Wheatland, Missouri (July 21, 2018) – Kris Jackson made a mid-race pass of Taylor Moore and went on to capture the Ozark Golf Cars USRA B-Mod 25-lap feature Saturday night, the headliner on the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series program at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Jackson slipped past Moore with an inside move to complete lap 12 in a race that went caution-free. Jackson, of Lebanon, Missouri, went on to win by 2.34 seconds over Moore for his third victory of the season at Lucas Oil Speedway and 15th feature win overall in 2018.
Other feature winners on Veterans and Military Appreciation Night Presented by Fox 5 KRBK were Johnny Fennewald (Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Models), Marc Carter (Big O Tires Street Stocks) and Evan Hubert (Pitts Homes USRA Modifieds).
Jackson’s biggest challenge after making the winning pass was working his way through lapped traffic. The USRA national points leader did so with expertise, continuing to compile a season to remember.
“I want to say thanks to all our veterans tonight,” Jackson said in victory lane. “This night’s about them. We’ve raced with quite a few of them and I can’t say enough about what they do for us.”
Jackson called his 2018 success “a team effort” while rattling off his list of sponsors.
“I’m pretty proud of what we’re doing right now,” Jackson said. “I feel we’re pretty fast. That was a good, clean race, Taylor and JC (Morton) and all those guys. I’m just glad to be here.”
Moore finished second for his seventh top-five finish of the season. Morton, the season points leader at Lucas Oil Speedway, was third with Robert Heydenreich fourth.
Jackson said he was excited to hear the news on Friday about the Lucas Oil B-Mod Clash of Champions I, paying $3,000 to win, Oct. 12-13 at Lucas Oil Speedway.
“This is kind of our little spot I feel like,” he said. “We can usually get a car around here. I’m excited about that one.”
Fennewald dominates ULMA feature: Johnny Fennewald of Appleton City dominated the Warsaw Auto Marine & RV ULMA Late Model feature, opening a big lead and then holding off challengers on two late restarts.
“We’ve just been struggling a little bit,” Fennewald said of his season. “We should have won a lot of races, but couldn’t seem to make it happen. This track, when it gets slick, is a lot of fun to race on.”
Fennewald had checked out on the field, opening a 3.5-second lead over Josh Poe, when a lap-16 caution wiped out the cushion. Fennewald took over the lead on lap three when pole-starting Phil Edmondson slipped in turn two.
Fennewald sprinted away from there and was working through lapped traffic and in command when two late cautions put mystery back into the outcome.
Jon Binning and Josh Poe collided going down the front stretch to bring out a yellow with three laps remaining. That left Tom Cordray, Aaron Marrant and Kaeden Cornell behind Fennewald for the final restart.
Fennewald was up to the task, going on to win his third feature of the season. Cordray finished second with season points leader Marrant third and Cornell in fourth.
Carter earns Street Stocks win: Marc Carter of Warrensburg outdueled Brian Schutt to win the Big O Tires Street Stocks feature and end David Hendrix’s six-race winning streak.
Carter passed Schutt on lap nine after the two had swapped the lead three times to that point. Carter held on from there to earn his first feature win of the season with Schutt in second and Toby Ott third.
“We had a real stacked field,” Carter said. “The track was slick and it was in good shape. It was really nice to pull this one out. I always love running down here.”
Hendrix, Ted Welschmeyer and James Flood got together on the front stretch to finish lap two, bringing out a caution. Hendrix’s car suffered front-end damage and he had to restart in 21st.
Hendrix rallied all the way to fourth, ensuring that he will maintain his points lead over Schutt.
Hubert wires field in USRA Mods: Evan Hubert controlled things from start to finish, winning the 20-lap Pitts Homes USRA Modified feature for his third win of the season.
Starting the outside of row one, Hubert got the jump going into turn one from inside front-row starter Chase Jones. He gradually pulled away from there, finishing about a straightaway’s margin in front of runner-up Lucas Gibbs.
“The hardest part of the deal, I was out front and I didn’t know where to go. Everywhere (on the track) was good,” Hubert said. “The car was great. We kind of threw the book at it before the race. It was kind of scary and I didn’t know if it was going to work or not, but it worked flawlessly.”
Jones narrowly beat seventh-starting Jeff Cutshaw in a tight battle for third.
