7.21.12 URSS Sprints Results

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Brian Herbert was able to run where no other driver was. In the end, he ended up in a place where every driver wanted to be — victory lane.

Herbert bested the field Saturday night at Platte Valley Speedway in North Platte, Neb., to claim his 18th career United Rebel Sprint Series win. The victory tied him with Jason Martin for fourth on the all-time wins list.

The veteran driver from Dodge City was able to keep his car down low as every other driver skated off the bottom.

“It wasn’t a bad race,” Herbert said. “Those guys just couldn’t keep their race cars on the bottom at North Platte. I rolled around the bottom perfectly. I told my brother he needed to write down what he did for the way we were able to do that.”

Herbert started eighth but was near the front just a few laps in when Tom Belsky got upside down, bringing out a red flag.

“I was biding my time and not wanting to push the issue,” Herbert said. “They kept leaving the bottom open for us, and I thought if they were going to leave it, we were going to take it.”

The line propelled Herbert to the front for another URSS win.

“I’m not sure what we did to the race car, but it stuck on the bottom,” Herbert said.

Mike Saathoff finished second, followed by Tommy Williams. Mark Walinder finished fourth.

Heat race winners were Herbert and Saathoff.

Herbert won the Keizer Aluminum Racing Wheels Hard-Charger Award, going from eighth to first.
