatty was followed by: 2) Garrett Davenport 3) Adam Presnar 4) Mason McAndrew 5) Logan Jackson 6) David Coley. Beatty won the heat race.

Nate Shook and Conner Metheney led the Young Guns Jr Sprints (Open Class) trackside for their 12-lap feature event. Metheney pulled out to the early lead over Shook and Colten McAndrew. Later on lap 1, McAndrew used the high side to his advantage to work his way by Shook to take the second spot behind Metheney. Metheney maintained his lead over McAndrew and Shook as the race crossed its halfway point. Metheney never looked back in the remaining six laps on his way to capturing the checkered flag. Metheney was followed by: 2) Colten McAndrew 3) Nate Shook. DNS: Kalen Jackson. Metheney won the heat race.

The Lockwood Processing Four Cylinders were next to the track with Brooks Kaufman and Travis Timko leading the field to the green flag for their 15-lap feature. Timko jumped out to the early advantage over Kaufman and Wayne Truitt. A caution for a spin on the frontstretch on lap 2 setup the first and only restart of the race. On the restart, Truitt made it three-wide for the lead with Timko and Kaufman. Timko was able to sneak away with the lead as Truitt got past Kaufman for second on the high side. Later that lap, Truitt went to the inside of Timko and made the pass to take the lead and lead lap 3. On lap 4, Blake Joiner took to the outside of Kaufman and completed the pass to move into third behind Truitt and Timko. Truitt extended his lead over Timko and Joiner as the race reached its halfway mark. On lap 7, a mechanical failure on Joiner’s car forced him to retire from the race, moving Kaufman back into the third position. On lap 10, Kaufman worked his way around Timko to take the second spot behind Truitt. Then, on lap 11, Joe Anthony got past Timko to move to third behind the leaders. Truitt held on and led the remaining four laps on his way to winning his first feature of the 2020 season. Truitt was followed by: 2) Brooks Kaufman 3) Joe Anthony 4) David Smail 5) Cody McNaughton 6) Ben Lehane 7) Nicholas Eck 8) Bill Fuchs 9) Travis Timko 10) Tanner Petrillo 11) Garrett McKinney 12) Blake Joiner 13) Justin Finland 14) Jim Boyer 15) Mike Potter. DNS: Jay Swager Jr. and Cody Cassler. Truitt, Timko, and Kaufman won the heat races.

Doug Surra and Bernie Whiteford Jr. led the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair & Service Semi Late Models trackside for their 20-lap feature race. Surra pulled out to the lead on the initial start with Whiteford Jr. and Gabe Shaffer following behind. A couple of laps got completed before the first caution flag of the race for a spin in turn 2. On the restart, Deegen Watt looked to the inside of Shaffer and completed the pass to take the third position on lap 3. A caution for a spin on the frontstretch setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, Watt worked his way around Whiteford Jr. to move into the second spot on lap 5. On lap 6, a caution for a slow car on the backstretch setup another restart. However, a mechanical issue on Watt’s car under caution forced him to retire from the race, moving Whiteford Jr. and Nick Erskine into second and third. On the following restart, Erskine worked his way by Whiteford Jr. to take the second spot on lap 7 just before another caution flag. On the restart, Shaffer looked to the inside of Whiteford Jr. and completed the pass to retake the third spot on lap 8 as the race entered its first extended green flag run. Surra built a pretty substantial lead over the field as the laps clicked away. Surra began to work his way through lap traffic as the race reached its last handful of laps. Just as Surra was about to take the white flag, a car spun coming off of turn 4, bringing out the yellow once again and setting up a green-white-checker finish. On the green-white-checker restart, Surra jumped out to the lead once again with Erskine and Shaffer following behind. With one lap to go, Whiteford Jr. got back by Shaffer to retake the third spot. Surra held on in the final couple of laps enroute to his first victory of the year. Surra was followed by: 2) Nick Erskine 3) Bernie Whiteford Jr. 4) Kyle Shannon 5) Gabe Shaffer 6) Caleb Whiteford 7) Vern Ward 8) Jim Challingsworth 9) Joey Malobicky 10) Joe Loffredo 11) Steve Brugmann 12) Bob McMillen 13) Jack Sarnousky 14) Deegen Watt 15) Nick Loffredo. DNS: Raven Fuller and Eddie Connor. Surra, Whiteford Jr., and Shaffer won the heat races.

The Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks were next to the track with Bill Mumau and Dalton Gustafson leading the field to the opening green flag for their 15-lap feature event. Mumau jumped out to the early advantage over Gustafson and Dennis Harrison Jr. A caution for a spin in turn 2 on lap 2 setup the first restart of the race. After another quick caution flag, the race saw its first extended green-flag run. On the restart, Mumau pulled out to the lead with Gustafson in second and last week’s feature winner, Bryce Swauger, now in the third position. On lap 7, Swauger used the inside line to his advantage to get past Gustafson for the second spot and set his sights on Mumau for the lead. Later that lap, Mumau spun in turns 3 and 4, moving Swauger to the lead followed by Gustafson and Harrison Jr for the restart. On the ensuing restart, Swauger jumped out to the lead with Gustafson and Harrison Jr. in second and third respectively. On lap 8, Tim Steis worked his way around Harrison Jr. for the third spot. Swauger continued to pace the field until a caution for wreck in turn 1 on lap 11 set up another restart. After another quick caution flag, Steis looked to the inside of Gustafson and completed the pass to take the second position on lap 13. A couple more caution flags plagued the final couple laps but none of them phased Swauger as he held on to capture his second checkered flag of the 2020 season. Swauger was followed by: 2) Tim Steis 3) Dalton Gustafson 4) Tim Powell 5) Shawn Hadden 6) Josh Fields 7) Dennis Harrison Jr. 8) Rich Anderson 9) Justin Watt 10) Makinna Pearce 11) Casey Wolfe 12) Bill Mumau 13) Jenna Pfaff 14) Andy Frey. Hadden and Gustafson won the heat races.

Scott Alvetro and Wyatt Scott led the BWP Bats Super Late Models trackside for their 25-lap main. Doug Eck, who started on the inside of row 2, made it three-wide with Alvetro and Scott for the lead as soon as the green flag went up in the air. Eck cleared both of them for the lead with Scott second and Paul Kot in third. On lap 2, Mike Wonderling worked his way around Kot to take the third spot. The race stayed green until a caution for a spin in turn 4 set up the first restart of the race on lap 5. On the restart, Eck jumped out to the lead as Wonderling looked to the outside of Scott for second. Wonderling completed the pass around Scott as lap 6 was completed. One more lap was completed before a caution for a wreck involving Scott, Kot, and others set up another restart. After another quick caution flag, it was Eck, Wonderling, and Alvetro the top 3. The caution flag came out again on lap 9, setting up another restart. On the ensuing restart, Eck jumped out to the lead with Wonderling and Alvetro following behind. Three laps got completed before the caution flag flew again for a spin in turns 3 and 4 on lap 12. On the following restart, Eck checked out on the field again as the race crossed its halfway mark. The race stayed green until a slow car on the backstretch brought out the caution flag once again on lap 16. On what was ultimately the final restart of the race, Eck pulled out to the lead over Wonderling and Alvetro. He continued to check out on the field as the laps continued to tick away. Eck went unchallenged in the remaining 9 laps enroute to picking up his first ever win at Hummingbird. The Cypress Clock & Gift Shop Street Stocks capped off the night with their 20-lap feature with Brandon Connor and Trevor McCann leading the field to the opening green flag. Connor jumped out to the lead with Tim Bish and McCann following behind in second and third. Connor continued to lead the way for the opening handful of laps until a caution for a spin in turn 1 on lap 5 set up the first restart of the race. On the restart, Connor pulled out to the lead as McCann was challenged by Zack Gustafson for the third spot. On lap 6, Gustafson got by McCann to move into third behind Connor and Bish. On lap 8, Gustafson worked his way around Bish to take the second position just before a caution for a spin in turns 1 and 2 set up another restart. On the ensuing restart, Gustafson challenged Connor for the lead. Three laps got completed before another caution flag for a wreck in turn 3 set up yet another restart. On the following restart, Bish went to the highside of Gustafson and passed him to re-take the second position behind Connor. Bish continued to run the highside and powered past Connor to take the lead on lap 13. On lap 15, Gustafson worked his way around Connor to move into the second spot behind Bish.
