SANDBERG COASTS TO FIRST CAREER IMCA SPORT COMPACT VICTORY
Contact among the leaders allow Ken Sandberg to slip into the lead when the green flag waved in the IMCA Sport Compact feature. As Sandberg pulled away, Thompson and Schuh continued to race hard for second. Rookie Braydee Hanson made it a three car battle as Sandberg started to drastically slow on the track. Sandberg hung onto his lead and pulled away once more as Thompson, Schuh and Hanson bounced off each other racing for second. This hard racing allowed Craig Kastner and Alex Thompson join the battle. However, when the checkered flag waved, Craig Kastner made a last lap pass to finish fourth ahead of Paul Schuh. Braydee Hanson finished third behind second place Alex Thompson. Ken Sandberg who coasted across the finish line due to low fuel pressure, picked up his first career IMCA Sport Compact feature victory.
GARTNER JR GOES BACK-TO-BACK IN MANDAN
Wishek’s Curt Michaelsohn grabbed the lead from pole sitter Karlie Hoerner in the Hobby Stock feature. John Gartner Jr quickly passed Hoerner, bringing Chris Welk and Dylan Sandberg with him. Hoerner had her hands full with Nathan Messer as they raced hard for fifth. As Michaelsohn started to distance himself from the field, Sandberg challenged Welk for third. As the laps wound down, Gartner started searching for different racing lines. Finding speed along the high side, Gartner cut down Michaelsohn’s lead. With a few laps remaining, white smoke started to billow from underneath the front of Gartner’s race car. AS the white flag waved, Michaelsohn and Gartner were side by side for the win. Racing out of turn four, John Gartner Jr held off Curt Michaelsohn to win back-to-back victories at Dacotah Speedway. Chris Welk finished third while Dylan Sandberg crossed the finish line fourth. Terry Davenport rounded out the top five.
PAPKE EDGES WIEST AT THE LINE
Travis Martin and Mike Dowling led the field to the green flag in the INEX Legends feature. Dowling quickly grabbed the lead but had his hands full with Austin Wiest and Donavin Wiest. Finding speed along the guardrail, Austin Wiest slipped by Dowling, bringing Donavin Wiest with him to take the lead on lap three. Austin Wiest’s lead was short lived as defending track champion, Donavin Wiest, grabbed the lead a few laps later. Austin Wiest held strong and remained on Donavin Wiest’s rear bumper but it didn’t take long for points leader Drew Papke to catch the leaders. With only a few laps to go, it was a three car battle for the win. Using the high line to his advantage, Papke pulled along side Donavin Wiest as the white flag waved. They raced side by side for the win and when the checkered flag waved, Drew Papke denied Donavin Wiest of his first Dacotah Speedway victory of the season. Austin Wiest finished third while Mike Dowling finished fourth. Nate Keena, who started last, finished fifth.
FREDERICK WALKS AWAY WITH FEATURE WIN
Pole sitter Matt Brendel led from the pole in the WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Brendel felt the pressure from behind from defending track champion, Zach Frederick, and they briefly raced for the lead until Frederick drove by on lap four. Frederick drove away from the field as the battle for second was heating up between Brendel, Matt Dosch, Jeremy Keller and Jonny Carter. The race was super racy which allowed the drivers to race low, middle and high. In the closing laps, Brendel, Keller and Carter raced three wide for second as Dosch lurked in fifth. Hugging the guardrail around the bottom of the track, Jeremy Keller made the last lap pass on Matt Brendel and Jonny Carter to finish second while Matt Dosch crossed the finish line in fifth. Zach Frederick led the final 16 laps to win his first feature victory of the season by almost 2.5 seconds.
BRIDESMAID NO MORE FOR BERRY AT DACOTAH SPEEDWAY
In the final feature of the night, Jordan Huettl led the field to the green flag in the IMCA Modified feature. As Travis Ulmer and Myles Tomlinson raced for second, it allowed Jeremy Keller and Spencer Wilson to catch and pass them. Keller quickly reeled in the leader and took the lead before a lap 11 caution. On the restart, Wilson slipped by Huettl, bringing Marlyn Seidler with him. Seidler looked under Wilson and grabbed second before yet another caution regrouped the field. When the race resumed, Tom Berry passed Wilson and quickly passed Seidler for second with six laps to go. As Keller started catching lapped traffic, Berry quickly chased down the leader. Using the slower traffic to his advantage, Berry motored by Keller with five laps to go. After finishing runner up twice the week before, Tom Berry led the final five laps to win his first feature victory at Dacotah Speedway of the season. Jeremy Keller had to settle for second while Marlyn Seidler held off Spencer Wilson. Mark Dahl rounded out the top five.
