6.5.21 Genesee Speedway Results
Rich Vleck, BATAVIA, NY, (June 5, 2021)- Jeremy Wonderling is known as “Mr. Excitement”, but on Saturday Night, Wonderling made sure that the battle for the win in the Late Model Feature was anything but.
On a warm and windy night, Wonderling, of Wellsville, drove away to win the 25-lap event by over six seconds for his second decisive victory in as many weeks at Genesee Speedway. Wonderling has been on a roll as of late, and he picked up right where he left off as he drove off from Doug Ricotta on the start and never looked back.
“I don’t think this car could have been any better,” admitted Wonderling in Victory Lane. “I told my guys earlier tonight that I wanted to see Doug Ricotta win. He’s got a lot of people here in the stands but I wasn’t going to just give it to him. He had to earn it.”
The lone caution of the event occurred on lap four, after that Wonderling set sail on the field while Ricotta stayed socially distanced in second. The best battle on the track was for third as Jimmy Johnson drove up to take that position and fend off a fast JJ Mazur, who settled for fourth. Bill Holmes was also quick throughout the event, rounding out the top five.
When Noah Walker had the number 1 pill drawn for his heat race starting spot, there was a feeling that tonight might be his night to capture his first career Sportsman feature win; that premonition would come to fruition when the checkered flags fell at the end of the 25-lap event.
Walker, of North Tonawanda, led all 25-laps to earn his first trip to Victory Lane. Walker used the top line throughout the event, but in the closing laps had to fend off point leader Phil Vigneri III to finish off the job.
“Finally,” declared Walker in Victory Lane. “We’ve been so close and had so much bad luck. I tried to make the car as wide as possible, to be honest. Last night (at Ransomville), we led 21 laps then lost it but I wasn’t going to let that happen tonight.”
Walker had to endure two late-race restarts with Vigneri diving to the inside entering turn 1, but Walker held true on the outside and allowed his momentum to carry him back in front of the No. 12v. Vigneri would settle for second, while Dave Conant made a late-move on Kyle Richner to steal away third place. Cameron Tuttle rounded out the top five.
Tommy Kemp scored his second win of the season in the Street Stocks, leading wire-to-wire to claim the 20-lap event. Kemp, of Castile, used the tacky high line throughout the race to keep the field at bay, but in the closing laps, unbeknownst to the leader, the No. 28 began to show smoke as he broke his left front shock mount and forced the veteran to limp his ride to the finish with a very loose racecar. Brandon Sherwood would fend off John Zimmerman down the stretch for his third-straight runner-up finish. Damian Long and Dan Schulz rounded out the top five.
The NY6A Micro Sprint Tour were on hand Saturday for their 2021 season opener and with lap times in to the 16 second range, Johnny Smith ran away with the 20-lap feature to claim the feature victory. Smith, who flew up from Florida on Friday, made the most of his first time racing at Genesee as he dominated both the heat and the feature. The driver of the No. 4s used the high side to hustle away from Tim Lotz and Jordan Noody, who rounded out the podium.
Dante Mancuso notched his third Mini Stock Feature win of the year in just his fourth start at his hometown track in 2021. Mancuso led all 15 laps while the battles behind him were furious throughout. A wild moment on lap 11 saw second-place Brandon Shepard flip on the frontstretch after a mechanical failure on his No. 8s. While under that caution, point leader Andy Schumaker, who had inherited the runner-up spot, would have to pit with a flat right front tire and would not return. Andrew Gayton would take over second and hang on for the runner-up finish, while Rocco Conte charged up to third. James Gayton and Brad Whiteside rallied to round out the top five.
Jake Bansmer captured his fifth victory of the year in a caution-free Novice Sportsman Feature. Bansmer, of East Aurora, had to charge his way to the front, moving in to second around Tyler Guzzardi on lap six for second and then made the move underneath Allison Dewitt for the race lead on lap nine to get himself out in front for good. Dewitt would hold off Guzzardi for her third runner-up showing of the season.
The Bandit Feature saw point leader Alexis Traxler capture her fifth win of the season in perhaps her most dominating performance of the year as she led from the start and won by over a half-track over Jonathan Logsdon. Ian Paul rounded out the top three finishers.
Over 90 cars filled the pit area on a night with temperatures nearing 90 as well. Next Saturday, all six weekly classes will be back in action starting at 6:00 p.m. Genesee Speedway is located on Rt. 5 in Batavia at the Genesee County Fairgrounds.
