7.27.18 Lakeside Speedway Results
The Clyde Ellis Memorial took the spotlight Friday evening for Racing on the River’s Edge at Lakeside Speedway. There were 15 E-Mods, 16 USRA Stock Cars, and 24 USRA B-Mods participating in weekly championship racing along with 19 Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models.
In MLRA preliminary late model action, Will Vaught outdistanced Justin Zeitner and Jeremy Grady to capture the opening heat while Terry Phillips set himself up for the main event with the heat two win over Logan Martin and Chris Spieker. For the main event, the fans witnessed a thrilling finish as Phillips stalked Will Vaught and made an exciting last-lap pass to claim the victory, which is actually the eighth such time he has took the checkers at Lakeside in an MLRA event. Vaught was second with last year’s winner Logan Martin rounding out the podium. For complete MLRA details, visit the series online at www.mlraracing.com.
Preliminary events recap: E-Mod drivers participated in a pair of heat races to sort out the starting grid for the 15 cars on hand in the main event later in the evening. Billy Spilman led the way in heat one over Ben Stockton and Shawn Burns while Brayden Bennett advanced to the front to take the heat two win over Trevor Hand and Paul Lanfermann II.
The Smokin’ Hot Summer Series action continued with Sixteen USRA Stock Cars motored their way to the track for a pair of heat races next with Brett Heeter taking command of heat one ahead of Kavin Anderson and Gerald Wahwahsuck. For heat two, Sam Scott bested Tim Shields and Jaylen Wettengel for heat two. USRA B-Mods were 28 cars strong on the night and competed in four heat races. Andy Bryant beat B-Mod dominator Tim Powell to the line to take the first heat race with Don Marrs third. Blake Pierce was victorious in heat two ahead of Brian Murphy and Sam Schuler. Luke Nieman won the third head ahead of Chase Galvin and Austin Charles and the final prelim of the night went to Brad Smith over Jett Sorensen and Tyson Lanfermann.
Main events recap: Sixth-starting Billy Spilman, who is the current point’s leader had a strong night as he advanced through the field as the E-Mod laps wound down to collect his seventh feature win of the season and fourth in a row. Trevor Hand is showing some speed of late and he finished a strong second in the main event with Shawn Burns taking third. In one of the strongest runs of the night, Steven Makar moved from tenth on the grid to finish fourth while Eddie Ingram rounded out the top five.
It appeared Brett Heeter would capture another USRA Stock Car victory as he was well in command of the race until he was forced to retire early with mechanical troubles. This opened the door for the ‘Coach’ Kevin Anderson to take over the helm and ultimately capture his second feature in in a row and fifth on the season. Sam Scott is posting solid finishes in the ‘Smokin’ Hot Summer Series and that continued Friday as he finished second to Anderson with Tim Shields also posting another solid run to third. Jaylen Wettengel made his way to the top five at the finish with David Holcomb posting a top-five run after starting twelfth.
In USRA B-Mods, it was Belton, Missouri’s Brad Smith who won a classic showdown with former SURA B-Mods and USRA Iron Man Champion Andy Scott, of Ft. Scott, Kansas. The two ran class for the victory but it was Smith who prevailed on this night for his fourth win on the season. Bryant took the second position with Chase Galvan again having a solid run to garner third at the finish. Luke Nieman and Blake Pierce rounded out the top five.
