6.25.22 Winchester Speedway Results

By Brent Hottle
Winchester(VA)-It was a hot summer day in the Shenandoah Valley. However ,the hot
temperatures couldn’t stop a fun night at the races! This night would be especially fun for the
kids as it would be their night to shine. They would have a chance to race on the speedway later
in the night. We would see timed hotlaps for the crate and limited late model division. While the
pure and hobby stocks would have traditional hotlaps, and a pill draw would determine their
heat race starting positions.
Once the heat races were completed it was time for the kid’s bike races. The children would be
broken down into three age groups 5-7,-8-10, and 11-13. All of the children were smiling ear to
ear as they pulled their bicycles onto the speedway. Dustin Breeden, Luke Holiday, and Bentley
Mcintyre would win the races in their groups. It was great seeing all the children have so much
fun. They are the future of our sport, and one of them could be a future Winchester Speedway
feature winner. Next we would have our invocation and the playing of our National Anthem. It
was now feature time.
The first feature of the night was for the pure stock division. Pole sitter Walter Crouch would
take the early lead. Outside pole sitter Buddy Wilson would settle into the second position while
Chuckie Johnson and Brandon Lowery battled side by side for the third position. The only
caution of the event would come out on lap three as Andy Adkins would spin in turn three.
Crouch would continue to lead after the restart. Lowery would make a quick move to get around
Wilson for second. As the laps wore down, Wilson would challenge Lowery for the second
position several times. With two laps to go in the event Wilson would get under Lowery and
move into the second position. Walter Crouch would go on to win the event, followed by Buddy
Wilson and Brandon Lowery.
The crate late model division would be next. Dominance would be the word for this feature as
Mike Franklin would dominate during the twenty-five lap feature. Franklin would take the early
lead over pole sitter Travis Campbell. Franklin would build up to a full straight away lead and
pull up to lap traffic by the eleventh lap. As Franklin began to navigate lap traffic, Campbell
would begin to close in on the leader. The only caution of the event would be for Isaiah
Gochenour, he would spin in turn two on the twenty second lap. Franklin would pull back away
from the field after the restart. Mike Franklin would win the event, followed by Travis Campbell
and Tyler Hoy.
It was now time for the limited late model feature event. Twelve year old Gunnar Walls would
earn the pole position after winning his heat race earlier in the night. Scott Palmer would take
the early lead on lap one, just before the caution flag would wave for a slowing Tommy Cordell.
Palmer would jump out to a three car lead over Walls after the restart. That lead would be
quickly erased as the caution flag would once again wave for Tommy Cordell, who now had a
flat left rear tire on the fourth lap. It was clear Palmer had the car to beat, as he would once
again pull away from the field. By the halfway point Palmer would have a full straight away lead
over Gunnar Walls, who also had a full straight away lead over third place Rodney Walls. As
Palmer started to navigate lap traffic Gunnar Walls would begin a charge to catch the leader.
Walls would slowly start to reel in Palmer. Scott Palmer would go on to win the feature. Gunnar
Walls would finish second after cutting Palmer’s lead down to two car lengths. Jakob Piper
would finish third.
The final feature event of the night would be for the hobby stock division. Jason Wilkins would
take the early lead from his pole starting position. The event would be plagued by several
cautions during the event. Wilkins would never look back and lead all fifteen laps. Kristopher
Hutton would finish second, followed by Tom Caravello in third.
It was another great night at the races. A big thank you to everyone who helped make the kid’s
bike races a success. It was truly wonderful seeing them all have so much fun and coming down
to join in the victory celebrations during the night’s feature events. We look forward to seeing
everyone back next week as the super late models make their return to the action track.
