Reynoldsville- After three consecutive weeks without racing, it was finally time to get back to the track for the third night of racing Saturday night at Hummingbird Speedway. It was a special night at the track as we honored our late friend Tommy Scott with the running of the 2nd Annual Gateway Special Memorial. Tom was a long-time friend and supporter of the Speedway, as well as a former driver, car owner, and mentor to many local drivers throughout the years. As a part of the 2nd Annual Gateway Special, the Homak Penn-Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series made their first-ever visit to the track running a 25-lap, $1,200+/win race. Also, our Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi Late Model division ran a 25-lap, $1,000+/win race. Those two specials were run alongside our other three regular divisions. Feature winners on the night included: David Scott in the BWP Bats Super Late Models, Tim Bish in the Homak Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks, Nathan Smith in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi Late Models, Tim Steis in the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks, and Blake Joiner in the Lockwood Processing Four-Cylinders. Joiner’s win was his first career win.
The BWP Bats Super Late Models kicked off the feature racing action with Scott Alvetro and David Scott leading the field to the green flag for their 25-lap feature race. David Scott jumped out to the lead on the initial start with Larry Hollenbaugh and Scott Alvetro following behind. Later on the opening lap, Wyatt Scott looked to the inside of Alvetro and took the third spot. A caution for a spin in turns 3 and 4 on lap 2 setup the first restart of the race. On the restart, Wyatt Scott passed Hollenbaugh to move into second behind his Dad. On lap 4, Mike Wonderling worked his way around Hollenbaugh to move into third behind the leaders. Wyatt raced side-by-side with David for a handful of laps before David began to pull away. David Scott continued to lead as the race reached its halfway mark. On lap 13, a caution for a couple of spins in turn 4 setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, David Scott jumped out to the lead once again over Wyatt Scott and Wonderling. The race stayed green until another caution came out on lap 16 setting up one final restart. On the final restart, David Scott jumped out to the lead as Wyatt Scott felt the pressure from Wonderling for the second position. Wyatt held on to the second spot and began to distance himself from Wonderling. David Scott went unchallenged in the remaining nine laps enroute to picking up the win in his first trip to the Bird in 2020. Scott was followed by: 2) Wyatt Scott 3) Mike Wonderling 4) Kyle Scott 5) Jeremy Ohl 6) Kenny Schaffer 7) Paul Kot 8) Garrett Mott 9) Rod Phillips 10) Orvis Newcome lll 11) Larry Hollenbaugh 12) Brandon Groters 13) Doug Eck 14) Scott Alvetro. DNS: Steven Scaife. Hollenbaugh and Wyatt Scott won the heat races.
Rusty Martz and Jim Bloom led a full-field of Homak Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks trackside for their 25-lap, $1,200+/win feature event. Martz jumped on the opening start of the race which then put Andrew Gordon on the front row alongside Bloom for the restart. After another caution flag, the race saw its first green flag run. On the restart, it was Gordon that jumped out to the lead with Bloom and Chris McGuire in second and third respectively. A caution for a wreck in turns 3 and 4 on lap 2 setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, Gordon jumped out to the advantage over Bloom and McGuire. On lap 4, both McGuire and Curtis Bish worked their way around Bloom to move into second and third behind Gordon. The following lap, Bish worked his way around McGuire to take the second position. Zack Gustafson got past McGuire on lap 6 to take the third spot behind Gordon and Bish. The race stayed green until about lap 11 when another caution flag came out setting up yet another restart. On the following restart, Bish used the high side to his advantage to work past Gordon for the lead as the 12th lap was completed. Gordon went wide in turns 3 and 4 on lap 12 which allowed Gustafson to take the second position behind Bish. Bish led the way as the race reached its halfway point. The race remained green until a caution for a spin in turn 2 on lap 15 setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, mechanical issues with Bish and Gustafson brought out the caution once again and moved Gordon back into the lead with Brandon Connor second and Tim Bish third. On the following restart, Gordon jumped out to the lead as Tim Bish worked past Connor to take the second spot. On lap 17, Joshua Seippel went to the inside of Connor and took the third position. Then, on lap 18, Bish went to the low side of Gordon for the lead and completed the pass with just 7 laps to go. A caution for a spin in turns 1 and 2 setup one final restart with just 5 laps to go. On the final restart of the race, Bish pulled out to the lead and went unchallenged in the last 5 laps on his way to pulling off a remarkable 21st to 1st victory and picking up the $1,200+ payday. Bish was followed by: 2) Andrew Gordon 3) Joshua Seippel 4) Brandon Connor 5) Jackson Humanic 6) Jamie Barber 7) Jason Fosnaught 8) Jason Covey 9) Fuzzy Fields 10) Chris McGuire 11) Matt Sampson 12) Curtis Bish 13) Chris Withers 14) Curtis Bish Jr. 15) Jamie Colwell 16) Trevor McCann 17) Jim Bloom 18) Zack Gustafson 19) Rusty Martz 20) Bruce Hartzfeld 21) Dustin Challingsworth 22) Todd Weldon 23) Jeff Broniszewski 24) Shaun Hooks. DNQ: Terry Wheeler, Chris Transeau, Cameron Nastasi, Pernell Beimel, Cory Wolfe, Gary Fisher, Jesse Brock, Cregen Brady, Jamie Duncan, Corey McPherson, Matt Bernard, Leigh Wheeler, and Bobby Whitling. McGuire, Curtis Bish, Gordon, and Curtis Bish Jr. won the heat races.
The Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi Late Models were next to the track for their 25-lap, $1,000+/win feature race. Gabe Shaffer and Jim Challingsworth led the field to the opening green flag. Shaffer jumped on the opening start which moved Nick Loffredo to the front row to start alongside Challingsworth. Loffredo jumped out to the lead on the restart with Shaffer and Challingsworth following behind. One lap was completed before a caution for a spin in turns 3 and 4 setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, newcomer Nathan Smith used the high line to his advantage to power past Challingsworth for the third position behind Loffredo and Shaffer. One more lap was completed before another caution flag came out for a wreck in turns 1 and 2. On the lap 3 restart, Smith got passed both Loffredo and Shaffer to move into the race lead. Another lap or two were completed before another cation flag for a spin setup yet another restart. On the following restart, Shaffer got passed Loffredo to move into second behind Smith. On lap 6, Nick Erskine worked past Loffredo to move into third. Two laps later, on lap 8, Shaffer used the low side to his advantage to work past Smith and take the lead. Smith then looked to the inside of Shaffer and completed the pass to re-take the lead on lap 9. Erskine worked his way by Shaffer as well on lap 10 to move into the second position. Smith was pressured quite a bit by Erskine for the top spot as the race crossed its halfway mark. Erskine worked the inside of Smith for several laps before finally completing the pass on lap 16. Erskine began to extend his lead as the laps continued to tick away. But, with just 2 or 3 laps to go, he encountered some lap traffic which held him up and allowed Smith to close back in. Then, on the final lap, Smith went three-wide with Erskine and a lapped car and used the high side in turns 3 and 4 to get enough momentum to get past Erskine and capture the checkered flag and a $1,000+ payday in a dramatic last lap turn of events. Smith was followed by: 2) Nick Erskine 3) Gabe Shaffer 4) Nick Loffredo 5) Eddie Connor 6) Bob McMillen 7) Joe Loffredo 8) Cheyenne Reed Jr. 9) Jim Challingsworth 10) Austin Getch 11) Raven Fuller. DNS: Doug Surra and Levi Ardery. Surra and Erskine won the heat races.
Dennis Harrison Jr. and Shawn Hadden led the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks trackside for their 15-lap feature event. Harrison Jr. jumped out to the lead on the initial start with Andy Frey in second and Hadden in third. A caution for a wreck in turns 3 and 4 on the opening lap setup the first restart of the race. On the restart, Hadden worked past Frey to move into the second position on lap 2. Harrison Jr. continued to lead until another caution came out on lap 3 and setup another restart. On the ensuing restart, Harrison Jr. jumped out to the lead once again with Hadden and Frey following behind. The race stayed green until lap 6 when a wreck in turn 4 brought out the caution flag once again. A number of caution flags plagued the middle stages of the race. One of them involved Hadden and mechanical woes on Harrison Jr.’s car forced him to retire from the race while he was leading. That moved Tim Steis into the lead with Andy Frey and Josh Fields in second and third respectively. Fields moved into the second position at one point with just a handful of laps remaining. He spun out with just a couple of laps to go which cost him a podium finish. That moved Frey back into second and Casey Wolfe into third with just a couple laps to go on the final restart. On the final restart of the race, Steis jumped out to the lead and never looked back on his way to picking up his first win of the 2020 season. Steis was followed by: 2) Andy Frey 3) Casey Wolfe 4) Tim Powell 5) Josh Fields 6) Shawn Hadden 7) Jenna Pfaff 8) Makinna Pearce 9) Wayne Garvey 10) Dennis Harrison Jr. 11) Ben Ecelberger 12) Justin Watt. DNS: Bryce Swauger, Matt Kennelly, and Joe Skinner. Steis and Fields won the heat races.
The Lockwood Processing Four-Cylinders capped off the night with their 12-lap feature race. Joe Anthony and Joe Beningo led the field of 22 Four-Cylinders to the opening green flag. A couple quick early caution flags kept the field close through the first couple laps with Anthony leading followed by Travis Timko and Charles Watroba. On the restart following the cautions, Dave Smail worked his way into second behind Anthony. On lap 3, Blake Joiner looked to the inside of Timko and passed him to take the third position behind the two leaders. On lap 4, the caution came out for the race leader Anthony who lost his right rear wheel in turns 1 and 2. That handed the lead to Smail with Joiner and Timko behind. On the ensuing restart, Smail jumped out to the lead over Joiner and Timko. On lap 7, Mark Wetzel Jr. worked his way past Timko to move into the third spot. A couple of laps later, Joiner worked past Smail to take the lead just before another caution flag came out setting up one final restart. On the final restart of the race, Joiner pulled out to the lead and never looked back the rest of the way enroute to capturing his first career checekered flag. Joiner was followed by: 2) Dave Smail 3) Mark Wetzel Jr. 4) Brooks Kaufman 5) Travis Timko 6) Todd Davis 7) Cody McNaughton 8) Ben Lehane 9) Bill Eckenrode 10) Joe Beningo 11) Ryan McCanna 12) Shawn Shah 13) Tanner Petrillo 14) Michael Phillipson 15) Justin Finland 16) Joe Anthony 17) Charles Watroba 18) Wayne Truitt 19) Jerry Walls 20) Cody Cassler 21) Brad Lemonovich 22) Mike Potter.
