Malta, NY – Justin Stone was born around race cars. The third-generation driver grew up around their sound, their smells, the action, and of course – trips to victory lane.
Friday night he proved something that really did not need to be proven … he paid attention all of those years.
Stone picked up his second win of the season in the DIRTcar Modified division at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway Friday night. It was his third career win at the track.
The Ronca brothers – Don and Rich, brought the DIRTcar Modified field to the green with the field going right back under the yellow as a melee ensued after Josh Masterson slowed and those behind him had no place to go. Jack Speshock and the current points leader Matt DeLorenzo were collected. DeLorenzo continued on while Speshock went to the pits on the hook.
The second attempt at the start would see Rich Ronca leading the field down to complete lap number one with older brother Don in second and Brendan Darrah third. Darrah’s top three run took a serious hit when he bobbled in turn two and lost numerous positions. He settled into eighth.
Justin Stone meanwhile was on the charge. He took over second by lap five and immediately began to challenge Rich Ronca for the lead. Brian Calabrese brought out the caution flag on lap seven when he came to a stop in turn four.
When racing resumed Stone held the lead with Jack Lehner. The caution flag waved again when Dylan Grogan and Andrew Buff made contact in turn three, with Buff spinning.
On the restart Stone controlled the lead, this time with Rich Ronca. Lehner, Marc Johnson and Neal Stratton were following. Within a few laps Lehner would take over the second position from Ronca and set his sights on Stone. At the same time Felix Roy moved into the top five.
Johnson made his way past Ronca on lap 19 with Stone and Lehner still pacing the field. Behind the former track champion, Roy took over the fourth position. With ten laps to go Stone’s lead over Lehner was just shy of a straightaway. While Stone was entering heavy lapped traffic, Lehner was free of traffic.
The red flag waved on lap 27 when Nick Perez got upside down on the inside of turn two. DeLorenzo was also involved. Both drivers were done for the night.
When racing resumed Rich Ronca and Mahaney tangled in turn four. On the restart Stone and Lehner ran one-two, however, Roy moved to third with Matt Sheppard and Johnson battling for fourth.
In the end Stone held on for the win over Lehner, Roy, Sheppard and Johnson. Lehner, Darrah and Stratton won the heat races for the 26-car field.
Derrick McGrew, Jr. won the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature event. Nick Lussier took the lead on lap five and held it until lap 11 when McGrew took over. With about ten laps to go defending track champion Tim Hartman, Jr. moved into the second position.
In the end no one could catch McGrew, who picked up the feature event win over Hartman, Connor Crane, Phil Arnold and Mike Ballestero. Heat races for the 33-car field were won by Chad Gregory, Ballestero, Katrina LeClaire and Alex Palmer-Sawyer.
Caden Dumblewski won the 32 Lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event. In lieu of running double features (due to rain on May 29th), the drivers elected to run one, 32 lap feature event offering double points.
Chuck McSpirit led the event early as Brandon Emigh and Caden Dumblewski pressed from second and third. Dumblewski pulled alongside of McSpirit on lap five and a lap later secured the lead. Emigh followed to second.
Rich Crane slowed out of turn four on lap nine to bring out the race’s first caution period. On the restart the top two remained the same with Chuck Dumblewski taking third. McSpirit spun on lap 14, forcing another caution period. After a caution period on lap 19, Dumblewski held the lead with Emigh and his dad following.
In the end Caden Dumblewski would hold on for the win over Emigh, Chuck Dumblewski, Kyle Hoard and Shane Henderson. The DIRTcar Pro Stock heat races were won by Caden Dumblewski and Crane. The Four States Enterprises Dash was won by Emigh.
Devon Palmer won the Limited Sportsman feature event. The win was worth $1,000 courtesy of J&K Trucking & Excavating. Palmer picked up the win over Alex Smith, William Lussier, Jr., Kyle Lanfear and Nick Arnold.
Colten Emigh won the held over Limited Sportsman feature event. The event was held over due to rain on May 29th. Emigh dominated the event to pick up the win and the $500 bonus from Burch Motors. Nick Arnold finished second with James Galarneau third, point leader Alex Smith fourth and William Lussier, Jr. fifth.
Tyler Irwin won the 20 lap regularly scheduled Street Stock event. Irwin charged through the field early and once out front, could not be caught. The field had one more chance at him and that was on a late race restart. Irwin pulled away on the restart to claim the win over Andrew Fitzgerald, Josh Bussino, Shane Wetherington and Gary O’Brien.
Damian Ward won the held over Street Stock feature event. The event was held over due to rain on May 29th. Ward beat out Matt Mosher for the win. Mosher finished second with Tyler Irwin third, Chris Murray fourth and Gary O’Brien fifth.
Glenn Engstrom won the DIRTcar 4-Cylinder feature event. Engstrom picked up the win over Joe Warren, Ken Tourville, Jeremy Brownell and Ben Ladd. Engstrom was the top Dual Cam car while Ladd was the top Single Cam.
The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action on Friday, July 3rd with all weekly divisions in action plus fireworks. Pit gates open at 3pm, grandstand gates open at 5pm with hot laps rolling off at 6pm. Racing is set to begin at 7pm.
