6.5.21 Wayne County Speedway Results

Written By: Randy Worrell

ORRVILLE – Saturday’s Fast Five racing program featuring the second round of the four-race King of the County sprint car challenge, felt like the symbolical beginning of a more familiar landscape at the Wayne County Speedway near Orrville.

For starters, the season’s first glimpse of summer greeted an overflow crowd at the ultra-fast 3-8 mile oval, while four fresh faces dotted victory lane for the first time in 2021.

Strasburg’s Henry Malcuit wired the field in the Pine Tree Towing and Recovery 30-lap sprint car main event, while Doug Drown captured his first Malcuit Tavern super late model victory of the season. Although no stranger to any speedplant’s winner’s circle, Mansfield’s Kyle Moore scored his inaugural win of the season in the McKenzie Concrete super stock main event with Doug Hensel posting a popular victory in the Joyride Transport mini stock feature. Moore doubled down by claiming his fourth win of the season in the Corbon Ammunition Modified night capper.

The 22-car King of the County sprint car field was the first to hit the racy paper-clipped shaped oval, with Nick Patterson and Malcuit occupying the front row. Before one lap could be scored, however, the yellow waved for seventh and ninth-starting Trey Jacobs and Dylan Kingan, respectively, with the duo making contacting on the backstretch which also collected Chris Myers and Wyatt Zimmerman. None of the four machines were able to restart the main event.

When the green replaced the yellow, Malcuit bolted to an early advantage, with Patterson, Jason Dolick, Broc Martin, Findlay’s Ricky Peterson and Dean Jacobs in his late 1990’s teal and white throwback-schemed No. 1F in pursuit. By lap 12, Malcuit’s lead was nearly a straightaway, before Martin disposed of Patterson and Dolick, with Peterson moving into contention as well utilizing his now-customary high-line.

Heavy lapped traffic slowed Malcuit’s run, though temporarily, as Martin and Peterson waged a torrid battle for second during laps 14 through 22. As Malcuit diced his way in and around the pack of slower cars to open up and 15-car advantage which enabled the second-generation fledgling star to record his second career win at the WCS, and a $3,500 payday. Martin edged Peterson at the stripe for second, with Dolick, Dean Jacobs, Danny Mumaw, Shawn Hubler, first-time WCS competitor Justin Clark, 16th-starting former motocross standout Zach Ames, and Greg Mitchell rounding out the top-10.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit, but this feels really good to get this win tonight,” said Malcuit alongside his Red Malcuit Inc. black and white No. 70. “First of all, the track was awesome all night long and l could move around anywhere from top to bottom. I was just trying to figure out where all the lapped cars were going to go, but my guys had the car so good that l could move around.”

Round three of the King of the County series will return to WCS on Sunday, July 4.

Larry Bellman and J. R. Gentry brought the 14-car 25-lap super late model main event to the green next, with Gentry racing out to an early lead before a five-car melee in turn 1 slowed the field.

When the green reappeared, Gentry again blasted to the point, with a fast-closing Doug Drown, fresh off his first victory of the season at Attica Raceway Park on Friday, Ryan Markham, Cody Scott, a Friday victor at the Hilltop Speedway, Bellman, and Mitch Caskey in tow.

Drown, in his freshly-adorned No. 777, wrestled the top spot away from Gentry on lap 3, with Caskey joining Gentry and Markham in an entertaining battle for second by circuit 10. Caskey, however, split both Gentry and Markham exiting turn 2 on lap 12 and set sail for Drown.

Caskey closed to the back bumper of “Hammer Down” Drown on lap 19, but couldn’t get any closer the remaining six circuits, with Gentry, Scott, and Markham rounding out the top 5.

“We changed numbers (from our No. 12 to a family-tradition No. 777) this week and it may have changed our luck and we may stick with it now,” said Drown beside his Ely Road Reel Company mount in victory lane. “My brother was signaling me to go to the bottom late in the race, but l never really felt comfortable down there when l tried it earlier. I never saw anyone’s nose under me, so it worked out for us.”

The 20-lap Modified main was next to hit Orrville’s Historic Oval, with folks wondering if Moore could make it nine consecutive victories from his outside second row starting slot. Not only did the “Mansfield Madman” complete the feat, including his fourth victory this season at WCS, the pilot of the white No.1 dominated the event aside from a few close calls from third-starting D.J. Cline. Although Cline closed to the rear bumper of Moore by lap 11, Moore raced to a straightaway victory, with Alan Atkinson finishing third, Bruce Miller fourth, and Casey Butler racing home fifth.

The 12-lap mini stock hit feature hit the ground running with Brandon James and Dustin Bedlion on the front row, but a scary incident halted the action as Clayton Evans dumped his No. 54 machine in turn 1 on the opening lap which brought out the red. A lengthy delay ensued as rescue crew burnt spilled fuel from the racetrack, but Evans made the longest walk in motorsports back to the pit area a little lighter in the wallet but otherwise unscathed.

When action resumed, James took command before mechanical woes forced him pitside three laps later, with Hensel taking the point as 11th-starting Kyle Petit hustled his way to the front, eventually pasting himself to the back bumper of Hensel by lap 8. Petit’s charge came up a half car length at the stripe, however, with Ryan Carder, Johnny Bruce, Sr. and David Keagy completing the top 5.

In the nightcap, Moore, who had shown speed all season long in the Daugherty Racing No. 21D, finally shook the monkey from his back and claimed his first victory of 2021 in the 15-lap super stock finale.

Moore inherited the top spot on lap 3 from Brandon Morrow who suffered mechanical woes, and raced to a comfortable advantage by lap 8. Paul Holmes won a wild battle for the runner-up spot over Matt Shroyer, Chase Alexander, and don Rutt.

Wayne County Speedway will be idle this Saturday, but will return to action on Monday, June 14, with the annual All Star Circuit of Champions’ Ohio Sprint Speedweek stop.
