6.6.14 Albany Saratoga Speedway Results
Malta, NY – Albany-Saratoga Speedway returned to action Friday night after losing a week to the wrath of Mother Nature. When all was said and done on a jam packed and emotional night, a Garden State Jet, a Flying Squirrel and a familiar hot shoe graced victory lane in the three major divisions.
Sussex, New Jersey’s Brett Hearn continued to prove why he is called the Jersey Jet as he picked up DIRTcar Modified career win number 112 at the four tenths of a mile oval. Hearn’s fifth consecutive win pulls him to within one of tying the track record, a record he set during the 2002 season.
The Sportsman division competed in the 1st Annual Mark K. Hughes Memorial event. The 26 lap event would see Rocky Warner take the $1,100 top prize. Rob Yetman picked up career win number 18 at the track. The win moves him into the top five on the all-time feature winners list. Other winners during the night were Colin Bokus in the Limited Sportsman feature event that was held over from May 23rd, Pete Jeske in the regularly scheduled Limited Sportsman event, Frank Monroe (Street Stock) and Steve Ryan (Four Cylinder).
Matt Depew and C.G. Morey led the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event to the green with Depew taking the early lead. Morey would slip over the banking in turn one on the start which dropped him from the top ten. Rookie Brett Wright, JaMike Sowle, Don Ronca and Mike Perrotte would complete the top five.
Keith Flach would move into fifth on lap three and then within four laps was hounding Ronca for fourth. The Flach and Ronca battle side by side, back and forth battle would continue until lap 15 when Ronca firmly regained control of the position. Flach would regain his momentum and on lap 17 would pass Ronca for fourth and then immediately took over the third position from Sowle.
While leader Depew was opening a large lead, Hearn was making his way through the field. After starting 15th Hearn was up to the 13th position by lap five, ninth by lap eight and seventh by lap 15. Hearn would take sixth from Jeremy Wilder on lap 16 and the fifth from Ronca on lap 19. Mike Johnson would follow Hearn past Ronca for sixth.
By lap 20 Depew had a seemingly comfortable half straightaway lead over Wright. Hearn and Johnson were continuing their charge however. The duo would make their way past Sowle on lap 20 for fourth and fifth respectfully. Wright meanwhile was starting to close the gap between himself and Depew. As lap 23 clicked off the lap counter Wright was five car lengths behind Depew and a lap later would pull underneath Depew’s Kalme Logging and Firewood sponsored machine. The pair were event at the completion of lap 25 with Wright taking the lead a half lap later.
The positions within the top five began to shuffle fiercely on lap 26 with Hearn emerging as the second place driver and Johnson third. The race’s only caution flag would slow the field on lap 28 when Brian Gleason came to a stop in turn four.
That opportunity was all Hearn needed and on the restart he would take the lead. Johnson would follow into second on lap 31 but he could not catch Hearn who cruised home for the win. Johnson would finish second with Flach third, Wright fourth and Wilder edging Depew at the finish line for fifth. Heat races for the 29 car field were won by Floyd Billington, Sowle and Ronca.
“This is a tribute to the hard work the guys are doing in the shop and what Kevin Cross brings to this race team,” Hearn said. “This is just phenomenal really, the car handles so good – it couldn’t be any more fun. Thanks to the people at Fox Shocks for this package that is so awesome here, Madsen Motorsports, Don Kruger for his support, 417 Bus Lines and Cedar Peaks. We have a great team and they are working really hard to stay on it.”
The 1st Annual Mark K. Hughes Memorial 26 lap Sportsman event would see Nick Lussier and Jack Swinton lead the field to the green with Lussier taking the early lead. Lussier would hold the lead until lap three when he gave way to Dave Baranowski. Baranowski led until lap 18 when Warner put the West End Towing and Repair number 79 out front. Warner would pick up the win over Baranowski, Joey Scarborough, Connor Cleveland and Derrick McGrew. A total of 35 Sportsman drivers entered the event.

Dave DePaulo and Walt Brownell led the DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event to the green with Brownell taking the early lead. Bernie Companion would spin in turn one on lap bringing out the caution flag. The spin also collected Bill Smith.
Brownell would lead on the restart with DePaulo and Dan Older, Sr. following. Yetman, who started eighth, would take third from Older on lap three. The caution flag would slow the field on lap five when Brandon Emigh spun in turn two. Brownell would lead Yetman and Older on the restart with Yetman under Brownell by lap seven. Yetman would take the lead on lap nine with Brownell falling to second.
Yetman would survive the final two restarts and lead the rest of the way to bring home the win over Kenny Martin, Jr., Byron Wescott, Brownell and Chuck Dumblewski. Heat races for the 20 car field were won by Brownell and Wescott.
Emily Quinn would take the early lead in the held over Limited Sportsman feature event. Quinn would lead until lap 10 when she pushed up in turn two which allowed Colin Bokus to get underneath. Bokus would take the lead a lap later and pull away for the win. Pete Jeske finished second with Quinn third, Zach Daurio fourth and Ricky Davis fifth.
Jack Bublak and Anthony Alger battled at the start of the regularly scheduled 15 lap Limited Sportsman feature event. The duo battled side by side until Bublak secured the lead on lap four. Bublak would remain out front until a lap six caution for stopped Ron Casey would set up a restart. On the restart Jeske would take the lead over Bublak. Jeske would lead the rest of the way to take the win over Bublak, Alger, Rob Maxon and Ken Conroy. Heat races for the 24 car field were won by Jeske, Bublak and Alger.
Frank Monroe picked up the win in the Don Don’s Delights Street Stock feature event. Monroe would take the lead from early race leader Chase Aussicker and lead the remainder of the way to bring home the win over Scott Lawrence, Aussicker, Yule Cook and Jason Meltz. A total of 19 drivers entered the event.
Steve Ryan would put his Pro Built Chassis number four in victory lane for the fourth time this season in the Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinder division. Robert Garney would finish second with Elmer Montville third, Dave LaBarge fourth and Ben Grant fifth. A total of 12 drivers entered the event.
The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action this Friday night with NYSSCA Night. All divisions will be in action including the Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders. There will also be Hot Rods on display. Racing is set to begin at 7pm.
