6.27.14 USMTS Modifieds Results

GREENVILLE, Texas—The United States Modified Touring Series visited the Superbowl Speedway Friday night, and after a wild back-and-forth 40-lap feature race, Stormy Scott visited victory lane for the 11th time this season.

“I don’t know what it is about Texas, but we always seem to do pretty well here,” Scott said. “We have a lot of fun here and the fans here are great.”

The track was fast, but getting things going early on in the main event was tough with 28 cars packed together like sardines on the challenging quarter-mile clay oval.

Two early cautions waved before the first lap could be completed, the second of which sent polesitter and local favorite Wesley Veal to the back of the pack for the restart.

That moved defending USMTS national champ Rodney Sanders to the pole for the next restart, but just after completing the first lap a broken lift arm forced Sanders to quickly exit the track in turn 1, bringing out a third yellow flag and ending his shot at a win.

After that, it was non-stop action from the front of the field to the back.

Chad Davis inherited the top spot and set a blistering pace while twin brothers Stormy Scott and Johnny Scott chased the youngster from Tulsa, Okla.

Stormy Scott, who came into the night as the S&S Fishing & Rental Southern Region points leader, slipped past Davis for the lead with 16 laps in the books and Johnny Scott followed into second two laps later.

From there, it was a sibling rivalry to the finish with Stormy Scott maintaining a slight advantage over his younger brother and taking a four-car-length cushion to the checkered flag.

Chris Henigan rolled off 14th for the start of the race and methodically picked off cars to garner a third-place finish, but the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award went to Clyde Dunn Jr. who finished fourth after starting 17th.

Not to be outdone, USMTS Rookie of the Year contender Cade Dillard passed 13 cars en route to a fifth-place finish with Davis hanging on for sixth.

Chase Jupe, Chris Brown, Colby Smith and Philip Houston completed the top 10.

Action moves to the Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla., on Saturday night, where Stormy Scott has taken the last two victories with the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by Swan Energy.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30. Limited Mods and Hobby Stocks will also be in action.

The Southern Oklahoma Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.7 mile east of I-35 (exit 29) on US 70, then 1.8 miles south on US 77. For more information call 405-627-1766 or click www.southernoklahomaspeedway.com to visit the track’s official website.
