6.26.21 Winchester Speedway Results

By Brent Hottle
Winchester, (VA) It was another beautiful Saturday here in the Shenandoah Valley. The weather was a perfect match for a great night of racing! I say it weekly, but once again we cannot thank Bobby Dove and his track crew enough for all of their hard work. We would once again see plenty of side by side passing at “The Action Track”. This was going to be a special night, with the running of the Sam Crouch Memorial for the Pure Stock division. On top of that we would have kid’s bike races along with a special foot race. We would have timed hot laps to set the heat race lineups for the pure stock, limited late model, and modified divisions. With a pill draw to setup the heat race lineups for the enduro division. We would see plenty of great racing in the heat races throughout all of the divisions, which only heightened the fans excitement for the main events!
Before the A-Mains we would start off with our weekly invocation and playing of our national anthem. Now it was time for our youth to take center stage. The kids were excited to get the chance to race their bicycles around the speedway. They were broken up into 3 divisions (5-7, 8-10 & 11-13). We would see Aaron Kiaser(5-7), Luke Holiday(8-10) and Dustin Breeden(11-13) win their bike races. Each winner was awarded a winners sign, $10 courtesy of HDK Motorsports, and $50 courtesy of Paul Jones. Every child who entered also received a goody bag. It was a fun event, and a great way to involve our children in the sport. Next up we would see some “Big Kids” have some fun. We would see some of our drivers meet on the front stretch for a foot race. In “Ricky Bobby” style, each driver had to wear their helmet and hold on to their steering wheel as they attempted to run 2 laps around an oval course marked by cones. The drivers would lineup oldest to youngest. Scott Palmer would win the foot race. He was also the oldest competitor in the event! He would be awarded a free pit pass for his efforts. Rob Nichols would crash coming out of the first turn, but fellow racer Brandon Lowery would slow to help the uninjured driver off the track. There were nothing but smiles on all of the drivers and fans faces after the race was over. Now it was time for race cars to get back on the track.
The first feature of the night would be the modifieds. The last time the modified division was run at the Winchester Speedway they gave us an exciting race, that included a last turn pass by Keith Jackson for the win. What the fans would see tonigh was another exciting race! Mike Corbin would jump out to the early lead from the pole position, but heartbreak would ensue as smoke poured from the rear of Corbin’s car on the second lap causing him to pull off of the speedway. Cody Oliver would now take the lead, until a caution on lap 3 would slow the field. Once the race restarted, Mike Franklin would challenge Oliver for the lead. They would battle side by side, but Franklin would pull ahead of Oliver and take command of the field. As we made it to the halfway point in the race Franklin had begun to build up a sizeable lead, but Keith Jackson was starting to make a charge to the front from his tenth place starting position. Jackson was now battling Cody Williams for the second position. As the race neared the end, we would see both Franklin and Jackson navigate their way through lap traffic, but that couldn’t stall the momentum of Jackson, as he pulled up to the rear of Franklin just as they crossed
under the white flag. Jackson would put a “slider” on Franklin in the 3rd and 4th turns. As the two drag raced to the finish line it would be Keith Jackson your winner, followed by a very close Mike Franklin. Once again this division didn’t let the fans down. What an exciting finish for the second straight race! Keith Jackson has now won two straight events, by only leading a total of about ¾ of a lap!
Next up was the limited late model division. Scott Palmer and Kyle Lear would battle side by side, until Palmer edged just ahead of Lear. We would see several cautions slow the field throughout the 25 lap main event. After each restart we would see Palmer hold onto his lead while Kyle Lear and James Lichliter battled side by side for the second position. It seemed early on that it would take a lap or two for Lear’s car to gain its momentum. As Lear would start to make a challenge for the lead each time, the caution would come out. The last caution would come out with 5 laps to go. This time Lear would challenge Palmer for the lead from the start. We would see Lear “slide job” Palmer for the lead, but it didn’t stick and Palmer would retake the lead. But Lear wasn’t finished yet! He would once again “slide” Palmer for the lead and this time it stuck and Lear would edge ahead. Lear would go on to hold the lead and take the win. In victory lane a very happy Kyle Lear, would brag on how great the track surface was. He would go on to say “There was a low, middle and high groove tonight. You couldn’t ask for a better track to race on.”
The third event of the night was the anticipated 4th Annual Sam Crouch Memorial. First I want to thank everyone who helped out with and donated to this event! We would see Brian Booze and Jeremy Tinsman battle from the front row. With Tinsman coming out on top and take the early lead. The caution flag would wave on lap 3 due to Michael Carter coming to a slow stop on the speedway. As the race restarted, Tony Catlett would make a move around Booze for second and begin to chase our leader. As this was going on, there was a battle of the number 7’s going on for third and fourth. Brian Booze and Rob Nichols both in number 7 machines would battle hard for the third position. Nichols would make the move around Booze on the outside to take the position over. As the race progressed, Tinsman would have to hold off challenges from Catlett. While this was going on, a hard charging Buddy Wilson was making his way to the front from the 19th starting position to the 5th position. After a restart from a lap 21 caution, contact would happen between our leaders. Nichols would have to take evasive action to miss the first and second place cars. Once the dust settled, Nichols would now inherit the lead. One last caution on the 23rd lap couldn’t stop Nichols from taking the win. This would be his 3rd straight Sam Crouch Memorial Victory!
The final race of the night would be our enduro division. We would see Randy Linaburg grab the early lead. Hard racing for the lead between Randy Linaburg and Jason Wilkins would allow Cody Sumption to charge past the two cars. Sumption would go on to win his fourth race of the season.
We want to thank everyone who attended last night’s events. We also want to thank Winchester Scrap for adding a $100 to each divisions winner’s purse. Other notable mentions about the memorial race are: the 10th place finishing car was awarded $110 in memory of Roland Cox. Also, every car running on the 12th lap would receive an extra $20 in honor of Maddie who recently lost her battle with cancer. We have seen several great weeks of racing here at the Winchester Speedway. Make sure to like our
Facebook and Twitter pages for all of our up to date information about the speedway. We look forward to seeing you next week for the Dillbuilt Automotive Night!
