6.5.14 USMTS Modifieds Results

FAIRMONT, Minn.—Rodney Sanders did it again Thursday night, winning his second main event in as many nights and claiming his seventh USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by Swan Energy feature win of the 2014 campaign.

Despite pressure for most of the race from Stormy Scott and a late challenge from Zack VanderBeek, Sanders parlayed his front row starting spot into a wire-to-wire victory to collect the $2,000 winner’s share of the prize money.

Dereck Ramirez gave chase for the first ten laps until Scott claimed the second spot and went after the leader.

Meanwhile, Zack VanderBeek was slicing his way to the front from his 17th starting position, moving ahead of Kelly Shryock for fourth on lap 14, and then Ramirez for second on lap 20.

With two laps to go in the 30-lapper, VanderBeek edged in front of Scott but ran out of time and laps as he followed two car lengths behind Sanders as they crossed the finish line.

Scott and Shryock held on for third and fourth while Daniel Hilsabeck got by Ramirez with two laps remaining to claim the fifth spot.

Mike Stearns was seventh in his first United States Modified Touring Series start of the season, rookie Jeremy Houle passed six cars en route to an eight-place finish, Johnny Scott was ninth and Bryan Rowland rounded out the top ten.

While VanderBeek garnered his fifth Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award of the year, Sanders recorded USMTS career win number 25 which broke a tie with VanderBeek.

Sanders is now tied with Johnny Scott on the all-time wins list and one behind Stormy Scott’s 26 checkered flags.

Just a short drive west and south of Fairmont, you’ll find the USMTS Modifieds dishing up the dirt again at the Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, on Friday night for the track’s 2014 season opener.

This will be the first race for new promoter Dereck Van Der Brink, so this is a perfect opportunity for fans and drivers to come out and support a fellow racer who is investing his time and money to keep the lights on at this historic track.

Gates open at 5:00 with hot laps at 7:00 and the first green flag at 7:30.

Adult grandstand tickets are $17, kids ages 6-12 are $5 and children 5 and under get in for free. Pit passes are $35.

Fans can find $2-off coupons at Casey’s General Store locations in Hull, Rock Rapids, Sibley and Luverne, Minn.

The Iron Man Challenge featuring USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods, plus USRA Hobby Stocks and Rapid Speedway’s Sportsman division round out the five-class card.

The Rapid Speedway is a semi-banked 3/8-mile dirt oval located 0.5 mile east of US 75 on SR 9, then 0.5 mile south on South Tama St. (400 S. Tama St., Rock Rapids, IA 51246). For more information call (712) 470-1850 or (712) 472-3742 or visit www.rockrapidsspeedway.com online.

Less than an hour east from Rock Rapids, the final night of this week’s swing will be Saturday for the debut of the USMTS at the I-90 Speedway in Hartford, S.D.
