By Doug Watson

Budds Creek, MD- Pine Level North Carolina’s Dustin Mitchell made the most of his four-hour tow as he scored his first career Potomac Late Model feature win in last Friday nights 35-lap Gene VanMeter Memorial. The win for Mitchell, steering his Kryptonite chassis no.51M, was worth $2500 and made him the 112th different driver to score a Late Model win at the famed Southern Maryland oval.
Mitchell drew the pole for the feature and would eventually pace all 35-circuits for the break through win. Eventual runner-up Jamie Lathroum chased Mitchell the entire way but never got close enough to mount a serious challenge. “We’ve been here a few times in the past and ran well and it feels good to finally get one here.” Mitchell stated post race. “When the track started to take rubber I knew if I stayed in the black we’d be tough to beat and it worked in our favor tonight.” Jason Miller took third with Andy Anderson and Justin Weaver completing the top-five.
In the companion 20-lap RUSH Crate Late Model event Trevor Collins started on the pole and would lead the distance to collect his first career Potomac feature win aboard his Rocket no.11C. “We’ve won a few asphalt races but this is our first ever on dirt.” Said Collins. “I want to thank Rocket Chassis and everyone on this team for finally getting us here.” Chuck Bowie, Jeremy Pilkerton, Megan Mann and Mike Raleigh trailed at the finish.
In support class action, defending track champion Ed Pope Jr. drove to his first win of the season and career 23rd in the 15-lap Street Stock event, Defending Hobby Stock champion Mikey Latham scored his first of the season and career 13th in the divisions 15-lap main, defending class champion John Hardesty took his first of the season and career 27th in the 15-lap Strictly Stock contest with Shawn Payne collecting his third win in three starts in the nightcap 15-lap U-Car feature.
