BREWERTON, NY – The start of Donath Motorworx CNY Speedweek for the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints (ESS) kicked off on Wednesday at the Brewerton Speedway with a new face in Victory Lane. Mike Mahaney, of King Ferry, N.Y., took advantage of the opportunity to drive Doug Emery’s second car as he parked the No. 33m on the fronstretch for his first ever career series win.
Mahaney bested 37 other drivers for the win the Mach 1 Chassis 25-lap A-Main at a track he had previously called home in the Modified division. Mahaney earned $2,000 for his efforts on Wednesday night. The win also earned points for all campaigners in the NAPA Auto Parts US Tour and the SUNY Canton series.
“This is unbelievable,” said Mahaney after his win. “Doug Emery gave me a great car. This thing is awesome when it gets slick like this. All those years of racing Modified here really paid off. I have to thank my mom and dad for that for putting me through all those years of practice really paid off tonight in a Sprint Car. It’s really cool to finally get my first win in one.”
Mitch Brown jumped out the lead from the pole position at the green. Brown worked the high-line while being chased by Justin Barger and Mahaney in the early laps of the main-event.
Caution came on lap seven when Dylan Swiernik spun in turn one collecting Bryan Howland. Both drivers were able to continue. A double-file restart placed Brown on the outside groove with Barger lining up next to him.
Brown kept the advantage with Barger losing the second position to Mahaney on lap nine. At that point it became a battle at the front between Brown and Mahaney with Sammy Reakes also trying to apply pressure as he worked into third.
Mahaney dove to the bottom of turns one and two to take the lead as they exited the corner on lap 15. Brown tried to regroup to hang with him on the topside but he couldn’t make it work allowing Mahaney to pull away. Reakes took second a lap later.
“This car was good everywhere,” stated Mahaney. “I could go anywhere, top, bottom, middle, it didn’t matter. I was just trying to go where they weren’t. That bottom lane, if I could down there and be right on it, it was there. The car was good.”
Swiernik brought one final caution on lap 18 as he hopped the cushion in turn four and went off the racing surface. Mahaney now had to deal with one final double-file restart which he handled masterfully. Reakes gave him just enough room on the bottom to keep the lead.
Mahaney went on to lead the final few laps with Reakes and Danny Varin battling for second. Varin ended up getting by Reakes on lap 21 to take over the second position after a three lap fight. He got close to Mahaney but couldn’t make the pass for the lead. His second place finish matches his best ESS run of the season.
“We had an awesome car tonight,” stated Varin. “This car has been really good to us. We really felt like we had a shot at it. I locked them up there one time, I didn’t know he was going to the top. We lost our momentum there but the car was great.”
Steve Poirier, the defending Speedweek champion, finished third after starting in 12th spot. Poirier shot around the top of Reakes on the final lap to take the spot.
“I had plenty of good opportunities on the restarts,” mentioned Poirier. “The track was really racey. There was a middle, the top was pretty far but you could make it work sometimes. We made a couple of moves in traffic without any trouble. I’m happy with my night.”
Reakes ended up finishing in the fourth while Mark Smith ended the night in fifth.
