Pierce, Wills, Bouchelle, DeVault, and Martin Cap Off June in Airport Speedway Victory Lane
By Kasey Kreider

Airport Speedway finished the first half of the racing season in style on Saturday night, with the annual Mike Sommers Memorial Bike Race and Luau Night at the racetrack. The bike races – held for kids under 10 years old in honor of the former track announcer – took place during intermission. This gave Airport’s young fans a rare opportunity to be on the speedway during the race night, while having fun and making memories with friends and family.

Once the bike races concluded, attention shifted back to the regular stars and cars of the New Castle bullring. For the second time in as many weeks and the fourth time this season, Robert Pierce put his No. 24 Hyper Chassis into Wingless 600 victory lane, continuing his strong start to the 2025 campaign.

The New Castle native started fifth in the feature event, while last year’s Bridgeport champion Anthony Tramontana led the field to green. After just two corners, Pierce had moved into the top two spots by rolling through the bottom of turns 1 and 2, passing all the drivers jockeying for position in the middle and upper grooves.

Tramontana led the first two laps before a caution slowed the pack on lap three. Off the restart, Cameron Bellinger moved swiftly from fourth to the lead, passing Tramontana, Pierce, and Nate Freed to take control.

Bellinger maintained control for several laps but was soon caught by Freed, who advanced from eighth on the grid to the runner-up spot. On lap 13, Freed dove low into turn 1 to take the lead from Bellinger, but spun just one corner later after contact with a lapped car.

Bellinger tried to avoid Freed’s stopped car but clipped it, damaging his front end. During the caution period, both Freed and Bellinger made contact again, forcing both drivers out of the event.

Inheriting the lead was Pierce, who held off Tramontana over the final laps to claim victory. Tramontana finished second in Bob Burgess’ No. 80, with Jace Marshall completing the podium. Connor Gross moved up from the B-Main to finish fourth, and Abel Engler rounded out the top five.

New Egypt, NJ’s Shea Wills put familiar No. 90 back in Airport’s winner’s circle in Saturday’s 270 A-Main event. The 2018 Sportsman track champion and wingless sprint car ace bested a strong field, including two-time 2025 feature winner Tyler Grau.

Grau quickly moved from sixth to second, challenging Wills after a lap 7 restart. Grau briefly took the lead in turn 1, but Wills fought back immediately and reclaimed the advantage. Wills then steadily stretched his lead to two or three car lengths, holding off challenges from Grau and Dylan Pence.

Wills crossed the finish line two car lengths ahead of Grau, with Pence finishing third and Billy Gray fourth. Anthony Kane made an impressive climb from the back of the field to take fifth.

Chase Bouchelle and Austin Miller, the only Sportsman entries signed for competition, also raced in the 270 A-Main. Bouchelle was the higher finisher, earning his first Sportsman win of the season and marking the eighth different Sportsman winner at Airport this year.

Dylan DeVault made it back-to-back wins in the 125 feature, running a fast and mistake-free race from sixth starting spot to victory. Pole sitter Bobby Bracall led the opening lap before Dylan Yeingst took over after a three-wide battle on a lap 2 restart.

Yeingst’s lead was short-lived, as he was penalized for jumping a restart on lap 3, putting four-time 2025 winner David Kirkner in the top spot. DeVault stayed close and passed Kirkner on the backstretch after the green flag dropped again.

DeVault was the fourth different leader in the first four laps but would remain in front to win his fifth Airport race this season and third in the 125 class. Kirkner finished second, Steve Simmons third, with Bracall and Mikey Ratchford rounding out the top five.

The Restricted Wingless 600s ran their fifth race of the year at Airport Speedway. Clayton’s Rayce Martin earned his fourth victory of the season. Heat winner Chase Bouchelle challenged Martin early but Martin pulled away after a caution to dominate the race.

Bouchelle finished second, Mason Dawson third, and Amari Robinson fourth.

Airport Speedway will take a break for the 4th of July weekend and return on Saturday, July 12 with another points night for the four regular weekly classes. The Restricted Wingless 600s and Junior Sprints will be back in action, gearing up for the Hyper Racing 600 Speedweek event on Monday, July 14.
